I'm trying to create a "quiz" program in VB. The questions to be asked are placed inside text files and have the following format:
[code]...
> VB thinks that im trying to open a file named, what im trying to do is open a txt file which have a file name similar to the value of integer.
labelQuestion.text = variable.Readline().
Im designing a program that will read from various text files (preferably RTF files) and then put them into the RTF box in the program when a button is clicked.
Here is the portion of my code that i am referring to.
Try
Dim fileText As String = My.Computer.FileSystem.ReadAllText("c:\" & selectedHero & ".rtf")
infoDisplay.AppendText(fileText)
infoDisplay.Rtf.Format()
Catch
MsgBox("Selected Hero currently has no File with us.")
End Try
Now heres the problem. In the file i have a few pictures and its formatted and what not. I thought since its a RTF file and the Box is RTF it would auto format.... but anyways. It appears like this in the RTF Box.
{\rtf1\ansi\ansicpg1252\deff0\deflang1033{\fonttbl{\f0\fswiss\fcharset0 Arial;}}
{\*\generator Msftedit 5.41.15.1507;}\viewkind4\uc1\pard\f0\fs20{\object\objemb{\*\objclass Paint.Picture}\objw3000\objh3000{\*\objdata

Ok so im not sure how i can read from a RTF file and put it in the RTF box with the right format....Ive been searching around for a while.
I have a VERY basic knowledge of VB. I'm having trouble figuring out how to read multiple xml files when a user selects them from a listbox. Below is what I have so far. Currently this will only read one xml file. When I change "Dim strDir As String = PlayListBox.SelectedItem" to "Dim strDir As String = PlayListBox.SelectedItems" the code doesn't work.[code]...

Here I get files in the following format.
Hotels_Sales_Graph_level_20080529
Hotels_Sales_Graph_level_20080530
Hotels_Sales_Graph_level_20080601

Now I need a script to pick all these files data and load it into one file so that I can use this file to insert data into a table using a fast load script i already have.I have a script that will read this file copy it to a new location and archive it.I can use this final file to load my table.But I dont have a script to read all these files and also read the new file that comes in everyday and load it into one csv file.
I need to require the user of this program to select two text files from any directory. I then need to display them in a List View, which I have built. File 1 needs to load into the first column and File 2 needs to load into the second. They will correspond to each other.[code]...

So far this is what I've come up with:
OpenFileDialog - to open the file
StreamReader - to read the text files and find the text that I specified
**Not sure on the replace method**
StreamWriter - to write the text from the textbox to the new file
SaveFileDialog - to save the file to the specified location

I am trying to read a text file into a combobox but for some reason it just wont load:
Dim path As String = "C:UsersLukeDocumentsWhispaServerFiles est.txt"
Dim StringArrayOfBuyers() As String = File.ReadAllLines(path)
Dim clientArray(StringArrayOfBuyers.Length - 1)() As String

So the code is loading the text file fine, it just wont display the first split in the Combobox

I'm fairly new to VB.NET, and I'm working on a text editor with a tabbed interface. I deal with large text files. Should I have each tab / text document open up in a new thread or a process? I basically want the entire application to always run fast as the text editor is just one part of it. If I have several large text files open I don't want the rest of the application slowing down a bit.
View 2 RepliesI need to write a small program to get a certain task done, but I have zero experience in manipulating text files. how to write the following program:The program should take all the text files in a folder, and add the data in a csv text file, with columns:

So I'm trying to make a combobox use a string that has other strings and has text too. [code]...
I'm trying to use numbers more than once so I want everything to be in there. I tried using:
Dim numbers As String = (one or two or three or "four" or "five")
but that didn't work either. Is there any way to make this possible
1. allow the user to specify a folder in which to find a specific text files,
2. to read a few specific numbers within each of those few text files, (eg. in txt file A, #A = '1', in txt file B, #B = '2', etc)
3. place those numbers into multiple comboboxes, (eg '1' into CB1, '2' into CB2, etc)
4. allow the user to change the number from the combobox drop down list, (eg CB1 change to '2', CB2 change to '1', etc)
5. Click to overwrite the old numbers in the text file with the new numbers and save the text files
My main problem is no. 2, how do I read a specific string in the text file and display it in the combobox?(Win XP, MS Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition with sp1)

View 1 RepliesI am making a recipe book that calculates the amounts of each ingredient needed for a dinner.The user inputs the number of people they are cooking for and then my program works out the amounts of ingredients needed, simply by * number of people.I know how to read from text files using commands such as: My.Computer.FileSystem.ReadAllText()But does anyone know how to take text for a text file, then multiply the contents of that file by the number of people?The text file only stores numbers, but I want to multiply each line seperately..Instead if getting the result of 10050*3, I want 100*3 and 50*3 on a seperate line.[code]For this to work, I suggest downloading the full project.You will also need to create a folder with two text files inside it. This will not work without them. "QuantityList.txt" and "IngredientList.txt".

I'm completely new to .NET and am trying as a first step to write a text processing program. The task is simple: I have a list of 10,000 text files stored in one folder, and I'm trying to read each one, store it as a string variable, then run it through a series of functions, then save the final output to another folder. So far I can only manage to manually input the file path like this (in VB.NET):
[Code]...
I'm wondering, therefore, if there's a way to automate this process. Perhaps for example store all input file path into a text file then read each entry at a time, then save the final output into the save path, again listed in a text file.
I am a new to visual basic 2010 and I am creating a small game program that will have players names and keep their scores in a text file. I placed the text file in debug folder for debugging purposes. The code below has been simplified for demonstrating purposes only.

Any simple/easy (emphasis on easy, I am a major beginner) to read through text files quickly, search for strings and pull information. I am currently using the 'StreamReader' function and 'InStr' command, but the files I am working with are gigantic and this is taking from 1/2 an hour to a few hours to work its way through.
Here is a sample of the code I am currently using - poke fun at will, I am a major newbie.
strContentsTime1_jntfor=0
Do Until strContentsTime1_jntfor Is Nothing
strContentsTime1_jntfor = objFile1.ReadLine()
'look for string 'time'
strFindStringTime_jntfor = "time"

I'm saving path's to text files in a text file so the user himself would be able to add new data. My problem is that I need to make a loop that reads from these different text files and stores the data (but I don't know how many there might be.) This was my try to it:[code]

Application using ado.net
When reading data from an excel file the driver tries to detect the data type of a column based on the contents of that column.
Once it's decided on the datatype then data that is not compatible with that datatype is simply ignored and returned as Null when you read that column using ado.net
For example if most of the column contains numbers then the occasional cell containing non-numeric data is returned as null.
Is there a way to force it to always return all data as text no matter what the actual column contains. ?
