View 5 RepliesI pass this class i created a variable by reference and i want that reference to be assigned to m_Text so that when i change m_Text it changes the TextValue variable i passed. Example:
Dim test2 as String = "ok"
Dim test as New GeneTextBox(test2)
'then some one changes the text in the GeneTextBox and i want it to change the test2 string...
Public Class GeneTextBox
Inherits Windows.Forms.TextBox
Private m_Text As String
Public Sub New(ByRef TextValue As String)

I am working on a application that has quite a few functions involved and have been thinking of the following: If I have a function that has a few paramaters, is it more efficient to pass the objects to the function(Example 1) or reference the objects in the parent(Example 2)? Does it matter if the objects are large or not?
Example:
Class mainform
Public myGenericList As New List(Of String)
Public myDatarowArray() As DataRow
[Code].....
I need to pass a reference of a class instance to a new form; the newform obtains data from the user to be added to the class instance. How might I do this? Is there a way to pass it as a parameter via the ShowDialog call?
View 2 RepliesI'm having this problem with my code and cannot seem to get past it although it was working fine before. The error is "An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: Object reference not set to an instance of an object." The code is:

I am trying to get information to be pulled out of a database and show in text boxes on another form (frmviewsdets). The error occurs when it gets to the line frmviewsdets.txtsnumber.Text = rdr("StudentNumber") and even when a breakpoint is applied there it just moves on to the next and so on.
I have tried to show frmviewsdets before I pull the data out of the database beut I get the same message.
I am getting this error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" and I dont know where/how to fix it and it does not tell me where the error in the code occurs, just a pop-up windows saying the error. Here is the code on the "start up" Windows form..

I am trying to create a application scripting environment for my VB .Net application. I have a form type in the application called Project. What I want to do is dynamically compile (i.e Eval) VB .Net code on a Project form. This dynamic code always has a Main function. One of the arguments to Main is a reference to the calling Project form. Here is the Eval code:
Public Function Eval(ByVal vbCode As String, ByRef MyAssembly As System.Reflection.Assembly, ByRef ProjectForm As Project) As ArrayList
Dim Provider As VBCodeProvider = CodeDomProvider.CreateProvider("VisualBasic")
[code].....
WTF, here's my code...
Public Class Form1
Dim BIT01 As Integer = BIT_01.Text
Dim Value As Integer = TB_OutPut.Text
[code].....
My problem is when i try to call Application.Run() in a application without a form i get "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." when i run it outside VS. but if ran in debug or release mode it works just fine. i may just be forgetting to setup application right, but ive done it before in this same manor and it worked fine.
Sub main() 'this runs first.
AddHandler Application.ApplicationExit, AddressOf ExitEventHandler
dbg_f("handle added")

Commented out init_timer and init_ready, and now it causes the same error for the myName line. there seems to be something wrong with class Application. btw theres seems to be something wrong with the forum code formatting.
I am converting some VB6 code which passed an unknown form object to a class, which then used the passed form object to reference the calling form and direct the data from the class as follows:
The Called Class in the class clsGetRecord
Public Function Execute(ByRef FRMForm as form) as booleanFRMForm.List1.Additem(SomeData)....Execute = SomeBool End Function
The clsGetRecord is used by many different forms which receive data all have objects called List1 as: The Calling Form for the form
frmThisFormPrivate function() as booleanDim objRecord as new clsGetRecordbRet = objRecord.Execute(frmThisForm)
The passed form object which will receive dataEnd function. Is there any simple way to do this since the calling form object is unknown at design time?
I am writing this codes on classlibrary to make the changes of the text and I want to control the form as well. I have wrote the last if statement on the bottom of the code that if the form is on the right side, then set the form from righttoleft. I get an object reference which is not set to an instance of an object. Here is the list of the codes that I am writing to make changes of the text on each menu items and control the form. [Code]
View 5 RepliesI have my forum calling a sub from a .DLL/Class Library and I get the "Object reference not set to the instance of an object" but when I had the .DLL as its own form, I did not get this error.
Here is the related code on the Form that calls the DLL:
vb

Public Class Form1
Dim accConn As New OleDbConnection("Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;Data Source=C:UsersAjDesktopTaxCert_be.accdb")

The problem with the following code is that the object oWB is visible and initialized in Form2, but when I show SaveDialog1, the object gives a NullReferenceException. I already know, because I checked in the debugger, that oWB has a valid reference when I leave Form2 and also when I come back from Form2. So I am sure the problem is that the reference simply is not visible in SaveDialog1 for some reason. So please don't tell me that the initialization of oWB returned a Nothing reference because I know it did not.
I get a NullReferenceException on the following line:
Form2.oWB.Save()
I researched this for a whole day and came up with a Microsoft article that explains that it is necessary to run each form of a .NET COM application on its own thread. It gave some code to accomplish this. I incorporated this code into my program. But I still have the NullReferenceException.
Simplified version of Code with most processing deleted below:
Public Class Form2
'Define Microsoft Excel Objects
Dim oXL As Excel.Application

I am trying to migrate a vb 6.0 program to .NET as it was all coded and worked... i am running into this problem when I try to print... (Print = visible form) I found a tutorial that works when it is used as a standalone but seems to cause problems when trying to integrate the code into my vb 2005, .NET project.this is the start of the added code...

I have this bit of code
Private Sub SpellChkMenuItem_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles SpellChkMenuItem.Click
Dim activeRichTextBox = TryCast(Me.ActiveControl, RichTextBox)

When I am in the rtb and click on spell check button it tells me the error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." On this line
SpellChecker.Text = activeRichTextBox.Text
But it is suppose to be getting the focused rtb correct? So why is it not referenced
I am receiving this error: Reference to a non-shared member requires an object reference on the code I've

I get this error:Reference to a non-shared member requires an object reference.When i compile on the following code section:
Private Sub statusBarToolStripMenuItem_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs)
ToolStripMenuItem.Checked = Not ToolStripMenuItem.Checked
statusStrip1.Visible = ToolStripMenuItem.Checked
when I do something like this: Process.Start [URL] it says that error only on Form2 not Form1.

View 2 RepliesI am opening frmB (variable for FormB - the actual form) from frmA. From btn1 I open frmB like this:
frmB = New FormB()
frmB.Show()
From btn2 (frmB is already open) I bring frmB to the front from behind frmA:
FormB.Show()
FormB.BringToFront().
No problem so far. Now I need to pass an arg to frmB. This is where I am having the problem.
from btn1 (in frmA) I do this:
frmB = New FormB(myArg) '--pass myArg to constructor of FormB -- no problem here
frmB.Show()
then from btn2 -- this is where I have the problem
FormB.Show()
FormB.BringToFront()
I tried placing myArg in FormB.Show(myArg) but that did not fix the problem. What is the correct way to pass myArg to FormB (frmB) in this scenario? Do I need to share FormB or frmB? How do I do this? "frmB" is frmA level variable.
why i am getting an "reference to a non-shared member requires an object reference" error on format.Yesterday gets the previous days date and presents it in a yyyyMMdd format.vsettlementDates takes the "Yesterday value and requests data from it.
Dim Yesterday As String = format(Today.AddDays(-1), "yyyyMMdd")
Dim vSettlementDates As String = (Yesterday)
