Storing SQL Strings In XML XElement Instead Of String To Preserve Line Breaks?
Jun 22, 2010
When it comes to storing SQL in code, most people use strings:Dim strSql As String = "Select Foo, Bar From FooBarTable Where Something = @Something"The problem is, when you have very long SQL strings, reading them in code becomes difficult. You can usually split the strings up like this:
Dim strSql As String = "Select Foo, Bar From FooBarTable " & _
"Where Something = @Something"
This causes a number of problems:

I have a WinForms app with a multi-line textbox. This displays and retains (after loading from the DB) line break characters fine. However if I assign the TextBox.Text value to a string variable and then re-assign the variable back to the TextBox.Text property, the line break characters are lost and replaced with a square character (can't past them here as they just paste as a line break!)

I've created a rich text box which stored the "textBox.Text" value in an SDF database. The storing works, but the formatting seems to be lost. Is this something that SDF databases can't handle? Do I need to store in binary or something? Not sure how to do that either.I'm using Visual Basic Express Edition with Winforms and writing in VisualBasic.NET btw This is how I store to the database:
Private Sub btnToolStripSave_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnToolStripSave.Click
Try
Me.Validate()
Me.SangerBindingSource.EndEdit()
[code]....
And this is how I insert the text in to the rich textbox
txtBoxText.SelectionFont = New Font("Verdana", 16, FontStyle.Bold)
txtBoxText.SelectionColor = System.Drawing.Color.RoyalBlue
[code]....

I am writing data from a vb project to an XML document. When I recall the data, all the previous notes are coming back as one long line of text. How can I break the lines by submission to the XMl document?
Code:
Private Sub btnSave_Click(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnSave.Click
Dim AcctNum = txtAcctNum.Text.ToString
'Dim note1 As String = ""

I got a program that generates 4 strings which I want to output to a RichTextBox. Getting them there isn't the problem, its getting them on separate lines I am puzzled with. As of right now, they are all just lined up one after the other, which isn't practical for what I need. I simply need 1 output per line, i.e.:
Output1
Output2
Output3
and so on.
How to insert line breaks?

How can I replace all types of line breaks (CR, LF and CrLf) using Regex?
Iīve tried different combinations of "
" and "
" but none finds them all.
formatedString = System.Text.RegularExpressions.Regex.Replace(text, "
", "[Exp 1]")
The following code does the job but it bugs my that I canīt seem to replace the Line Feed using Regexp.

I'm working with a class that inherits the XElement class.The new class is called MXElement.It adds some new functionality to it for navigating through the XML tree, as well as some more information regarding attributes, but that's not particularly important.My problem is that I have an XML Tree filled with XElement objects.However, when I create a new MXElement object from the XElement object before, it is just a copy of that object. This means that any changes that I make to this object will not effect the original tree.I suppose what I'm asking for is a way to build in the functionality for my MXElement class and keep references to the original XElement objects.If possible, I would really prefer to keep MXElement a child class instead of building a lot of extension methods for XElement.

I am using XElement to manipulate my xml file: to find target node and then add child node to it. But now I have one problem. Let's say my xml file looks like this:
<Report xmlns="MY_NAMESPACE"
<Width>100</Width>
<Height>100</Height>
[Code].....
The second <ReportItem> is the newly-added one, but sadly this is not a valid file (my parser is complaining in the further processing of xml file). So how can I make this new item look exactly like the existing one, without any namespace? This has been driving me crazy. I spent a whole day to figure out that I need to add the curly brackets so that it will find the target node (it doesn't work like what the link above says that it adds and searches the default NS automatically), but now it adds something unnecessary?

my interface is like this, i've put 4 text boxes above, followed by a Generate Button in the middle and a multiline text box below the Generate button (please see the attachment)
so all i want is when i click the Generate Button, i want the data entered inside the above 4 text boxes to display in the multiline text box at the bottom in 4 seperate lines and not in 1 row. Also i would like to have some line spaces.
this is the code i used
Code:
' This is used to display in Bold
OutputTextBox.Text = "" & TextBox1.Text & ""
' This is used to display TextBox2.Text
[Code]....
Just wondering, is it possible to put some tabs above the big multiline text box at the bottom, say like 4 tabs and each tab consists of a big multiline text box inside it. And then when clicked the Generate Button which displays different data ...

I am reading a field from my database that has line breaks in it and displaying it on an aspx page. I want to maintain the line breaks on the page. I believe this is more of a VB.NET issue than a DB problem. [URL]
So this is what I tried:
If IsDBNull(CourseHours.Value) Then
EventDesription.CourseHours = ""
EventDesription.CourseHours1 = ""
EventDesription.CourseHours2 = ""
EventDesription.CourseHours3 = ""
[Code] .....
I am pretty sure that CourseHours.Value contains the cr-lf's I am looking for. I attached a screen shot of my debugging session. When I query CourseHours.Value I see boxes or squares which I believe is signitying CR-LF. But my split is only ending up with one array element and it is a long string with all the course hours concatenated. What do I need to Split on?

I would like to add a XElement into an existing XElement as a child
Dim myDocument As New XDocument
myDocument.Declaration = New XDeclaration("1.0", "utf-8", "no")
myDocument.Add(New XComment("XComment"))

What is the best way? There will be at least one rule but there could be as many as 4 total.

