Pass Values Back And Forth Appdomains?
Aug 9, 2009
I have the following [code]...
I thought make this would make my ada.myString have "working!" on the main appdomain, but it doesn't. I thought that by inhering from MarshalByRefObject any changes made on the 2nd appdomain would reflect also in the original one(I thought this would be just a proxy to the real object on the main appdomain!)?

Just started VB programming this week and have found a wealth of information about what I'm trying to do. Problem is, some of it is more complete than others.Here's what I'm trying to do:In Form1 (my main form), I want to instantiate a class that contains a couple of properties (speed setpoint and position setpoint). When I click a button, I want to pass this data to Form2 and populate two textboxes on Form2 with the properties of this object. I want to manipulate the property values on Form2 and click an OK button which closes the dialog and returns the manipulated data, updating the property values of the object. Here's the algorithm I'm following:1) On Form1, instantiate the class2) On Form1's "Pass Data" button click event handler, instantiate a Form2 object and invoke the ShowDialog method, passing the object as a parameter.
3) On Form2, overload the ShowDialog method to accept the object as a parameter and modify the method so that it returns the manipulated class data.4) On Form2, in the ShowDialog method, populate the textboxes with the class data that was passed in.Here's where I get stuck. If I press the OK button on Form2 (DialogResult.OK), it returns me to Form1, but what hook do I have in Form1 to receive the manipulated class data that the ShowDialog method is returning?Here's an example of what I'm thinking about:
Code:
Public Class Form1
Dim clsController1 As New MotionController
[code].....
I'm sure it's probably a very elementary question, but every explanation I've found seems to be incomplete.

I have a search page with a couple of pulldowns. Dependig on the values of them I show a grid matching the searched criteria, basically a table with links the user can navigate to. My problem comes when the user wants to navigate back. At the moment I have a "Back" button which simply redirects the user to the initial search page. I think it would be a good improvement to have the values of the pulldowns filled in with the values the user selected, this way when he presses the "Back" button he would not have to restart the whole search process again.

Currently this code runs without exception, but desc shows 40 spaces when displayed to the messagebox. I've tried StringBuilders, but they don't seem to work. I've also tried changing the 2nd parameter to be ByRef but this causes a read/write memory exception.

I have an MVC application where all the data is tied together by VisitDate table in my database. The home page is a strongly typed view of type VisitDate, all it does is pull up some simple data. Now, here's where I'm having a problem. I need a link that passes the current model in the view back to a separate controller action so I can render a different page with different data. Here are my two controller actions. I'm going from News.aspx to FrontPage.aspx and hopefully passing SchoolVisit. [Code]

I am in the process of prototyping a small sockets application, which monitors IT infrastructure (due to in-house financial and deployment restrictions, I am unable to utilise an existing commercial or open-source solution). Basically, I have a server application and associated agent process for communicating heart-beat data to the server. The server application implements a TCP socket class (TCPDevice), which is called from a WinForm. I am aware of the restriction on updating the UI from processes running on separate threads, and that the preferred technique for acheiving this is via the use of Delegates in conjunction with the Invoke method. Having had very little need previously for using Delegates (apart from of course std windows events and the BackGroundWorker control), I am at a loss as to how to do this in the context of my application, and would appreciate some assistance, although it has occurred to me that I could use the backgroundworker for marshalling updates to the UI.
Eventually the application will need to update a grid of devices via feeds from the defined agents, however for the purpose of this exercise simply updating a status bar on the UI will suffice. The section of the code which I believe is relevant to propogating the code to the form is contained in the OnDataReceived method.Below is a code excerpt from the protoype app which should put the above into appropriate context:
Code from the form:

I have a popup aspx page that receives data from a parent page gridview Edit click. There is a great deal of parsing of data from parent page to pop up as the data is being translated in pop up, then sent back to parent page to be reassembled in the original text block before update.
When the popup passes the data back or is canceled, the parent page gridview is still in Edit mode.I would like to pass the Cancel or Update button click from the popup to the parent page gridview so it can complete the update or cancel event without asking the user to click the corresponding command button link from the gridview edit mode, to Update or Cancel.
UPDATE: There is also a jquery UIBlocker on the Parent page to prevent the user from returning to the page until the PopUp page processing has been completed. Below is the critical code:
PARENT Page:
function parentFunc(a) {
// Unblocks on return from popup page.
$.unblockUI({});
[code]...
Had a problem with preventing the popup from reloading. So there is an if condition in the load event. A dynamic number of controls are built on the popup as literals. So the Page Init event and Page Load event fire on non Postback to rebuild the controls.

