i am developing this program in .NET (2010) and i connect on a form in VB6 using this code;

now, how can i set a global variable that is accessible from my VB6 form to .NET(2010)?A little detail:VB.NET calls VB6 frmLogin then if Access Grant, x = 1, Exit() then VB.NET stores the value of x into database.
I get nothing but headaches when I try to update settings in the My.Settings class, or when I try to assign a newly assigned setting to a variable. Sometimes the settings update OK at run time; other times times they update only after the application closes; and other times still they appear to update at run-time, then when I close the program and reopen- they go back to the previous settings.This is how I assign a value to a my settings and how I assign a setting value to a variable.[code]

View 10 RepliesI am binding a textbox's text value setting to my a variable in my configuration file. I only consider the input from this textbox to be valid if it's an integer number bigger than 1. Right now what I was doing is letting the user write whatever he wanted in the box, and I'd only let him save the settings after calling a validation function. The problem seems to be that my binding variable in the Settings class seems to be being updated as soon as the textbox is being edited, and that's a behaviour i'd like to skip. How can I do this?
View 3 RepliesIm trying to create a diary system that on click event of the built in calander in vb.net opens the current diary entry for that day. i am using the my.settings variables to store the entrys the problems i am having is how to create a my.settings variable automaticly if one dosnt exist for that date (will be using the date of the clicked day as the name e.g. 10/5/2011)
So basicly i want the user to be able to click through the dates on the calander and the entry be displayed in a text box next to it, blank if nothing is there and the user can edit/save them after just need the code to auto create and i guess how to search the my.settings im quite new to using this storage, i normally use text files. the pic shows the program so far, it has one diary entry but it has no relation to the date. the label is linked to the calander also , displaying the selected date.

View 5 RepliesI'm currently working with a client's VB.Net code, which was developed for them by a small development shop a few years ago and which they purchased and have been maintaining and uprgrading since. This client's primary developer is out on indefinite (likely permanent) medical leave and I'm now filling in until they bring in a full timer (as I'm a contractor here). My current task is to add some functionality to a the VB.Net code they purchased. I'm finding practices and techniques in the code that absolutely baffle me and can't make the code do what I want. I'm starting to wonder if it's me and was hoping to get some thoughts on the code I've encountered.
For example: Setting a variable to accept the result of a function by calling the function with many parameters, clearing the parameters in the function, setting them to some value, calling another function with those new values, then never using the values returned by the functions. I'll add a code snippet in the first comment since this is already getting long.

In our projects we use setting variables to store user setting for the applications. Moreover, with every latest version of the applications, we upgrade these variables to retain user settings.Normally, this works fine, but recently one of my end user reported an error i.e.Configuration System failed to initialize". The error is related to user.config file. Therefore we requested the user to send us his file.After received the folder, we noticed that it contains 3 files (3begfjb.newcfg,3begfjb.tmp and user. config). 3begfjb.tmp is an empty file, while 3begfjb.newcfg and user.config are identical files. We tried to open these files but the data in user.config isn't proper xml rather its unreadable formatted file.Do any you guys had experienced this sort of issue or any ideas how and what may have created these files and corrupted user.config file.

The variables in the brackets [example] do not actually have brackets in them in the original code. These are where the issues are. For both variables, it says, "The type for variable [variable] will not be inferred because it is bound to a field in an enclosing scope. Either change the name of [variable], or use the fully qualified name (for example, 'Me.[variable]' or 'MyBase.[variable]')." Now, I'm not entirely sure if this is a stupid question or not, as I'm used to VB '98 because that's what we use in my programming class at High School. let me know why this won't work.
-Note: The intention of this program is to continually loop the generation of numbers for this list until I tell it to stop. Button1 ends the program, Button2 generates the list one time only, Button3 is supposed to loop the generation of the list, and Button4 is supposed to end the loop, but not the program.

This is what i am confused about; does the compiler creates a new variable automatically when i use the if statement without strictly declared variable? What approach is better in sense of performance?
I am looking for a good resource on variable naming conventions to illustrate variable type and where variables are declared. So I will have public variables, Private variables, private or local variables. I also may want to declare variables with the same name in different class code (i.e. in the code behind different forms). I am assuming good coding would dicatate a prefix for declaration location.

Now I have the need to get a current value from a bindingsource in a property of a user control.In a previous thread I had tracked down the "Object variable or With block variable not set" to the return in the Get block of a property. At the time I was only using the Set so I just commented out the offending code until I needed it.

The error does not occur during a system compile, only upon saving the container object of the user control. As I said the Set works correctly, only the Get causes the error.I would like to know what I am missing/misunderstanding and am open to other suggestions of handling retrieving the current value of a bindingsource in a user control.
