I've been reading the MSDN Library and I need to use the StreamReader.Peek Method to check a text file while a I parse it.
When I try to use the Peek Method, I get an error saying , "Peek is not a member of System.IO.Stream."
I don't understand why it is happening because I am following the examples on MSDN, and I even checked other sources and it seems like I am doing everything correct. I am hoping it is just something small that I have missed.
I am also importing System, System.IO, and System.Text.
I experimenting with the Twitter streaming api, an am trying to open a stream for a user to consume events as they happen. I using a standard set of classes for making REST api calls to twitter. When using url... in a "GET" call the response stream never ends.I'm opening a StreamReader and reading the response as I would with any other REST call to Twitter. This is probably obvious to others, but how do I "consume" this stream... Is there a way to read the StreamReader as it's reading (meaning before it closes)? or maybe there a different method I can user to consume this stream.... again, I apologize if this seams to be elementary to some, but I can't figure it out at the moment. Here is the original source I started troubleshooting this with. This method was fabricated from a set of C# Classes I found in a forum on LinkedIn. At the line that reads "responseData = responseReader.ReadToEnd()" the method starts to "drink" the stream... but do so like a bottomless cup... reading this stream of data in real time before it closes (which is essentially until I stop debugging or kill the process) is the question I'm tackling.[code]
This write the opened twitter stream to the file, and every time I Tweet, Retweet, Delete, Direct Message... and so on.The file grows with a JSON object appended to the text. I used the Do While 0 < 1 for testing here, because I just wanted to see it working. I see on MSDN StreamReader Constructor Description that the New constructor is supposed to accept a Boolean value for "leaveOpen", but no such argument allowed when I try to add this to the constructor.Does anyone have a good example of how to do this with forcing and infinite loop or just a better approach than this... I would like to simply read new updates sent each time from Twitter, and address them accordingly? There is obviously a way, I'm just new to the concept of consuming a stream like this with out it being closed.
Is there a way to provide AlternateView class with a stream as its content, other than its constructor? There is a ContentStream property but it's read only.I am declaring the alternateview variable in the beginning of the code but I want to initialize it with a string some time later within the code.
View 3 Repliesi would like to ask is there anyway to read a txt file with UTF-8 encoding using streamreader or filestream. the txt file is contain some extended ASCII that makes me cannot read the characters properly. I hav tried Encoding.ASCII.GetString(Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes()) but still it return wrong character when it's reading extended ASCII code.
View 2 RepliesI don't know whether it is simple or not because i am new to programming. my requirement is : In my vb.net winform application, the filenames of the files present in "D:Project" willbe displayed in DataGridView1 control. Now I want to load these files one after another into memory stream buffer and add the headers("ID","Name","Class") to the content in the file. Then I want to save these files in "C:" with "_de" as suufix to the filename i.e.,sample_de.csv.
View 1 RepliesI have a problem with a streamreader in visual basic 2008.I am updating a database from text files on an ftp server. The streamreader works fine until the file is more than 100,000 bytes long.It reads until it reaches this point and then just ends. No error message, it just reads to this point which happens to be 2 fields out of 6 in the database stream. My question is - does the streamreader have a limit? And if so what is a workaround?

I'm writing a program that basically loads an entire text file into a streamreader variable, then reads this variable line by line and parses and writes a line into a new text file. I'm VERY new and my knowledge is mostly self-taught, but I can't seem to get out of this one. It works for smaller files, but it appears to reach a limit in characters at some point because in a file of 900 lines, it stops writing about halfway through 800 and there are no errors, the program actually completes and the message box pops up.
There are a few things with this code I already know I should fix, such as creating the new text file name, it's messy, I just don't know how.

I have a DataTable that contains 4 rows. I want to compare a value in one column in row 1 with the value in row 2. Something similar to this:
For Each row As DataRow in drRows
If row("column") <> row("column") 'I want the second row("column") to be the next row.
'do something else
End If
Next
How could I use the Peek function instead of the Pop. When I use Pop I get a message box and it works fine. When I change Pop to Peek nothing happens.

Creating an application that uses both namedpipes and TCPIP connectivity to pass data between 2 legacy applications.
When there is actual data to pass everything works great. But when the application is looking to see if there is any data to read from the named pipe side and there is no data, the Peek hangs until there is data. Is there a problem in the way I have it coded or is there a timeout that needs to be set?

in an winForm app in VS2010 win 7 compiling to x86, I try to do what Alvas.Audio seems to work. See (c# ex: [URL] for reference.
Dim data() As Byte = wr.ReadData(second * i, second)
The result give me data.length()=0. I do not have any exception, I can read format from it and whatever reader I use I got this problem.EDIT : After some tests, it seems like the uncompressed file I create in the first step (in PCM format, with .wav extension) can not be recognized by the Alvas.audio library for the second step. I must miss something around Audio file markups or something alike.
Here is the code that might be the source (basically this is step 1):
Dim functOut As String = String.Empty
Dim wr As Alvas.Audio.IAudioReader = Nothing
Dim fs As IO.FileStream = Nothing

