I'm fairly new to VB.NET, and I'm working on a text editor with a tabbed interface. I deal with large text files. Should I have each tab / text document open up in a new thread or a process? I basically want the entire application to always run fast as the text editor is just one part of it. If I have several large text files open I don't want the rest of the application slowing down a bit.

I want to write a program to do Markov chain, but my states are quite large. First of all I calculate all the transition probabilities and revenues for all states(1381860 total states), and store in a multidimensional array. Public RevArr(0 To 9, 0 To 750, 0 To 282) As Long
After that the iteration of markov chain should use these as inputs to calculate the steady-state probabilities. But when I try to run the main code I got this error.Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown.
The following is the declaration of second array I add just another dimension for storing all the iterations, but I get this error. Dim stateprob(IT + 1, 0 To 9, 0 To 750, 0 To 282) As single

My problem is I have very large text files (approx 2GBs+).They have records in them based in one per line.Each line is not the same length and the data can be different lengths all the time.I am currently reading the file line by line, then splitting the data by common characters in the records. To process the full file it currently takes 3hours. This is way too slow for its purpose.

I've a problem reading text file using StreamReader. The file have between 500 000 and 1 000 000 lines.When I try to read it in a cycle, I get an error. That's why I've tried the StreamReader.ReadToEnd method. It worked fine. I've get the entire contents of the file in one string. So far everything is okay, but I've a small problem searching this huge string. I have to reformat the string to my desired format. I'll try to be more specific: The format of the input file is as follows:
50471100 8 2 6 5 0<LF><CR>
00000016 365442 12231<LF><CR>
00000026 112166 31133<LF><CR>
<end>

I have two large text files (about 1.8 GB each encoded in UTF-8). And I want to check if the content of both files are 100% same. If there is single character difference then it is considered not same, i.e. both files are different. How do I do that? So my question is: How to check if 2 large text files content are 100% same?

I'm working on a .Net Windows application. All the controls arrange fine, but when the user specifies their Windows display text to be larger than the Windows 7 default of 'Smaller', the controls get moved around on the form and makes it unusable.
Is there a way to lock down those controls no matter what the display text setting is at?

What I want to do is display large amounts of text and a few pictures, ideally with hyperlinks between the pages. A lot like wikipedia really, lots of similarly arranged pages, text in categories with in-line hyperlinks and the occasional picture to illustrate a point.But not online, integrated as part of a larger app.
How would it be best to go about doing that? The display method is sortof dictated by the storage method. My thoughts were:
Lots and lots of labels stored in an Access database
Straight HTML as if it were a webpage embedded in an iFrame or something
Labels populated from XML files?
Program the whole lot in Flash or something else (A language I can't speak)
This is only a mockup for demonstration purposes so the priority is user-friendlyness and ease of programming rather than storage concerns or good programming form.

I have a project now where I will have a large chunk of CSV text, like 60 lines or more, and need to pass that from the client to the server. I know it would be weird with GET, but how would I store the multiline text so that I could later split it up, etc at my application?

if I want to submit a large amount of text to my asp web page, do I need to worry about the text itself such as containing "&a=" that would mean another variable is being assigned for submitting data? Any way of not worrying about this? Or do I need to replace the & symbol everywhere in the test first if used?

The following code suppose to:
1. Read line-by-line a txt file with more than 500,000 lines, (each line 521 characters long)
2. extract an ID No from the line
3. query from a database for LCCIStatus
4. concatenate the value of LCCIStatus to the line
5. write the line to sample.txt
My problem is, this code works perfectly with the test file of 8000 lines but fail with the actual files which have over 500,000 lines. FYI, the test file contains data which I cut and paste from the actual file.

