Settings Overwritten During Upgrade Installations?
Feb 12, 2007
is there a way to keep the settings stored in My.Settings from being "reset" during an upgrade installation? Every time I put out a new build of any application using My.Settings the settings in My.Settings are reset to whatever they are in the visual studio designer.
The company has been using Visual Studio 2008 and .NET Framework 2.0 for approximately 2 years. During that time we released several versions (4.x.x) of our program to the public and were able to preserve the user's settings using My.Settings.Upgrade.During the past development cycle we upgraded the program to Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 and changed the version to 5.x.x. Now, when a user upgrades from 4.x.x to 5.x.x they lose all of their settings. However, in all upgrades after that point (ie 5.0 to 5.1) all the user's settings are once again preserved.I checked C:Documents and Settings<USER_NAME>Local SettingsApplication DataCompanyName and it contains two directories:
ApplicationName_Url_aaa ApplicationName_Url_bbb
where aaa and bbb are 32 character strings. All of the user.config files for the 4.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_ Url_aaa directory. All of the user.config files for the 5.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_Url_bbb directory.Based on this information it seems like something changed when we converted our program to VS2010 and Framework4 that is now causing a different 32 character string to be generated. However, we have been unable to track it down.
Every time I compile my app and the version number changes (I have an auto-incrementing build number), I lose the user-configured app.config settings, since they're stored in the AppData folder for a specific version. Essentially, every release of my application starts from scratch as far as user settings go.
While this is a mild annoyance in development, it raises the question as I approach deployment/release - if I use the app.config to store my user settings, will the user's personalized settings be hosed every time they install a patch that changes the version number of my app? If so, is there an easy way to "upgrade" the settings from the previous release? I know that using HKCU in the registry is another option, but I like the ease of the My.Settings namespace, and I'd like to stay with app.config.
Background info: I have an app that I recently had to upgrade from VB6 to VS2008. It was only an upgrade so there are still some VB6 components in the app.My problem is that I get the following error from one of the forms in my app.
Err Number: 5 Source: mscrolib
Err Decription: Exception has been thrown bt the target of an invocation. My problem is that I don't experience this error during debugging. Out of 20 computers 5 will have this error, the rest will be fine.
The exception occurs when a form is opened that has: The form has an AxMSFlexgrid on it 2 textboxes and a command button. where to look for the problem, or a possible solution. The Problematic installations is running XP SP3 and .NET 3.5 SP1 (installed)
I have some conditionals in my InitializeComponent which affect the layout based on some variables. Unfortunately, it seems like whenever I rebuild my application, this code is reverted back to its previous state. Is this code being regenerated based on the Designer interface? Is there a way to prevent it from doing this?
How to check if a file can be overwritten? Currently I have a problem with files that are 1. In use 2. In a folder where I don't have permissions to edit them 3. Read Only How to check (check, not overwrite) if a file can be overwritten?
What's happening is that the data is always being overwrited. I mean there is only one row which is constantly being overwrited
Public Class Form1 Private Sub UpdateTable(ByVal Details As String()) Dim DataSet As New LoginServerDataSet Dim Adapter As New LoginServerDataSetTableAdapters.DetailsTableAdapter Dim Manager As New LoginServerDataSetTableAdapters.TableAdapterManager [Code] .....
I've rendered a simple rectangle for the background and a bunch of star polygons randomly placed across the form. On the form is a picturebox component which I can move around, but for some reason it overwrites the background and stars when it passes over them. Could someone please explain what is going on there? I've tried performing searches, but have been unsuccessful in finding anything useful.
I'm trying to access 2 tables within the same DB in Access 2007, but I have a problem when saving information to one of the tables, I can do it with one table but when I try to save the information to the second table the data gets overwritten, not sure why, because I use the same procedure for both of them, just changing the variables to avoid mixed data, this is the code that I use to connect with the DB and fill the DataSet:
Again, it works fine when saving info to one table, but using the exact same procedure (with different variables) saves the new data but overwrites the previous information
I have make a Tabbed webbrowser. Browser is working fine. but when ever I navigate a page titles of tabs does not changed but overwritten as shown in picture there is on second Tab Text is overwritten. I am using this code for tab title
And this for window title Me.Text = CType(tabs_bowsers.SelectedTab.Controls.Item(0), ExtendedWebBrowser).DocumentTitle & " - My Browser" I want to make my tabs to change title as in firefox titles changed, no overwritten.
I need to create an application, which it connects to a IBM AS400 ATL to query LTO3 tapes that have expired and to be returned back to the datacentre. Tapes that have data written on them and not expired will need to be sent to an offsite location. Even if not an application, possible a script to do so.A email from the server will report the tapes require to go offsite and which tapes came be returned which can be overwritten with data again.
I have the following structure:OLD: frmMain (WinForm)uscStat (UserControl with Grid) In frmMain I'm able to make some settings and load the result of the settings via LinQ into the Grid of the uscStat.