I know that if you declare a function as a data type you can return a value, but my question is, is there a way to get back other values from a function without declaring it as an arraylist? For example, if you made a GetValues function, is there a way to get a value by using something like GetValues.A or GetValuesB?

Can anyone give me the best method of passing back a value from a Thread?I have some procedures that I have set up as threads that I'm starting at the same time.My main function then waits until the threads are done and I'm needing to get back some values that the threads have created.Is there a better way to get these values back rather than just having them set a global variable with the returned value? Also, what is the proper way to wait for a thread to to be completed?I've just got a loop waiting for the Thread. Thread State property to not be in the Running state.So if there is a more proper way to wait for the thread to end I would be interested in knowing it.

I have a "result" which is DataTable and I like to get the x distinct values(City) and convert it back to DataTable how do I do this the code below gives me an error
Dim query = (From x In results.AsEnumerable()
Select (x.Field(Of String)("City"))).Distinct().CopyToDataTable()
so what I want is records of distinct cities I can get that but the problem I am having is converting it back to Datable.
Edited:I am using "where" in this statement and it does convert to Table(works fine) but not on "select"
Dim results = (From myRow In ds.Tables(1).AsEnumerable()
Where (myRow.Field(Of String)("xxxx") = xxxx)
Select myRow).Distinct().CopyToDataTable()

I am in the process of creating a program that needs to pass some information to another program. The program that needs to receive the data is meant as an update program to the first. I send a new copy of the host program over the sockets connection, then I need to pass the file name and location to the update program. After this information is sent the host program will quit so that the update can overwrite the host with the new version. The the update program restarts the host and everything goes on like normal. I have everything all-ready in place, except for passing the file information. I could just save the information in a text file and read form this, but it seems messy and illogical.

I have an infratistics grid that when I click on a row, the activerow gets set, then I click a button that will open a terminal form and ssh to an IP address in one of the activerow cells. It's not a problem until I connect to another row afterwards and it resets the activerow causing both forms to refer back to the latest activerow which would only be correct for the latest form opened. The problem then is that the terminal form refers back to the activerow cells for various updates. From my main form where the grid is, I open a new frmWodTelnet form to connect to the IP like this: [Code]
I haven't actually tried this yet, can't until next week just trying to get a grasp on how best to proceed. Does this look like it might work out for what I need, to lock the form values back to the original row until the form is closed? Or is there a better option I should be looking at.

I have been updating a program that was made in VB5. It contains several lines of code that are drawing lines and arcs, for example:
Arc(picCameraImage.hdc, sngOldX - sngCircRadius, sngOldY - sngCircRadius, sngOldX + sngCircRadius, sngOldY + sngCircRadius, sngOldX, sngOldY, sngOldX, sngOldY)
I have figured out, or think to have figured out, that the new way of doing arcs and lines does not require the HDC, so that problem is solved. The problem I am having now is that with the new way, every example I have found created a sub that does the drawings, like:
Public Sub PictureBox1_Paint(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.PaintEventArgs) Handles PictureBox1.Paint
Dim radius As Integer = 20
Dim diameter As Integer = radius * 2
[code]....
Is there anyway to pass values to this sub? I have to draw several arcs and lines and the values for them are different everytime. I would like to create a sub that would be used in every spot the old program used the old arc command and pass the needed values through it.

How can I do this:
Dim oMyObject As New MyObject
oMyObject.DoSomething("Parameter1","Parameter2")
The "DoSomething" and the two parameters are dynamically provided from another script. They are stored in a string object in this script: sAction & sParameters. My question is how can I dynamically pass the "sAction" to the object oMyObject.For example oMyObject.sAction (where sAction should be the value stored in the sAction string). The example will probably not work. Is there a way to do this? The idea behind is to avoid having to write each function hardcoded, like:
If sAction = "DoSomething" then
oMyObject.DoSomething(sParameters)
ElseIf sAction = "AnotherThing" then
