Retrieving Connection String From AppConfig?
May 3, 2012
I am getting the error "Object reference not set to an instance of the object" Debugger is suggesting to use the "New" keyword to create an object instance, or to Check to determine if the object is null before calling the method. Error is occurring on line 27: "sReturn = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings(strConnection).ConnectionString" I;m not sure where to go from here.
First, my appconfig connstrings:
<connectionStrings>
<add name="con1"
connectionString="Data Source=VMXP/SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=Interview;Integrated

I'm creating a VB.NET 2010 application which is connected to an Access 2010 database. I've set up a connection using the inbuilt connection wizard. I want to pull data from the tables using ADO.NET objects such as the data adapter to create datasets. The data adapter in ADO needs the connection object. Can I pull this from app.config? Should I junk the inbuilt connection and create a new one with code alone? Help.Scott M Brush

I understand the possibilities for encrypting a connection string in .net v4. I have a win forms application that will be used by multiple people on different machines. I understand that I need to protect the connection string at time of the app being first run on the target machine. However I am concerned that for a period of time my connection string will be unencrypted. I am looking for advice in how to deploy my app with the connection string already encrypted or encrypted during installation. encrypting the connection string in a secure way?

I'm developing an app in vb.net (visual studio 2008). I have a Teradata back-end that will be supporting multiple users in a production environment. I need to use variables in the connection string as the user/pass will be changed every 3 months.
For the gist of the application:
In it's most basic form - I have a search form which works correctly - it pulls results into a listbox and the user then double clicks the list box which will then open a form that is bound via table adapter to the back-end table (Teradata). My connection string is fine everywhere in the application. My problem is using a modified connection string for the "fill" function of the table adapter once the form is opened.
I'm using the code below for the on-load event and keep getting an "invalid connection string" - again, the connection string works fine everywhere else in the app, and the variables etc... are working correctly.
Private Sub adaptertest_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Dim DBConnStr As String = "Provider=TDOLEDB;Data Source=TDDEV;Persist Security
[Code].....

Lets say my program requires a password of "vbforums" to bootup. The user enters "vbforums" and clicks enter to proceed to the program.I want to make a registry value in the registry under my program with that text. And now on load up i would want to be able to check to see if the correct password is in that specific spot in the registry.I have never fooled with the registry so im pretty lost, i tried doing a bit of searching on the forums but couldn't find anything. Anyone know how i would do this?

My computer's assettag formats like "1234567.1", the number behind the dot represent Node ID, which is assigned automatically by BMC chip during computer POST.
The question is, when I am using objSMBIOS.SMBIOSAssetTag to retrieve the assettag, I can only get "1234567", the node ID".1" is missing. However some other DMI tool such as "RW" can get the full assettag with out problem.
Now I need to script this to get node ID information every time OS starts, so I ask why the node ID part of asset tag is gone? any other way can I get SMBIOS type 3 infromation?

Label1.Font = FontDialog1.Font
Label2.Font = FontDialog1.Font
Label3.Font = FontDialog1.Font
I want iterate through the labels in a For..next loop like so:

I am writing a small app that is retrieving data from a device connected to a virtual com-port. I connect without problems to the device using the settings 9600-8-N-1.
I need to send the command <esc>MS , the device then sends back the data to a computer. I have tried this using Hyperterminal with success. I also did this with Excel and VBA. I used the MSComm32 Active X control:
MSComm1.Output = Chr$(27) + "M" + "S" + Chr$(13)
Msgbox(MSComm1.Input)
This made the data from the device pop up in a messagebox. I am writing a winforms app in vb.net, using VS2005. I have a form, on which I have a Placed a SerialPort control, named sp. My sample code is as follows:
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal
sender As System.Object,
ByVal e
[CODE]...
This returns the error message "Error: expecting a command". I have done som tests in HyperTerminal, and have concluded with:
-If I dont send <esc>, I get error "Expecting a command"
-If I send wrong command (ie MD instead of MS) i get error "Bad command"
Based on this, I suspect that I don't pass the escape character correctly to my device. So I wonder how to do this?

I am developing a software which will connect to a SQL SERVER situated at Head Quarters over a VPN connection.But for times when VPN is disconnected I want my applications at the branches to connect to a local Sql Server installed at a local server.Now all the applications at each of the local machines have their connectionstring stored in their App.config file.When the VPN is disconnected we have to change each of the connection strings on all the applications in each machine. Is there a way to do it automatically switch the connection string depending on whether the Server is reachable or not, and to store the connectionstring at centralised location.

I'm trying to change my connection string to w/e the user wants. After a few tips here and there, this is what I've come up:
1: In my settings I've added - Name(login), Type(String), Scope(User), Value(Nothing)
2: Here is the code I'm using
Private Sub LoginForm1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
'Here I'm checking if the login in my.settings is there
'If not, I'm going to let the user choose what database
[code]....
The error I get is: Format of the initialization string does not conform to specification starting at index 0.here -
Dim con As New OleDbConnection(My.Settings.login)
When I have my con equal to when I added the datasource from it works.