I just wondered if you can or can't save arrays using the settings system object. There seems to be no way of entering it at designtime. It seems implied you cannot create new user settings.subobjects at runtime. I'm looking to find the easiest way to save a populated array of PictureBox's. If the only way is a self/custom made/managed .ini file then I need to know so i can start on that but I was hoping to use some of all this phaff in the new frameworks usefully.
I am rewritting my application to conform to ms standards. We used to save all settings to registry for user settings, servername, size and locations.so we are now saving them into My.Settings app.config the only problem is that each time there is an update clickonce will isntall the newupdate but now all settings are loist and user has to save everything all over again..
I am trying to follow the book here but it seems i keep getting stuck somewhere. registry has worked fine for years but i understand we must move on, but if stuff like this happens then i just wasted a long time converting all code to conform for it to not work..
Is there a way to maintain application modified Settings in the settings files after a program update? i.e. I have 10 or so values in the settings file and the users can modify them... when I send a program update they revert back to what I initially programmed them to be.
i have created a user setting named 'setmeup' as string, scope = user, value = "magical meow meow!".in my code i access it and assign it a new value like this...my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!"my.settings.save()application.restart()when the application restarts, i expect the my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!" but when i check its contents its still "magical meow meow!".but when i use application.exit() instead of application.restart() and manually restart the program, my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!" which is correct.what must i do? i want to use application.restart() because i don't want the users to double-click the icon again to start the program. i want the program to restart automatically.
1. I can't find the file which reflects changes to user settings. This might be because I just can't find it (I can see a bunch of user.config files but they are all empty - weird!), or...
2. I'm not actually saving them when I think I am.
Regarding 2. - do I need to invoke
Is this all I need? And if so, why are my user.configs empty?
my old vb6 program used to store to ini files now with .net I rekon I need to do something new.. was thinking XML but then in searching around I stumbled apon this my.settings stuff.. so I followed the instructions but something strange is going one..
1. whats the difference between the standard my.settings and adding a new class that is of settings ? anything ?
2. I made 10 new settings in the setting manager but when I try to change then it gives me the old squiggle line saying no go.
I have created a settings-file for my plug-in-based app. When the mainApp writes the settings to the file, the pluginApp should read the settings from the settings-file (when opening or at runtime even better), but somehow it reads the settings from the app.config-file. This means that the pluginApp never will read the settings according the values of the file.
I have written an address book and for its database, I used Access to create a .mdb database and store my data programmatically into this .mdb file. However, the problem is that when reading and saving data to this kind of database I have to use Jet 4.0 which is NOT available on 64-bit systems and I have to compile my application as 32-bit in order to run on all systems.I just want to know how is upgrade to SQL?I never used SQL, can I create a stand-alone database file using SQL like Access and create tables/fields so I can modify it programmatically?I also need the database file to be independent and don't need any special requirements to run on target systems, like the .mdb file I've created in Access!
I saw that you can also use a "Settings File" (Add new Item)to add your settings instead of the application settings. But I can't seem to write any values to the file. Someone with experience with the "Settings1.settings"?
Small questions about the settings.settings. Are these settings saved into the registry? I'm want to use and external file for my connection-commands. I don't want to use the registry to store the strings. What do you recommend?
Possible Duplicate: Best Strategy for moving from VB6 to .NET Conversion tool comparisons for visual basic 6.0 Is there a good tool anyone can recommend to convert a commercial VB6 application into a VB.NET application. I have discovered some free ones and some commercial one's, but can't find any reviews and opinions of developers who have tried and failed or tried and succeeded.
What are the complexities involved? I know that .NET uses managed code and multi threaded apartments etc whereas VB6 is based on COM.
I have a VB.NET solution that I just upgraded. It was originally in .NET 1.1, I upgraded to .NET 2.0 and verified that it would build and run correctly. Then I upgraded from 2.0 to 4.0. It is still building with no errors, but when I try to run I am getting a NullReferenceException in Global.asax.vb. The really weird thing is, the line that is throwing the exception is this:
Dim dt As System.Data.DataTable I am not trying to use the variable, just declare it. Further down a Function is called that returns a DataTable and sets the variable, but I don't even get to that line. It is throwing the NullReferenceException on the Dim line. Has anyone run across this before? Is this some issue with upgrading?

I did a Rebuild Solution before posting. This is a web application and the only files I see in the bin folder are the dll files I am referencing. I'm not sure what else I should clean up.
My website is VB.NET 2.0. I already opened a it in VS2k8 and told it not to upgrade. Now I want to upgrade, how do I trigger it? All the posts say 'just open it in 2k8 and it will prompt you'. Well I did, and it did, and I didn't want to yet. Now I cant get it to come up.
I bought a script vbulletin for install it in my forum, now I have a discuzx forum on [url]...forum.php but I don't like this script.
