(The same exe file, the same sql server and so on).Now, only when loading few forms I receive the following message: n error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)Note that when we log in to the application, a connection is needed. The user verifying is working fine; it means that the connection is working properly.

1. Do I have to install SQL Server Express on the Server before I can install my database on it?

View 5 RepliesI have recently developed a back end database in SQL server 2008 R2 and attached it to a application in VB express 2010.Everything works fine and when i publish the application, it works fine on my machine, but once i try to setup up the application on another machine i get the error message: A network related or instance specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server was not found or not accessible please verify the instance name is correct or allow remote connections.I have read numerous forums on this saying about changing the connection string and instance name.but with being novice i dont understand what needs to be changed etc.The sql server allows remote connections, but i am unsure what else needs changing to allow the application to work with the database on another machine.

Basically back in VB6 days, I created several VB6 apps with Access as the backend database. I'd package my Access db file with the application setup, which copied it on to a shared network drive, and then different computers on the LAN could use the same backend database file, and that worked just fine. With SQL and VB .Net, I've done work with a SQL database hosted on a remote server, so you can basically build your query string easily and anyone can connect to it from anywhere, and it works just fine.However, what I'd like to do is have a local SQL express database as the backend for a VB .Net application and make a setup program that can install it in a way that it could be shared on a Local area network, without the user who is installing the application do anything.
I know about building a connection string with the local machine name, but I don't really have any experience with including an actual MDF file with the application. Does anyone know how it works, and is it a better approach? Does it work similar to placing an access file in a shared unc path?I know that ClickOnce (which is awesome) can install SQL express easily on a user's machine. However, the key is that I want SQL express to be installed only on the machine that is going to be the database server in a LAN enviornment, and not on every machine, unless it is neccesseary. And then how does your VB app know how to build the connection string to access the database from any machine on the local share?

Plan is to host this server so people can login to use the the application and verify they have a valid account. I would like to host all the account information in SQL due to the possiblity of hundreds of users at any given time. I also need the ability to add data to the database for users registering for the first time. The SQL server will need to be able to access the SQL Server databases remote via WAN.
View 1 RepliesI am trying to re write a VB6 program using MS Access, many years ago, using VB 2010 express and SQL server 2008 R2 Express. I have a database with several tables, which I created using the designer. I am able to connect to the database and select data and display it in textboxes etc in vb code. What I have not been able to in code is to INSERT rows DELETE rows or UPDATE any data in the tables. I can do any of these operations using the Query Designer, but I want to do it in code. I can post some code if necessiary, but I thought it might just be some property that I had not set in the designer.

It's probably just a case of me not looking in the right place or not seeing the obvious, but does anyone know if a machine with just version 2.0 of the .NET Framework should be able to run a VB.NET Express application which accesses a SQL Server Express database file? Or is there an additional requirement for a non-development machine to have some kind of SQL Server Express runtime component in addition to the 2.0 Framework?It seems to be counterintuitive to expect that a VB.NET application would be able to access any kind of SQL Server data without having some kind of SQL Server host component (Express or otherwise) installed. But then again, it seems just as counterintuitive that Microsoft would require the download and installation of the new framework as well as a separate database runtime in order for the average user to run an application with accesses a local SQL Server Express database.To me, it runs contrary to the whole concept of XCopy deployment to require more than just the application's files and .NET Framework for an application to run properly. But nothing I've read so far explicitly indicates that a user would require anything more than the app files and the framework to run an application which accesses SQL Server Express data. But...I can't get any VB Express applications which uses a SQL Server Express databases to run on any machine that doesn't have SQL Server Express installed.What am I missing?(Apologies if this isn't the right group to post this in.

I am able to view and edit the data using a DataGridView on a second form (tutorial made this very easy). I need to work with the data in the table within the application. how to easily load the entire table into an array or even read the table a row or cell at a time so that I can make all of the data available for manipulation within the application (the tutorials only seem to show how to display the data).

I've got a datagrid with checkboxes which calls a routine called checkbox_CheckedChanged. So far, so good. I've managed to get it to work out the value of another column in the dataview, which allows me to ascertain the id of the row I'm dealing with. I'm trying to get it to change the value of the column which defines the initial value of the checkboxes, but the SQL I've written doesn't work when called by vb.net - it does work when entered manually into SQL server, however. I have developed an ASP.Net 2.0 application and I am facing problem in sending email from my Web Server. Following is the VB code I have used to send email from my web application. Thing is when I try to send email from my local system (laptop) the email goes out fine and reaches the recipient address instantly but when I try to send email from my web server it fails.My hosting provider gave me a relay-host address for sending out email. The email goes out fine but the relay host has an annoying amount of delay in email delivery which is a problem during the sign up process.

View 6 RepliesThe code works fine when I run it locally, yet as soon as I have uploaded to our dev server it doesnt run, but also doesnt error.I did some research and found that I should have the thread impersonate the WindowsIdentity, which I have done but still the thread does not work, I also tried increasing the max threads in IIS and still nothing.Im running IIS 7.5 on Windows 2008 R2.The method being executed on a new thread is in a class in the App_Code folder and looks like:

We have a WCF service hosted in IIS that currently calls a VB6 DLL to do part of its job. This works fine, but we can't deploy the service to a 64-bit target environment without configuring IIS to run it in a 32-bit worker process.I am currently investigating ways around that restriction. Porting the VB6 DLL to .NET is not possible for various reasons, so I created an ActiveX EXE wrapper around the DLL in VB6, so that the service can run in 64-bit and the VB6 parts in 32-bit.
When I tested the service I got this error:
Type: System.UnauthorizedAccessException
Message: Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {9AE7303B-D159-43F6-B1A5-52D297581820} failed due to the following error: 80070005.
After some Googling I found that this is due to either:
Calling an MS Office component
DCOM permissions not being configured
NTFS file permissions not allowing read/exec access to the IIS worker process identity (ASPNET in my environment)
Of these:
Definitely not applicable Also not applicable; I am not hosting the EXE in DCOM or COM+, just a simple COM out-of-process activation
This looks likely; however, I checked the permissions, and NTFS reports that the Users group (which ASPNET is a member of) does indeed have read/exec access to the file I tried calling the EXE from a unit test fixture, which is executed in my admin-level account rather than the IIS worker process account, and it worked fine, so the error is definitely something to do with permissions. I'm not sure what to do next.
UPDATE:The IIS virtual directory is configured for Anonymous+Windows access; the WCF service uses only Anonymous authentication, the Windows authentication is for the VS debugger. Task Manager reports that the aspnet_wp.exe process is definitely running in the ASPNET account.I explicitly granted Read and Execute access to the ASPNET and IUSR_<machine> accounts on all the COM exes and dlls involved. This made no difference.
I explicitly granted Local Launch and Local Activation access to the ASPNET and IUSR_<machine> accounts on the relevant interfaces in the DCOM configuration. This made no difference either.Keep trying to get this working somehow.Go the whole hog and host the EXE in COM+.Give up. Tell users that the WCF service must be configured to run in a 32-bit app pool on 64-bit Windows.
I have mpd server working in Linux machine. Code works fine until there are spaces in directory name.
How can I handle spaces?