I am trying to use the xml comments suggested (with VB in a ASP.net project in Visual Studio 2008).I want to give examples of how to use a class, for example, so I write [code]This is readable in the code itself, but the resulting help information in the Object Browser is unusable.The summary, parameters and returns stuff is OK,but the example code is all as one block, with a single space instead of the line endings.I know that most XML treats all whitespaces the same (space, line ending, etc.) but since <code> is described as being for multi-line code blocks, I expected it to respect line endings and indentation.Ideally it would colour-code the code as visual studio does, but the least it should do is respect space (similar to the HTML <pre> tag).Otherwise how is it useful for multi-line code blocks?

Are there any tools available for automatically formatting vb.net code - specifically for adding line breaks at a predefined line length? I'm working with a lot of code with long lines (thousands of lines), and manually reformatting it is quite time consuming. I've seen a number of tools for rearranging code into regions etc., but haven't found any that reformat with line breaks.

I'm trying figure out if this is possible. Basically, I need to create an XElement and then add one or more siblings to that XElement, but without a parent. I'll add that list of XElements to a Parent later, but need some flexibility in building this and other lists of XElements before doing so. Is this possible?
So I would have something like:
Public items As XElement = <ItemA>Something</ItemA>
And then I need to add an element so that the result looks like:
<ItemA>Something</ItemA>
<ItemB>Something Else</ItemB>
That result is what I need to pass around as a single object. I've messed arounnd with IEnumerable(Of XElement), but there is no .Add.

I'm building XML based on some data pulled from a database, and thought to try building the XML with LINQ2XML. The data is coming from a few different places, so I've been building the XML by sections, based on what I have populated in DataTable objects. Using the XElements and XAttributes, I can get one or the other, but I was wondering if anyone had insight in how to make the determination of whether to use XElement or XAttribute at the point where the XML is being built.[code]So it's in that LINQ query that I need to determine if ValueToParse, for example, has a valid value (non-empty). If it does, then I can add the node and it's value. If it DOES NOT, I need to add that named node, but with an attribute of 'xsi:nil="true"',The caveats are that that there are some descendants which repeat over different parents (for example, there's an AddressDetails section which contains AddressDetail elements. These AddressDetail elements can contain 0 or 1 Contacts groups of Contact elements, so adding a node to the Contacts node isn't a straightforward option as it would be if there was only ONE Contacts element).I don't usually USE LINQ, but it SEEMED like a good idea at the time XD

We decided to use the registry for handling our deployment with connection strings in our VB.net application.
The requirements are:
If the program cannot connect to the server, first check the registry for a connection string. IF not, create the folder and fill in the name, type, and data. Make sure its encrypted.
I have never edited or created anything in the registry.

I've came to the stage where i need to save strings and application settings for my application. The My.Settings have worked it out until now. Now i have to store so many settings it's hard to keep track of them. That is why i need something new. So i've been looking around in INI files which seems impressively simple - but not very flexible. I've also took a look at XML which seems to be something to dive in to. But what i need now is advice. How do you store settings?

I recently had to use my "String converter" to convert 20 lines of text to a single line of "VB .Net String coding". For example:
This is line one
This is line two
This is line three "with extra stuff"
[Code]...
"This is line one" & vbCrLf & "This is line two" & vbCrLf & "This is line three " & chr(34) & "with extra stuff" & chr(34) & vbCrLf & vbCrLf & "Empty line above me"What is the best way to represent these types of Strings? For example, if you have to display a long message or just a label with information that changes.I was thinking of some sort of text file collection, but it is a little useless to have 100 text files of information of 5-6 lines.

If e.CommandLine.Count > 0 Then
Dim IncomingCommand As String = e.CommandLine.Item(0).ToString
If IncomingCommand.Substring(0, 2) = "-1" Then
form1.close()
End If
End If
I am trying to make the program close if the -1 string is sent with the program. See my installer allows for me to run certain programs before it actually installs, but it doesn't shut down copies of the program itself. So I have a next startup instance set to shut the program down if the -1 is received. But if the program is not running it starts up instead. This is not desired. form1.close doesn't work. e.cancel = true doesn't work, etc etc. What can I do to make the program not start during this instance.

heres my situation and what i need done, will follow with code that sort of works
1. read a text file into a string2. for each word in string, append word to collection3. sort collection and remove duplicates4. check collection against existing collection and remove found items5 output final collection to text file
heres the code i have now, it inputs text to rich text box, replaces spaces with enter's and exports to text file, the reads file line by line to a collection and sortes and removes duplcates but takes way to long, mises words, locks up, ....it would also be helpful to remove all numbers and puntuation (anything not a-z)

My form contains several NumericUpDown controls. These controls show different amount of decimal places. Later in my code I put the different NumericUpDown.Value's in a string array arrStr() like so:
arrStr(1) = NumericUpDown1.Value
arrStr(2) = NumericUpDown2.Value
arrStr(3) = NumericUpDown3.Value
Then I print the array with the File.WriteAllLines function to a text file.
If for example NumericUpDown1.Value = 1.00, NumericUpDown2.Value = 2.30 and NumericUpDown3.Value = 2.124 the file has the following values in it:
1
2.3
2.124
[Code].....
I have tried Format which works, but that formatting method is not convenient as the amount of decimal places is already set for each NumericUpDown. It would be annoying to do the work again, but now with Format.
