Setting Windows Service Dependencies With System.ServiceProcess
Jan 26, 2011
I figured out that i could use Dim serv() As ServiceController = System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController.GetServices(".") to get my services.
Now i want to set (change) the depending services for some.
how to use DependentServices.SetValue.

how can I import the System.ServiceProcess namespace into a WPF project in VB.net (not C#)? The ServiceController object is not in the toolbox in VS2008 and can't see to figure it out. Any ideas? If that particular namespace cannot be imported into WPF projects, could somebody suggest another way of controlling windows services from a WPF application? I know this framework is focused more on multimedia apps, but would really like to switch over some of my tools to WPF.

im not 100% sure this is the right place for this, but thought I'd give it a shot.I created a windows service, and it accepts startup parameters to set the connection string for my database connection. (-L for live, -D for dev, -S for stage etc.)[code]I installed the service using installutil (I already tried using sc.exe) and I can't specify startup parameters. So if I go into Services and go into my service properties and manually type -D into the Startup Parameters box and hit start, I get -D as my parameter, life is good. But the parameter won't save in the startup parameters box, it just reverts to a blank box whenever I close the properties page.[code]

What are best practices when creating a custom event log for a windows service? I've set my service on a timer so it fires up every day (except weekends) at the same time. For the last 3 days, I've been getting the following error: The source 'DMCS57ExportService' is not registered in log 'DMC S57 Export Log'. (It is registered in log 'DMCS57ExportLog'.) " The Source and Log properties must be matched, or you may set Log to the empty string, and it will automatically be matched to the Source property.Based on that error, I know there's something wrong with the code that creates the custom event log (see below)

I have written a VB.NET windows service application. I installed it in my system using the Installutil.exe. But this is not available in the client's system because the .NET is not installed in that system. Is there any way to install the .NET windows service application without the Installutil ?

I'm trying to deploy a service created in VS2010 and am continually getting this error, along with the description that is expecting an application manifest, when trying to use installutil (.net 4.0)to install the service.I've developed the service both in a 32 and 64-bit environment, and tried installing in both a 32 and 64-bit environment. This does not seem to have an effect.

I've seen loads of programs that use an icon in the system tray to let you interact with a windows service that is running on your machine but I am curious as to how this works. As I understand it, unless a service marks itself as 'interactive' then it has no way to communicate with the user's desktop and doing so is discouraged by MS (and even causes an alternate desktop to appear temporarily in Server 2008 in some cases). So I want to try and avoid doing this but I cant think how else I would do it, and even if I marked my service as interactive I'm not too sure how I could actually get it to show a notification icon in the system tray.
I assume I would have to use Windows APIs, unless just using the windows forms NotifyIcon class would work. I considered just having the system tray icon in a totally separate application that just communicates with the service via named pipes or TCP etc but I'm pretty sure this isnt how other programs do it because with most of them if you just kill the process that the service is running in then the icon disappears so it must actually be directly running from the service.

one of the apps that I wrote a couple months ago is getting to be rolled out to my production floor; one issue tho - It works great as a standard executable (you double-click, it starts and waits for data), however, I cannot get it to start as a system service.
I've already done a little bit of research for how to create a system service, but most of the information that I've come across is point to VC# or Visual Studio 2010 - I'm not finding much for VB 2010. Additionally, I'm only using VB 2010 Express and I'm pretty sure that I don't have the Windows Service application template's on my PC.
My application does have a "UI", but there isn't any user interaction; it starts and just sits minimized in the system tray polling a directory for the existence of a file - i.e. the windows form is not required.

I have created a windows service in VB in visual studio 2008. The purpose of this service is to copy files from one network drive to the UNC path for a sharepoint file location. It works properly on a Windows XP machine, however when I installed it on Windows 7, I am now getting Access Denied error messages. In troubleshooting, I tried to simplify things to see if I can see the directory that I'm trying to write to, and the System.IO.Directory.Exists is returning false. I am able to see other netowrk shared drives, just not this particular one, and it appears to only be an issue from my Windows 7 machine, as I can do this with a Windows XP box.
I have also tested this code in a Windows forms application and it will work as expected. It appears only when I move to the service.

i have a Windows service that is hosting a WCF service through net.tcp and this is working great. I have also created a WCF service application. I am trying to add the net.tcp service reference to the service application. Then I add it to the GAC that goes ok but if I try to RegAsm the WCF service application to allow it to be called from Server.CreateObject I get the error:
Warning: Type library exporter encountered a type that derives from a
generic class and is not marked as
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)]. Class interfaces cannot be
exposed for such types. Consider marking the type with
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)] and exposing an explicit
interface as the default interface to COM using the
ComDefaultInterface attribute.
It does not work. I have tried to call it through a class library but this does not work either as the end point is not set correctly.

In the past I had the indexing service installed on a Windows Server 2003 and used it to index files for my website. I did this by executing an OleDbCommand with a query and a connection string. How do I accomplish the same thing with the new "Windows Search Service" (Windows Server 2008) by using VB.NET? Does this work the same way so that I only need to change the Provider name which has been "MSIDXS.1" up to now? Case true, what is the new Provider name?

When you create a Windows Service, you create a list of the services you want to start. The default is this:
ServicesToRun = New System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase() {New Service}
Can you have multiple instances of the same Service class (that bind to different addresses or ports), like this?
ServicesToRun = New System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase() {New Service("Option1"), New Service("Option2")}
Or will that cause problems? Should we use two different classes instead?

System.IO.File.WriteAllBytes(myLocation,MyByteArray)

Dim ImageData As Byte() = Nothing
Dim fsAttachment As IO.FileStream = Nothing[code].....

We have a server with multiple services written in .Net 1.1 and 3.5 running on a Win 2003 server. Everything runs fine, but when we stop a certain service, an unrelated service stops. I have checked and neither has any dependencies. The service we stop is in 3.5, and the unrelated service that incorrectly stops is in 1.1. We get no error messages, nor event log errors, so we are baffled.Does anyone have an idea as to what may be causing this?

Basically i have a wcf service that returns a dataset of 2000 records.
When i run the function from an application i get the standard error.
"The maximum message size quota for incoming messages (65536) has been exceeded. To increase the quota, use the MaxReceivedMessageSize property on the appropriate binding element."
Now i know how to fix this problem at the client end. What i'm wandering is if there is any options i can set at the server that will automatically cause the MaxReceivedMessageSize property at the client to be increased.

I've created a windows service and started a deployment project for it. I have the project installer class in the service project and I've added the "Standard output etc.." from the service project as custom actions for the Deployment Project. When I attempt to install it, I get the error "Specified service already exists", which shouldn't happen (even though the service does exist) because the installer should be removing the old service and installing the new one.
I've checked that the versions are different, and that the Product Code is also different, also RemovePreviousVersions is set to true. Can anyone tell me why it isn't uninstalling my old service when I update then install again? .S: MODS: DO NOT MARK MY POST AS ANSWERED, IT IS RUDE, YOU HAVE NO IDEA IF YOU'VE ANSWERED MY QUESTION!Sorry, it gets ignored in my signature.Mods
