Reading A Very Large Text File?

Jan 30, 2012

My problem is I have very large text files (approx 2GBs+).They have records in them based in one per line.Each line is not the same length and the data can be different lengths all the time.I am currently reading the file line by line, then splitting the data by common characters in the records. To process the full file it currently takes 3hours. This is way too slow for its purpose.

Reading Large Text File?

Jul 6, 2011

I've a problem reading text file using StreamReader. The file have between 500 000 and 1 000 000 lines.When I try to read it in a cycle, I get an error. That's why I've tried the StreamReader.ReadToEnd method. It worked fine. I've get the entire contents of the file in one string. So far everything is okay, but I've a small problem searching this huge string. I have to reformat the string to my desired format. I'll try to be more specific: The format of the input file is as follows:

50471100 8 2 6 5 0<LF><CR>
00000016 365442 12231<LF><CR>
00000026 112166 31133<LF><CR>

[2008] Reading A Very Large Text File

Feb 1, 2009

The following code suppose to:

1. Read line-by-line a txt file with more than 500,000 lines, (each line 521 characters long)

2. extract an ID No from the line

3. query from a database for LCCIStatus

4. concatenate the value of LCCIStatus to the line

5. write the line to sample.txt

My problem is, this code works perfectly with the test file of 8000 lines but fail with the actual files which have over 500,000 lines. FYI, the test file contains data which I cut and paste from the actual file.

Reading And Parsing Large Delimited Text Files?

Nov 23, 2011

I'm busy with an applicaton which reads space delimited log files ranging from 5mb to 1gb+ in size, then stores this information to a MySQL database for later use when printing reports based upon the information contained in the files. The methods I've tried / found work but are very slow.

or is there a better way to handle very large text files?

I've tried using textfieldparser as follows:

Using parser As New TextFieldParser("C:logfiles estfile.txt")
parser.TextFieldType = FieldType.Delimited
parser.CommentTokens = New String() {"#"}

File I/O And Registry :: Reading Files From A Large Directory?

Jul 15, 2009

I wrote a cleanup program to go through some directories and delete files based on if the creation date is older than say 6 months. It works fine with some of the directories I have that contain around a few thousand small files. However, there is one directory (that contains small backup files from another program) that is loaded with over 300,000 files and it locks up on me as soon as I read in the first file in that directory.I am convinced it is the directory has too many files in it to open it. The server that the directory is on is slow. It takes a half hour to open the directory while on the server itself. I know it will take forever to delete the amount of files I want to delete, but I don't understand why it gets stuck and hangs there with no error message.Here is where I get stuck. Listbox1 is the directory I'm attempting to access

For Each selectFile In My.Computer.FileSystem.GetFiles(ListBox1.Items.Item(Count), FileIO.SearchOption.SearchTopLevelOnly, "*.*")
compFile = Path.GetFileName(selectFile)

Odbc - Reading A Large File (>5MB) From A BLOB (container) Field From Filemaker?

May 4, 2011

I'm trying to read a binary file from a FileMaker 11 container field using Filemaker's own ODBC driver. I was able to write files to the database and this works fine. retrieving them manually works fine and the files look OK and are not corupted. However when retreiving them using VB.NET, and if the file size is approx > 5MB, I get the following "uncatchable" error (yes thats right, I cant "Try Catch End Try", it just crashes):

System.AccessViolationException was unhandled

[2008] Parse A Large Text File For Certain Strings

Feb 22, 2009

I am trying to parse a very large text file for certain strings. The text file is part of a level-making software for an old game I play. The text file basically contains all the information the level designer software needs, but the only important bit is the 'texture information'. Basically what I'm trying to create is a little program that parses the text files and shows the user a list of every texture in that text file. The problem is, the strings denoting textures are not really easy to find, and I can't think of any sensible and fast way to get them...

Open A Large Text File / Find And Replace A String

Nov 1, 2009

I would like to step through each *.txt file in a given directory, open it, find and replace all, perhaps a thousand, occurances of a given string (e.g. "00/00/00"), then close and save file, and step to next one in the directory to do the same find and replace. I've been looking at filestream classes and regular expressions but don't see a clear way to do this.

Searching A Large Text File And Returning A Searched Word?

