Program Gets Slow Down Over Time
Nov 5, 2010
I have a program that after clicking start, starts looping. Most of the code is in the "start" button event, and the timer keeps calling it every second. Basically the program reads a line from the serial port, opens and reads a couple text files, opens and writes a couple text files, sends a string out the serial port, then repeats.
After about 24 hours of running, the computer and this program get very slow. Screen updates get really slow and clicking on buttons takes the program several seconds to respond. The actual loop itself slows too, I think, but not much. Restart the program and everything is happy again. What would be the best way to go about troubleshooting this? [Code]

I'm using Visual Studio 2010 Pro on a Windows 7 PC, to build simple VB Windows Form Applications (I've just started learning VB). Lately when I try to debug my applications, it takes unusually long. For example, an application with just a blank form and nothing else will take about a minute to build, and then it will sit for another minute or two until the app window pops up. It didn't use to do this!

Does anybody know why hitting web services the first time takes much longer? I am not sure if this is per user, or per the whole application, meaning that if one user is hitting a web service, will another user hitting the web site also have to wait a while? I am not sure what is happening to rev up the web service.

I have an application that consists of about 4 screens. Screens can be changed by clicking on buttons or via menu item. I use about 16 to 17 tables in all for all 4 screens. I've publised the application and it works fine except that it takes about 1 1/2 to 2 minutes to launch the application using the setup file that I save onto my PC. If I get lucky, a little over a minute is already fast for me. What can I do to help speed up the launch time?

We have a project for a client that is written in VB.NET. In one of the projects, we have about 100 modules, which are all VERY simple. They're extension methods that convert between object types. Here is a small snippet:
Public Module ScheduleExtensions

Public Function ToServicesData(ByVal source As Schedule) As ScheduleServicesData

I was board making web browsers and OS so, I tried making an Encryption/Decryption program. I surfed the net and found a source code. But, after doing everything, I debug it, click the encrypt btn and nothing happens. I though the encrypting is a slow process. The thing is the process should be immediate cause I downloaded this web browser called 'Areo Pack'. It comes with a few other program and one of them in an Encryption/Decryption program. I tried it and it was done in a few seconds. I tried opening the encrypted file with notepad and I see a text file with Chinese, Japaneses, Korean, etc.

Why does my program slow down when i add a Back Ground Image?

I think it's because I have a background image. For example when I maximize the program it lags. I mean big software companies have programs that have more pixel images and are much more colorful then my program is but never lag why. AVG has nice look but the program never lag. But the code runs fine so that is a good thing. How can I stop the lag with background image?

I am trying to create a program in Visual Basic which will measure the performance of the CPU with every core, one at a time. In this program, I decided to place a couple of text boxes that display the processor speed and the actual processor speed. I need to get the actual processor speed to update and I have tried doing this already using a timer set to tick every second. However, when I load the program it runs really slowly and prevents me form doing anything within the program, including trying to close it down, and all it does is updates the text box every second. I have looked in task manager to find out how much CPU the program is using and it shows that my program is using 0 - 3% CPU.
Here is the code currently use
Private Sub Timer3_Tick(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Timer3.Tick
Dim mSearcher As New ManagementObjectSearcher("SELECT * FROM Win32_Processor")

With a Time value in my program. Basically, I am importing a travel Time from a database e.g. 3:45 so it takes 3 hrs and 45 minutes to get from a to b. I then want to double this - 3:45 * 2 = 7:30, and then want to multiply it by a cost e.g. travel is charged at 25 per hour. so it would be total travel time = 7:30. Travel cost = 25. Total Travel Cost = 7:30 * 25. In the access db, it is stored as a text field, and then imported in vb as a string.

I have a program that allows a user to select a program to run at a certain time for a specific amount of time all choosen by the user. Everything works with the exception of if my program has launched the other program, my program become non-responsive. Meaning I am not able to look at that window again. Not that one really needs too, because when time is up my program closes the program it opened, then closes itself. I just want to be able to see my program when the other program is running. how to do this and perhaps drop me some links, that would be wonderful. This is what I have coded, but like I stated there are no code errors.

I am currently using vb 2008 and want it so when a user registers it will unlock all the extra features and stay that way even after the user quits and restarts the program... I already have everything set exept for the save feature. I don;t know exactly what to do. I just want to save the settings of my program so that they are the same every time somebody uses the program. I heard that you need to go into Project , then properties and then settings... But I don't understand what to do there...

What is the syntax that should be used in order to check if 08-Jan-2010 is before or after today.
I mean:If 08-Jan-2011 < today's date Then
msgbox("08-Jan-2010 is in the past")
Elseif 08-Jan-2010 > today's date
msgbox("08-jan-2010 is in the future")
Else
msgbox("08-jan-2010 is today's date")
This is exactly what I need to know

I am aware that if you wish to run a program at a specific time, the best way is to add it to the windows task scheduler. I have a forms application that accepts as input a text file and some button selections before the actual main runs.
Can this kind of program be scheduled? I realize I would have to hard code the inputs but does .net have any features to access the task scheduler?

how to start a VB.NET program at a specific time of the day, but I simply cannot find it. I've found an example that shuts down the computer at a specific time of the day, but having no experience with the Timer function, I wouldn't know where to start when hacking the code.As an example, I'd like the program to run at say 2:00PM and display a message. The displaying the message won't be hard (MessageBox.Show("Stuff")), it's just the starting .

Is there a way to code, so that if your program freezes over a period of time (5sec), it just stops trying to do it, and goto something else.
"On ERROR" wont work, since its not a error. "Try" doesnt work ether.
Its because I'm am programming something that can login to a router thought telnet, and sometimes the telnet ActiveX doesn't read the buffer or the line proberly, so when the .GetLine() func is called, it freezes. And i want away to goto another point if it keeps freezing for more than 5secounds. The telnet ActiveX that, I am using is Dimac w3sock.
