I have a project now where I will have a large chunk of CSV text, like 60 lines or more, and need to pass that from the client to the server. I know it would be weird with GET, but how would I store the multiline text so that I could later split it up, etc at my application?
View 2 RepliesI have a search page with a couple of pulldowns. Dependig on the values of them I show a grid matching the searched criteria, basically a table with links the user can navigate to. My problem comes when the user wants to navigate back. At the moment I have a "Back" button which simply redirects the user to the initial search page. I think it would be a good improvement to have the values of the pulldowns filled in with the values the user selected, this way when he presses the "Back" button he would not have to restart the whole search process again.
View 5 RepliesI've got a collection of a type of form and multiple of these can be displayed on the screen independently at the same time and now I'm wanting to add the ability to cascade these forms, but these forms can all be re-sized so it'll be very rare when they are of the same or similar size. I would like to be able to cascade them based on their present size, so the largest for is in the back and the smallest is in front.
I also realize that a form could be wider than than another form but that other form is taller than the current one, in which case I would like the taller form to be considered the larger one (an arbitrary decision, I know). Here's the code I currently have that cascades them in the order they are in the collection, I just need to know how to re-order them based on their size.

I have a CheckingAccountForm and a CheckingAccount class. I have 2 variables AmountEntered and TotalAmount. The user enters an Amount and hits the calculate button. So now I send the AmountEntered to the CheckingAccount class where it is added to the TotalAmount and I have to send the TotalAmount back to the CheckingAccountForm so it can be displayed in a textbox. Can someone give me an example on how to do that? I get the AmountEntered to the CheckingAccount Class and managed to calculate, but not sure how to get the TotalAmount back so I can display it in the GUI's TextBox for the TotalAmount.

Also, what is the proper way to wait for a thread to to be completed?I've just got a loop waiting for the Thread. Thread State property to not be in the Running state.So if there is a more proper way to wait for the thread to end I would be interested in knowing it.

View 2 RepliesI have a client/server application set up that the client sends a word file to the server and then the server converts that word file to a .TIF and sends the image back.The stuff I have now works.Say if I sent the size of the file and the actual file byte() to the server back to back, would the NetworkStream contain both back to back? This what I though would happen. So I implemented a kind of 'turn' based interaction during the duration of the conversion process.

I have created an application that I am using the VB webrowser control. The users needs to login to a site to display a particular webpage. The sites login is in a popup and what appears to be happening is the popup is launching outside my application (has IE in the title). If I enter uers/pass and try to login the information is not being passed back to my webrowser form.

I am developing a vb.net desktop application that reads mails from the mailserver using pop and imap. The application is almost fnished .The problem is the some time when a command is send to retrieve a mail using GetMessage() functions the applications is going to a halt. So I tried to run the the code in debug mode and ran line by line.
What I noticed is in the while loop in GetMessage() function is

The reader reads line by line at certain point of time it got hangs. Some times it ill catch an exception and give an error. I am pasting the exception below:
"Received an unexpected EOF or 0 bytes from the transport stream".
But some times the applications will hang and go for a halt. This applications has to run 24/7. So if it hangs in the night or it will be problem. What I want is if the reader is not able to read from the stream after certain time period. The control has to be removed from the reader and the function has to return a message. I am new to this the network level applications and I am running shot of time.

So, I have this code that grabs a bunch of data from the database, and performs a bunch of calculations on that data. However, this is not what is causing the halt. The halt is coming in when I take all that "final" data that has been prepared, and go to write that into a text file.
Each line in the text file is being created from data that has had calculations performed on it. Each line "corresponds" to a record from the database. A user will have to perform this file export usually on about 30-40 thousand records at a time. Now, even though I am using a StringBuilder, this still halts because of the pure mass amount of records.
What I do currently in the code is create one StringBuilder, append all the data (after calcs) to it, convert it to a String, add it to a List(Of String) to be returned from the Function, and then clear the StringBuilder, and do the same for the next row, and I do this until each row has been created and appended, converted, and then inserted into the List.
Then, another class receives this List(Of String) and takes each String and eventually appends it to a file.
Does anyone have an idea of how to improve this code and make it so it doesn't halt the server every time? The reason it wasn't found out until now is because when I tested it locally I was testing it on only 1-50 records at a time.

I'm fairly new to VB.NET, and I'm working on a text editor with a tabbed interface. I deal with large text files. Should I have each tab / text document open up in a new thread or a process? I basically want the entire application to always run fast as the text editor is just one part of it. If I have several large text files open I don't want the rest of the application slowing down a bit.

My project uses .NET remoting. The client connects to the server hosted in IIS to do database operations.
We have a class library that is referenced both by the client and the server. This contains basic static (shared) functions used throughout the project. An example would be a function that takes a customer/invoice number and pads it with zeros/spaces to our desired format. This works fine. There is a copy of the dll with the client and on the server in the IIS virtual directory. Both the server and the client can call these functions and they work correctly.
Now, in that same class library, I've defined two things: an enumeration (enum) and a serializable class. If I try to call a function on the server from the client that passes/returns an instance of either the enumeration or the class, I get the following