Jul 12, 2011

My app is a Bible Reader. At load up I can choose Genesis Ch1 and its entirety pops into a rtb. I enter a word to search for like 'God' and hit the SEARCH button. The results I get are initially what I want. I get the verse 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. But then the app replaces the script with other words containing God, but all jumbled up. Here is the code I am using: Private Sub ToolStripButton2Search_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles ToolStripButton2Search.Click Dim stSearch As String stSearch = Me.ToolStripButton2Search.Text For Each Line As String In File.ReadAllLines(Path.Combine(Application.StartupPath, "Bible VersionsKJV 1611King James Version of the Holy Bible.txt")) If Line.Contains(Me.ToolStripTextBox1.Text) Then Me.RichTextBoxViewer.Text = (Line) End If Next LineBryn Ryver

Streamwriter - Replacing Specific Values In A Large Text File

Jun 4, 2011

I have some large csv files (1.5gb each) where I need to replace specific values. The method I'm currently using is terribly slow and I'm fairly certain that there should be a way to speed this up but I'm just not experienced enough to know what I should be doing. This is my first post and I tried searching through to find something relevant but didn't come across anything.

My other thought would be to break the file into chunks so that I can read the entire thing into memory, do all of the replacements there and then output to a consolidated file. I tried this but the way I did it actually ended up seeming slower than my current method.

Sub Main()
Dim fName As String = "2009.csv"
Dim wrtFile As String = "2009.1.csv"

TIP 1: Index Lines In Large Text File For Fast Random Access?

Jul 14, 2011

When you need to do random access to the lines of a text file, the regular solution is to put those lines in a list and access them in that list.But doing this if the text file is large creates a large memory overhead and may cause some memory stress on the application.This class maps the file and provide the ability to read any particular line in the file at a random position, without the need to read or put in memory any other line but the desired line. The only memory overhead involve is the 1024 bytes buffer of the base stream.Even if the file mapping can be a process that consume a noticable amount of time if the file is very large ( ~ 5 seconds for each 100,000,000 caracteres) , once the mapping is done the access to a particular line becomes instantaneous regardless of the size of the file. (The file mapping can always be done at a convenient time (ex when the process load) and can be done on a worker thread The class is base on a StreamReader to support the differents Text Encodings Example uf usage ( As I say, if the file is very large, dont do it like that, but declare the class at a convenient time)

Imports Reader = System.IO.MyStreams
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

Reading Large Files Efficiently

Sep 12, 2010

I am writing a small tool that identifies digital scielence in non compressed PCM WAV files. Its purpose will be to scan files approximately 1 hour long, containing mostly scilence and spltting the periods of non scilence into files and discarding any digital silence which is encoded as null bytes.I am wondering what the most efficient way of scanning the files is. I am able to derive the number of bytes for each second from the file header (in my case 16000) so am considering reading into a buffer of this size then scanning byte for byte, if I identify a non-null byte I will start siphoning the data off to another file.My issue is with scanning large expanses of digital silence which could be many megabytes of data which would require examining each byte to determine wether or not its digital silence. Surely there is a more efficient way of skipping them as I am not interested in them.

Reading A Specific Line From A Text File And Displaying It In Individual Text Boxes?

Feb 16, 2010

I've been writing a weight program for flooded pressure vessels and I'm having trouble retrieving the data from the text files I've been saving. I know how to write the data to the text file, but retrieving it with OpenFileDialog is not so easy for me.The user has individual text boxes that they input strings or numbers into and when they save the file, each text box input is written to one line in the text file. For example, the first text box is for the username, therefore the first line of text that is saved is the person's name, the second text box is the customer, thus the second line in the text file is the customer name, and so on.

(Actually, the first line of text in the saved file designates whether English units were used or Metric units because when the user retrieves the saved file, English units will open one form and Metric units will open a separate form, so some If...Then statement will need to occur).I need to be able to read the first line, have either my "EnglishForm"form open or my "MetricForm" form open, and then have each subsequent line of text be displayed in their corresponding text boxes. I know I need to use ReadLine or LineInput, but I don't have a clue what to do.Assuming the syntax I've displayed below would just magically work (if only life were that easy), it would look something like this

If FirstLineOfTextInFile = "English" Then
EnglishForm.Show()
ElseIf FirstLineOfTextInFile = "Metric" Then[code]....

And so on...I read a lot of articles from the MSDN library and exhausted each link that I've looked through from Google and Bing, but most only retrieve data from the file to a single text box through some loop or streamreader and don't take into account multiple forms.