Basically this is my problem, showing the results of a string. I am making a program for a customer and he wants to be able to extract a string or set of emails from a large group of text. In this case he wants to be able to copy a webpage and extract all the emails out of the webpage. The problem i am having is showing the results of the List(of string) Function. So far, I can copy the page, paste the content to a textbox and then i have a function that is supposed to filter out the emails and paste or Show them in a list box.
I dont know why but no matter what I do I always get this error:
Error1Value of type 'System.Collections.Generic.List(Of String)' cannot be converted to 'String'.
This happens when I try to output the return results to a textbox or list box.
Here is the code for the whole program:
Entire Program Code:
Imports System.Text.RegularExpressions
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
[Code] .....
I have tried almost everything I could do, I am relatively new to string functions so that is my main problem.

Within our application, some of the object's text are effected by users with "Large font" turned on under Control Panel>>Graphic Properties. I can't determine what is the trigger to this behavior. I have many forms including TableLayoutPanels, ComponentOne Sizers, some objects with DOCK=Fill, and AUTOSIZE=TRUE. I wrote a simple Hello World form, and it is not impacted by the "large font" setting.

I'm busy with an applicaton which reads space delimited log files ranging from 5mb to 1gb+ in size, then stores this information to a MySQL database for later use when printing reports based upon the information contained in the files. The methods I've tried / found work but are very slow.
or is there a better way to handle very large text files?
I've tried using textfieldparser as follows:
Using parser As New TextFieldParser("C:logfiles estfile.txt")
parser.TextFieldType = FieldType.Delimited
parser.CommentTokens = New String() {"#"}

I am trying to parse a very large text file for certain strings. The text file is part of a level-making software for an old game I play. The text file basically contains all the information the level designer software needs, but the only important bit is the 'texture information'. Basically what I'm trying to create is a little program that parses the text files and shows the user a list of every texture in that text file. The problem is, the strings denoting textures are not really easy to find, and I can't think of any sensible and fast way to get them...

I need to constantly display large amounts of colored text in WPF or Silverlight, and I need the user to percieve it as showing up instantly.
Currently I'm doing this using a canvas and textblocks, one textblock per 80-character line, with multiple runs to a textblock to handle the different colors. There can often be 20+ runs to a line.
In a 45x80 grid of text, this gets a framerate of about 12 in Silverlight, which is sluggish. Oddly enough, it's even slower in WPF... I can only speculate that this has something to do with my dev machine's lousy video card. Maybe it's trying to hardware accelerate and actually slowing down because of it?

I would like to step through each *.txt file in a given directory, open it, find and replace all, perhaps a thousand, occurances of a given string (e.g. "00/00/00"), then close and save file, and step to next one in the directory to do the same find and replace. I've been looking at filestream classes and regular expressions but don't see a clear way to do this.

My app is a Bible Reader. At load up I can choose Genesis Ch1 and its entirety pops into a rtb. I enter a word to search for like 'God' and hit the SEARCH button. The results I get are initially what I want. I get the verse 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. But then the app replaces the script with other words containing God, but all jumbled up. Here is the code I am using: Private Sub ToolStripButton2Search_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles ToolStripButton2Search.Click Dim stSearch As String stSearch = Me.ToolStripButton2Search.Text For Each Line As String In File.ReadAllLines(Path.Combine(Application.StartupPath, "Bible VersionsKJV 1611King James Version of the Holy Bible.txt")) If Line.Contains(Me.ToolStripTextBox1.Text) Then Me.RichTextBoxViewer.Text = (Line) End If Next LineBryn Ryver

I have some large csv files (1.5gb each) where I need to replace specific values. The method I'm currently using is terribly slow and I'm fairly certain that there should be a way to speed this up but I'm just not experienced enough to know what I should be doing. This is my first post and I tried searching through to find something relevant but didn't come across anything.
My other thought would be to break the file into chunks so that I can read the entire thing into memory, do all of the replacements there and then output to a consolidated file. I tried this but the way I did it actually ended up seeming slower than my current method.
Sub Main()
Dim fName As String = "2009.csv"
Dim wrtFile As String = "2009.1.csv"
