File I/O And Registry :: VB 2010 Formatting Data In Text File?

May 4, 2012

1 List all of the data from Teams.txt in a Listbox. Include suitable headings.

2 List all of the data from Results.txt in the Listbox (use the same Listbox as in 1 above).Include suitable headings. Note that you cannot assume that the file contains onlyresults for the first 3 weeks of the season. Your program should be able to process a results file with more or fewer results.

3 List all of the data from Results.txt in the Listbox. However, in this case the actual team names should be output (your program will need to get this data from Teams.txt. The data should be formatted so that it is aligned correctly. Include suitable headings.

The output might look as follows:

Reading A Very Large Text File?

Jan 30, 2012

My problem is I have very large text files (approx 2GBs+).They have records in them based in one per line. Each line is not the same length and the data can be different lengths all the time.I am currently reading the file line by line, then splitting the data by common characters in the records. To process the full file it currently takes 3hours. This is way too slow for its purpose.

Reading Large Text File?

Jul 6, 2011

I've a problem reading text file using StreamReader. The file have between 500 000 and 1 000 000 lines. When I try to read it in a cycle, I get an error. That's why I've tried the StreamReader.ReadToEnd method. It worked fine. I've get the entire contents of the file in one string. So far everything is okay, but I've a small problem searching this huge string. I have to reformat the string to my desired format. I'll try to be more specific: The format of the input file is as follows:

50471100 8 2 6 5 0<LF><CR>
00000016 365442 12231<LF><CR>
00000026 112166 31133<LF><CR>

[2008] Reading A Very Large Text File

Feb 1, 2009

The following code suppose to:

1. Read line-by-line a txt file with more than 500,000 lines, (each line 521 characters long)

2. extract an ID No from the line

3. query from a database for LCCIStatus

4. concatenate the value of LCCIStatus to the line

5. write the line to sample.txt

My problem is, this code works perfectly with the test file of 8000 lines but fail with the actual files which have over 500,000 lines. FYI, the test file contains data which I cut and paste from the actual file.

ASCII Text Formatting - TextBox To File?

Oct 22, 2010

So I'm using a plain TextBox to display output from an ongoing background process. I've created a 'report string' that displays in my textbox like it has 3 columns; there's a VariableName, a VariableValue, and a VariableEffect (showing how applying that variable to the process affected it).In my textbox, any VariableValue entry that has 17 or greater characters gets 1 tabstop between Value and Effect; any entry 16 or less gets 2 tabstops, and any value 7 or less gets 3 tabstops which very neatly lines up the 3 columns.

[2008] Parse A Large Text File For Certain Strings

Feb 22, 2009

I am trying to parse a very large text file for certain strings. The text file is part of a level-making software for an old game I play. The text file basically contains all the information the level designer software needs, but the only important bit is the 'texture information'. Basically what I'm trying to create is a little program that parses the text files and shows the user a list of every texture in that text file. The problem is, the strings denoting textures are not really easy to find, and I can't think of any sensible and fast way to get them...

Formatting Decimal Field For Text File Write Out

Mar 25, 2009

I have a VB Application that is loading an Array with Numbers from the Sequel Server that have numbers 315054 no cents and leaving the .00 off even numbers. I need to write out the number to a textfile that has 14 zero's to the left removing the decimal point from the number.

The Number should format and be written out like this:
00000031505400 in the text file.

My coding does this as long as the even number has a decimal point .00 but if the number comes in as 315054 into my array my coding gives an Argument error with the coding below.
SCreditTextBox1 = Microsoft.VisualBasic.Right("00000000000000" & Microsoft.VisualBasic.Left(_sData(Irow, 7), _sData(Irow, 7, ".") - 1) & _
Microsoft.VisualBasic.Right(_sData(Irow, 7), 2), 14)
Is there a way to check for no decimal point and then place the number with no .00 as 00000031505400?

The accounting people are entering the numbers into the server this way incorrectly. The .00 is suppose to be entered with it, but not all even numbers are entered this way without .00, just a few, but I need to check the number to see if there are decimals and without decimals do something. Could my coding be re-written to account for not having the .00 and to format the number correctly to avoid the argument error?

I need for any number to format with:
$3,000.00 would appear in server as 3000 or 3000.00 and should write out like this below: I need to check for decimals and without decimals and writeout the format like this below:
00000000300000.

Open A Large Text File / Find And Replace A String

Nov 1, 2009

I would like to step through each *.txt file in a given directory, open it, find and replace all, perhaps a thousand, occurances of a given string (e.g. "00/00/00"), then close and save file, and step to next one in the directory to do the same find and replace. I've been looking at filestream classes and regular expressions but don't see a clear way to do this.

Searching A Large Text File And Returning A Searched Word?

Jul 12, 2011

My app is a Bible Reader. At load up I can choose Genesis Ch1 and its entirety pops into a rtb. I enter a word to search for like 'God' and hit the SEARCH button. The results I get are initially what I want. I get the verse 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. But then the app replaces the script with other words containing God, but all jumbled up. Here is the code I am using: Private Sub ToolStripButton2Search_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles ToolStripButton2Search.Click Dim stSearch As String stSearch = Me.ToolStripButton2Search.Text For Each Line As String In File.ReadAllLines(Path.Combine(Application.StartupPath, "Bible VersionsKJV 1611King James Version of the Holy Bible.txt")) If Line.Contains(Me.ToolStripTextBox1.Text) Then Me.RichTextBoxViewer.Text = (Line) End If Next LineBryn Ryver

Streamwriter - Replacing Specific Values In A Large Text File

Jun 4, 2011

I have some large csv files (1.5gb each) where I need to replace specific values. The method I'm currently using is terribly slow and I'm fairly certain that there should be a way to speed this up but I'm just not experienced enough to know what I should be doing. This is my first post and I tried searching through to find something relevant but didn't come across anything.

