View 7 RepliesSo for an intro to programming class, we use visual basic, and i have to write a program that reverses the characters in a string. I've written a code that (i think) turns the string into an array, and then used the array.reverse method to reverse the characters.
I feel like my code is correct, but clearly it is not....when i run the program, there are no bugs, but instead of giving me any part of the input string, it returns "System.Char"
I'm a TOTAL beginner, and clearly not very good at this sort of thing, but here's my code for my "reverse" button:

I'm using the following code to read in a highscores file with the score written first and the player's name written to the next line, and then display the top 3 scores or fewer if there aren't 3 scores written to the file. A highscores display should have the scores sorted with the highest first so that's what this program tries to implement.
Array.sort() isn't doing a damn thing. In fact, the program's not even reversing the arrays like it should either. I've tested array.sort() this way with the names and scores arrays given explicitly and it works fine. I thought maybe it was still reading the data as string even though it's declared otherwise but it rounds off decimals when I change the array type to Integer so I'm pretty sure it's not that.
I have no idea why reading the data in from a file changes how it's sorted. My teacher didn't understand what was going on either. Does anyone know what's going on here?

I have made an employee list and linked it to an Access database. The initial problem I was having is that in my program I had to link their ID's and names so if you click on an employee in the listbox, his or her's ID would automatically display in the textbox below. Since I did not know how to do so, I decided to make an array and store the ID and names separately while the listbox is being compiled. And so, the form became linked and adding became easy to code.But my problem came in deleting an employee. When deleting the name should be removed from the list, but this is where the order of the arrays messed me up. How do you maintain the order of the array? Here is the code I used. Since it doesn't have an inline reverse function, I've tried several other methods to no avail: everything from copying the nodes into an array (which has a built-in reverse function), reversing it, and then copying it back into the TreeNodeCollection to using a custom reversing algorithm. Nothing has succeeded.

Any ideas as to why, or how, additional nodes are being added? It doesn't make sense to me as to why that would happen. All I'm doing is changing the values of nodes that already currently exist.Edit: In addition to this method, another possible way to approach it would be to sort the treeview in reverse order in the first place (I think by using an ICollection, or possibly IComparer?), but I've no idea how to accomplish this. I want to sort the lists by the second item in the contained lists but I don't know what parameter is needed in the .sort method. What do I need to put in as a parameter. I read something about writing a comparer function and putting that in the brackets but I don't understand how that works.

I'm creating this program where the user inputs their name in this one textbox, and they click on the button where it should come up with their name in reverse(Last Name, First Name) in a message box. My message box doesn't work. My code does show I'm using the If statement because I'm trying my make sure the user is inputting letters only and nothing else. I have written a simple VB.net application which saves information to an RFID tag. I am now trying to compress my data. The solution I have come up with involves bitwire operation.Basically I store 2 numbers per 1 byte (0-9, 10 being a period, 12 possibly being a negative/positive flag,13,14,15 unused as of yet).The code I am using basically shifts the byte containing a number left, 4 spaces, then 'OR's it against another number.Therefore 12 is now represented as 00010010. The problem i'm having is decompressing. Obviously getting the '1' back is easy, as I just shift right 4, then grab it. I need to append or remove the last 4 bits.My solution after many headaches was to reverse the bit order, shift left 4, then reverse, then tostring it.

I seem to have a huge issue right now trying to grab different pieces of a string to place them in a different order in a list. Unfortunately i can't just find the placeholders for the strings and extract the data that way so i was using indexOf to find commas in the string provided. the problem i'm having is that i can assign the first comma and extract 0 - "," but i'm stuck on how to progress the indexof so it will move through the string submitting everything between the comma's.