How can I write the resulted stream to be sure I can read it again later?
Im making a desktop player for a online web radio, and for the program I wanna make it show all the stream info. Like the stream name, and such. However I dont know how to do this? I looked everywhere
The server url is setup like this "[URL]" And it has all the stream info and that there. So is there a way I can get the info from there onto like say a label? Live updates btw.
I have a problem with the cryptostream, if i write the stream to a memorystream the memory that the stream used is still alocated and i have no way of unalocating it.what am i missingdoing wrong? im using-using on the streams, readers and crypto stuffs so the framework should shut them all down right? i tryed calling .close and .dispose but nothing ,in fact i moved it all over I have provided the sub that im using for the encrytion im in .net 4.5 so there is a lil async stuff but i know thats not the problem coz i moved this code out of my main app(.net 4) for testing to see if i could fix the problem.[code...]

what i would like is if the passwords do not match in both maskedtextboxes for the system to throw out a message saying passwords do not match please try again..which then clears previous content and requires the user to enter details again. once details are correct and system commits the new user details to the table and throws up a confirmation message.

View 12 RepliesI am working on a project that requires that I use nested case blocks. However, I am not quite sure what this looks like. And for whatever reason I'm having a hell of a time trying to find the answer through google. Are nested case blocks like nested if blocks? Or are they something completely different? More information on the project can be given if needed.

So you know how when you call "Form.ShowDialog" from where ever you call it, it blocks until the form being displayed closes. And then the function returns whatever result it was.I want to know how to block like, but without a form, yet still have the "main ui thread".Basically I have this long process that needs to thread out and do several things... and it's heavily event based. It jumps between two threads, the main ui thread, and it's own background thread. The main ui thread needs to have access so that I can randomly open different dialog boxes for things... sometimes they're just windows asking to hit OK or Cancel to continue, others it's to perform some action, etc etc.
But there is NO central form related to it. It's a complete background thread running that randomly hops over to the main ui thread for things.Right now I have this class I designed called lets say "DoJobProcessor". On it is a function called "BeginDoJob" that threads off from the thread pool... when ever I need to jump back I use a ManualResetEvent to block on the background thread, jump over to to the main thread with "invoke" and passing a reference to the MRE, then release the block when done there and continue on on this background thread.
All while this is going on I just set the form I'm trying to block the main ui thread from managing by just setting its Enabled property false. It all feels just messy and annoying... and I was just writing something using ShowDialog and I was like... HEY, what if I could block this BeginDoJob method, hi-jack the main ui thread, then let that function return the result when done instead of having this "Complete" event with the return value in it. It's obviously possible because ShowDialog does it, but I don't know how.
This way the job I'm performing isn't always waiting for the main ui thread, instead its the other way around... the ui thread waiting for it, the way it aught to be. Show something, branch off do some stuff and just idle the display while it does it, come back show something else, branch off and just idle while it does that.
Im working on a somewhat major program for my work. Just in short, im reading in a text file but i then want it to break the text file into blocks. I will put a quick snip of it here:

i want to create an application for inserting blocks from vb into cad,
i want a form with buttons on, the buttons will have the block names on, when you click
on the buttons the blocks will go into the drawing that is open

What is the convention in VB when a sub requires that a try/catch block succeed in order to function, but the catch block doesn't bubble the exception up?
I could put all of the code into the try block, but this seems messy since most of it doesn't need to be tried, it just needs the try to have succeeded.
For example, should the catch block exit the sub? This would work in my current situation, and if it is the proper procedure, let me know, but what about the more general scenario where both both success and failure require additional processing?
I am using a WebBrowser to load a webpage. In that page, there are several links. When clicking on one, it opens and then immediately closes. IE7's popup blocker is set to allow all from this site, nor does it work even if the popup blocker is completely disabled. I have no other blocker running.
how I can make these windows stay open?
I just did some analysis by using a global function which is called GetCallingMethod in my case.
Mostly it works great. But some cases the application is blocked. It is blocked when closing the application. When going to "pause" in Visual Studio, it stays on the new StackTrace line forever.
In my application I am using third party references, multithreading and several classes. But all that should not be a problem and should not lock the tracer class as far as I imagine. I am using Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate in this case.
This line will never be left in development area. Application will is frozen. Try/Catch will not force the procedure.
I have a windows form that imports data from an xls file to sql2005. I have a browser button, a dropdown list for the sheet names in excel and a process button. Now the excel file has 3 sheets (sheet1, sheet2, sheet3) the columns and data type are not the same so I need 3 different queries to access this file,
I think about CASE, but not very sure,
So if dropdown list.selectedvalue=sheet1 then