My other thought would be to break the file into chunks so that I can read the entire thing into memory, do all of the replacements there and then output to a consolidated file. I tried this but the way I did it actually ended up seeming slower than my current method.

Sub Main()
Dim fName As String = "2009.csv"
Dim wrtFile As String = "2009.1.csv"

TIP 1: Index Lines In Large Text File For Fast Random Access?

Jul 14, 2011

When you need to do random access to the lines of a text file, the regular solution is to put those lines in a list and access them in that list. But doing this if the text file is large creates a large memory overhead and may cause some memory stress on the application. This class maps the file and provide the ability to read any particular line in the file at a random position, without the need to read or put in memory any other line but the desired line. The only memory overhead involve is the 1024 bytes buffer of the base stream.Even if the file mapping can be a process that consume a noticable amount of time if the file is very large ( ~ 5 seconds for each 100,000,000 caracteres) , once the mapping is done the access to a particular line becomes instantaneous regardless of the size of the file. (The file mapping can always be done at a convenient time (ex when the process load) and can be done on a worker thread The class is base on a StreamReader to support the differents Text Encodings Example uf usage ( As I say, if the file is very large, dont do it like that, but declare the class at a convenient time)

Imports Reader = System.IO.MyStreams
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

Gathering Data From Several Different COM Ports And Reformat?

Apr 28, 2010

I have written a program that will gather data from several different COM ports and reformat the data before sending it to a web site. This program is intended to run 24/7, but only send the information at user specified intervals. I have the routines to gahter data, but I only need it to perform this task at the specified time (5 minutes to each hour). At startup the dialog minimizes to the system tray. I would like a balloon message notifiy anyone watching that the data is about to be sent, and allow them to add additional comments if they choose (by clicking on the balloon). The system tray icon has several context menu items that the user may need. Is this the proper use of a background thread? I would also like opinions on the best method for pausing execution until the specified time.

Way Of Re-ordering Handles Without Having To Completely Reformat Form

Jan 31, 2011

finally my programme works. It will test the other programme, which is a Bid Tabulation programme allowing up to 10 Supplier Quotes each one having up to 500 line items; handling mixed currencies; many additional lines of specific information; etc.; using any combination of Suppliers and Line Items. However, I thought that I would let you know about some of the things I had to do to make it run.Obviously, the programme can bring up the Bid Tabulation programme very quickly, and then moves on to obtain the handle of the first form. But I had to insert a timing delay in order for the programme to report that it had found the handle; I also had to add the same delay all over the programme in order to see a valid handle number instead of "0".In addition to this I had to cycle through the ChildHandles, as you had indicated in order to get to the handle I needed. This raised another problem. I wanted to enter information in the same sequence as the tab order, but I found that the ChildHandle order was all over the place; generally back to front. In other words the tab order which went from top to bottom, and left to right, whereas the ChildHandle order was sometimes all over the place.

Is there a simple method of rearranging the ChildHandle order, as there is for arranging the tab order? I had to reformat several of my forms in order that entries would make sense. Imagine the table below is a form with 23 TextBoxes. The order that I need them to be filled is from top to bottom, and left to right, but the actual order of the TextBoxes is as below: [code] This message does not really require a resolution to a problem, unless there is a way of re-ordering the handles without having to completely reformat the form.

Text Editor - Loading Multiple Large Text Files

I basically want the entire application to always run fast as the text editor is just one part of it. If I have several large text files open I don't want the rest of the application slowing down a bit.

Parsing - Extract Characters From A Long String And Reformat The Output To CSV By Using Keywords With .net?

Nov 10, 2010

I have a task to resolve, it is regading extracting characters from a long string to the console, the extracted text shall be reformatted and saved into a CSV file. The string comes out of a database.

It looks something like: UNH+RAM6957+ORDERS:D:96A:UN:EGC103'BGM+38G::ZEW+REQEST6957+9'DTM+Z05:0:805'DTM+137:20100930154

The values are seperated by '.I can query the database and display the string on the console, but now I need to extract the Keyword 'ORDERS' for example, and lets say it's following 5 Characters. So the output should look like: ORDERS:D:96A then I need to extract the keyword 'BGM' and its following five characters so the output should look like: BGM+38G:After extracting all the keywords, the result should be comma seperated and look like:

ORDERS:D:96A,BGM+38G: it should be saved into a CSV file automatically.

I tried already:

'Lookup for containing KeyWords
Dim FoundPosition1 = p_EDI.Contains("ORDERS")
Console.WriteLine(FoundPosition1)

Which gives the starting position of the Keyword.I tried to trim the whole thing around the keyword "DTM". The EDI variable holds the entire string from the Database:

Dim FoundPosition2 = EDI
FoundPosition2 = Trim(Mid(EDI, InStr(EDI, "DTM")))
Console.WriteLine(FoundPosition2)
