Sharing Microsoft Office Events With Processes (i.e. Windows Services) Via VB

Mar 27, 2009

Is it possible to expose an event in an Microsoft Office product to a Windows service? That is, are the Office product events shared with other processes like Windows services? I know I can handle these events in VBA code in Word/Excel. However if the code is disabled the handling does not occur. I want to be able to have a service run in the background to log these events as they occr.

What Are The Possible Events In Windows Services

May 16, 2011

Im making a services that will log every time it gets started and stopped. I have accomplished that easily, using the onstop and onstart events. Now, im trying to call an exe file that writes something on the log. im calling the exe file every 30 minutes, so i used a do while loop and a thread.sleep code. Now, I've put the loop inside the onstart event, i noticed that since its an infinite loop, the process never leaves the onstart event, and the services status is alway "starting".

OnPause And OnContinue Events Windows Services In VS 2008

Jan 8, 2010

I'm trying to write a windows service using vs 2008. I've worked some on services written with VS 2005, but I'm not sure if I've written one from scratch before. When I create my Windows Service, it creates a new class called Service1.vb. If I go to the methods available for Service1, I see OnStart, OnStop, New, and Finalize. The Windows Service that I have that was written in VS 2005 also has an OnPause and OnContinue events. I need these in my service as well.

So I'm guessing it has something to do with the fact that I don't have office loaded on my computer. Now I have another laptop, with office that I loaded this project on, and it works fine. So do I have to load office on this computer, or can I just reference something?

Using Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel In Windows Service

Feb 19, 2012

I'm wondering if you can use the Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel in a windows service application type.

I've a windows form application which opens an Excel file and do some actions and save it as another file. All this is working perfect in windows forms. When I copy the same code and paste it in a windows service, then it is not possible to open the file even.

I receive the following error message:

Sharing Objects Across WCF Services

Aug 16, 2010

Problem with WCF and Multiple Namespaces. The major difference I am having is that I don't control both ends of the wire.My setup is similar to this:[code]The first thing you do is login via the login service and receive a security ticket. The ticket object is located in the My.Objects namespace. For each subsequent call in My.Service1 and My.Service2 you have to pass in the security ticket to authenticate the call. The issue I am having is that instead of the client (a .net one for now but Java and others in the future) seeing one My.Objects.Ticket the references are resolving as My.LoginService.Ticket, My.Service1.Ticket, and My.Service2.Ticket. When the client tries to pass the object retrieved during login to any other function it is receiving an object mismatch error. How can I make each service resolve objects to the My.Objects namespace?

Sharing Code Between 2 Separate Web Services?

Jun 2, 2010

I have 2 seperate web services. They both run on the same machine. One of the functions is the same between the 2 web services. It is a huge function and i hate having to repeat code. Is there any way to share the code between the 2 services other than having one service request the function from the other service? I'm a bit hesitant doing it that way because im worried about performance. It would mean for each request into service A i'd need to create a service B instance and call it.

VS 2008 Sharing With Mdichildren Use Events?

Apr 19, 2010

I've been working on an application recently and it has exceeded the scope of a single form.I decided that it would be a good time to use an MDI container and split the interface up over a number of different child forms. As the application was written, there were a few different classes that were being instanciated on the original form.I've migrated these over to the MDI parent form so that I can allow all of the children to interact with them. The route that I'm going down right now is raising events on the child forms and watching for them on the MDI parent. The parent form is then doing whatever the child did to the instanciated classes in the past.

Turn A Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Chart Object Into A Microsoft.Office.Tools.Excel.Chart Object?

Aug 5, 2010

Basically I've coded an Excel 2007 project in VB.NET 2010 that allows you to create charts with a fair amount of interactivity. I want the user to be able to save and reopen this workbook and still have that interactivity in any already-created charts, so they don't have to re-create them.

When I create the charts, I use Sheet1.Controls.AddChart(...), which returns a Microsoft.Office.Tools.Excel.Chart with which I can handle events and such. However, when I reopen the file and look through the Sheet1.Controls collection, there are no Chart objects. Accessing the charts through Sheet1.ChartObjects.Chart gives me Interop Charts, when I need the Tools Charts.

Multithreading, Events And Cross Thread Data Sharing?

Dec 1, 2011

I am building a code library to be used by a 3rd party developer. Neither my code or the 3rd party have any UI controls involved. It's purpose is a combination of providing the ability to look up information from a database while at the same time polling it and throwing events when a set of conditions are met. Naturally the only way it's going to be responsive to the 3rd party library's commands is via multithreading since everything in a single thread stops once you start polling the database.

The sub I am using is part of an object that I create in the main thread and attempt to have it run via a thread, when a condition is met I have it update a property in that object, throw the event (or execute a callback in my latest attempt) and then attempt to have a simulator for the 3rd party control read the property. It's easy to setup the multithreading part, the hard part appears to be throwing the event so it is seen in the original thread and the data is available there. Any attempt to do this generates a cross thread error when the data is read.

I attempted to use delegates and calling methods asynchronously and using the callback function but still get cross threading errors. Is my only possiblity to use a background worker, using either the progress changed or runworker completed events? Even then am I going to be able to set the property in the function from one thread and read it in another?

'Office' Is Not A Member Of 'Microsoft'

Dec 22, 2009

I've had a program using Office Web Components operational for about 5 years. I just installed Windows updates to the Vista 64 operating system, and now under Visual Studio express edition with Visual Basic, I am getting over a hundred error messages related to the following:

'Office' is not a member of 'Microsoft'

So, for example, the program has references like
Microsoft.Office.Interop.Owc11.ChCharts
and I now get an error message

[Code]....

how to fix it so these error messages disappear? (Where did Office go, and does it still contain Interop.Owc11, wherever it is?)

Can't Get Microsoft.office.interop Referenced Anywhere?

Nov 5, 2010

I have been using Excel in vb.net for years and no problem but I have a new app and nothing is working. First I can't get Microsoft.office.interop referenced anywhere, which was weird. Then I can't instantiate Excel App.. Dim pExcel_App as New Excel.Application -- this gives me error "New cannot be used on an interface??But I can do this..Dim pExcel_App As New Excel._ExcelApplication -- where did this come from? Then I can't put anything into cells Dim wkbSheet As Excel.Worksheet wkbSheet.Cells(1,1) = "Title" --- this give me an error "Expression is a value and therefore cannot be the target of an assignment"

THe really weird thing is that I have an old app open at the same time that is just fine with all this code. AND the intellisense is different for each cell. The good one sets is as a range, the bad one says it is an object???I re-installed the MS PIA's but this didn't help.

Microsoft Office Launcher - Press A Key For Each Button?

I was bored and started to build a launcher for MS office. It has 5 buttons and each button launches a program, then my launcher closes. Each button has this

Me.Close()
Shell("C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12WINWORD.exe")

This works fine, but Word loads so fast that by the time the program has closed, word is in the background and i have to click on the taskbar to get it up. This kind of defeats the object of it. I'm trying to be lazy here!!Also, each button has an image on, but i want you to be able to press a key for each button. Is that possible? Ultimately Laziness?
