How To Pass Form Object To Data Class For Update

Mar 11, 2009

I am converting some VB6 code which passed an unknown form object to a class, which then used the passed form object to reference the calling form and direct the data from the class as follows:
The Called Class in the class clsGetRecord
Public Function Execute(ByRef FRMForm as form) as booleanFRMForm.List1.Additem(SomeData)....Execute = SomeBool End Function
The clsGetRecord is used by many different forms which receive data all have objects called List1 as: The Calling Form for the form
frmThisFormPrivate function() as booleanDim objRecord as new clsGetRecordbRet = objRecord.Execute(frmThisForm)
The passed form object which will receive dataEnd function. Is there any simple way to do this since the calling form object is unknown at design time?

Update A Table In Dataset Without Using A Form Class Where The Data Could Be Bound?

Apr 12, 2011

I have written some functions that I have in a module. In one of the functions I would like to update a table that is in a dataset. I would like to do this with this function and not from a form class where the table could be bound. I need to call the function from various places in the application.

Class Library (dll) Single Instance To Pass Data Between Processes Or Exe's DESIRED BADLY

Oct 20, 2010

The "named pipe" seems rediculous to pass data between processes (exe's). Is it possible to run a single instance of a VB.NET Class Libary (dll) such that two programs can access the same memory resident dll, thereby passing data via functions and or subs?When I try to make the class library as single instance, the "Enable Application Framework" is greyed out, and thus the option to "Make Application Single Instance" is also greyed out.When I try to call the dll from two processes, I simply just create two instances, so storing data in a module doesn't work

Object Passed ByRef To Form, But Not Accessible Throughout Form Class

Feb 18, 2010

Hi

I've got a pretty general question about the best practice in passing an object reference to a Form in VB.NET. My form is a dialog and I've created an overload ShowDialog method, where I pass an Object into it ByRef.

The trouble is, I want to be able to refer to that Object throughout my dialog Class and not just in the ShowDialog method. For instance, some of my Events for controls on the form, need to reference that object.

I know I could create a local Private variable in the Class and assign it to the passed value, and then use that value. However I'm thinking this isn't very efficient because it would (I believe) create a new copy of the Object (which is a complex, large class in itself).

Get Code From Class To Update Form?

Feb 14, 2011

I know this is probably a common one, its also quite tricky to know how to get around it (I find anyway).I have a seperate thread, within that thread I have defined an object (of my own class).Obj.UpdateMyForm is called, but how do I get the code from my class to update the form?[code]I found this code online a while back, and it seems to work if I call the sub routine directly from another thread, however, calling it from one of my class sub routines doesn't seem to work.

Declaring A Object - Instance Of An Object To Be Created When A Form Loads Or Another Class Is Created

Oct 5, 2009

If you want a instance of an object to be created when a form loads or another class is created, you have two options:

Public class example

private IAmAObject As IAmAObject

public sub new()

[CODE]...

Or like this:

public class example

private IAmAObject as new IAmAObject

public sub new()

[CODE]...

I always use the first one. It's more type work but I think it's neater. How about you people and is there any real difference between the two?

VS 2008 - Passing A Object Data To A Class?

Oct 5, 2010

I've got a main form (Form1.vb) where I created some controls (with the Designer).I've created a class myTextBox, inheriting from TextBox, in myTextBox.vb.In the main form, I call procedures from myTextBox. The issue is, those procedures use values from the Form controls. So the class doesn't recognise them as initialised.What's the best solution for this?I think I could pass the object itself as a parameter but doing it on each call seems a bitredundant and it thickens the code.Is there any way to access the Form1 controls and objects directly from the myTextBox.vb class?

Pass Data To Form Created Through ContextMenuStrip

Jan 26, 2011

I have a form that holds dynamically created pictureboxes. I have a ContextMenuStrip that is opened when the user right-clicks an individual picturebox that allows them to change the Tag of that specific image. When they click the "Change Tag" item from the ContextMenuStrip, a new form is brought up allowing them to change the Tag in a Textbox.

My problem is, I can't figure out how to pass the specific picturebox's (that was right-clicked) Tag into the new form so that the user can edit it and set when they click the "set" button. (Named "Button1" below)

Here's what I have so far:

Private Sub ChangeURLToolStripMenuItem_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles ChangeURLToolStripMenuItem.Click
Dim myItem As ToolStripMenuItem = DirectCast(sender, ToolStripMenuItem)

Flattening An Object Hierarchy Using A Shim Class - Initializing Derived Object Properties From The Base Object?

Jul 10, 2010

I am somewhat new to object oriented programming and am attempting to flatten a Linq object hierarchy by using a shim class.how to initalize a derived class with property values from a base class?I have two objects, a base object with about 100 properties, and a derived object which inherits from the base object and adds a few additional properties beyond those of the base object. My simple constructor creates the derived object, but I am looking for a way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object.Right now I am using reflection to iterate over the properties individually and I suspect there may be a better way. The following example shows my shim class constructor for the derived class, and two properties:

newProperty1 - a new string property of the derived class

flattenedProperty2 - a new string property of the derived class, copied from a 2nd-level object of the base class

Code example:

Public Class derivedObj
Inherits baseObj
Private _newProperty1 As String[code].......

Is this the correct constructor approach to flatten the object hierarchy using a shim class? My second question relates to initialization of properties in the derived class. The constructor above creates the derived object, but what is the best way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object? The following code uses reflection to iterate over the properties individually, but I suspect there may be a better way.

Code example:

' property names are in the string array fieldNames

'baseObjQuery is an ienumerable of baseObj

'derivedObjList is a list of derivedObj[code].....

Is there a simple way to initialize values for the properties in the derived object based upon the values of the common properties in the base object?

Private Sub Form1_Load

After saving, I get the correct message ("Saved"), and the DataGridView in the first form gets updated in real time.

But... when I take look at the data (or close and reopen the forms) the data in the database (SQL server) have not changed! What happens!
