I have a gridview with a dropdown list that was created programmatcially. I want to have access to the selected value and to that row's Id. I have the dropdownlist created in *Gridview_RowDataBound* and I am able to use the text in the cell but my addHandler is never fired. Where do I give it the Add handler. I believe I can assign it the addhandler in RowCreated but how would I be able to set up the add handler if the button is created in rowdatabound?

It fits best in Rowdata bound because my dropdownlist items don't duplicate but I need to be able to use the addhandler I created.

I am limited for space on my form. Is there a way that I can have a textbox act like a dropdown? So the form will show as one line. If the user starts typing multiple lines then it opens the drop down so they can see what they have typed. Will it have all of the same goods as a textbox, like copy and past? When they are not typing then it will be closed and only showing the first line.
View 3 RepliesI have a dropdown list that will add new titles to my database, however I would like to add a textbox that will allow the user to type in a new title if there is nothing in the dropdown that makes any sense for what they are trying to add.
I have the dropdown dynamically getting titles from the database. Unfortunately, this means that the first value in the dropdown list is not a default that says "Select an option." I don't know how to get the dropdown to have the first option listed as "Select" when the values are being pulled from the database. I can't add Select an option to the database so how would this even work?
What can I add to my codebehind that will allow the textbox to insert into the database if the dropdown list is not inserting anything? Right now I don't have any codebehind for the textbox but I do have the dropdown list inserting the correct information.

View 3 RepliesI (think I) want to develop a custom control for my program in VB .net where I type into a textbox and simple search results will then be displayed underneath it (from a predefined set of items). Like auto suggest in google search.I believe the combobox does something similar to this but I think it only works on prefixes.At the moment I have a separate search form from which I use to filter a lot of possibilities and then use drag-and-drop to get the desired item into a TextBox.So ideally I want to combine this with a TextBox into which one can start typing at which point some results will be displayed and a user can select the item they want. (Say, an item from a list of products)

I want to make the users life easy so that when they click inside the combobox and start writing then the text box will start predicting the rest of the text in the combo box. i.e. if i start writing "U" then the textbox will start predicting "UK" as "UK" is already a pre-populated item in the combobox.
How can I restrict the user from selecting only values within the pre-populated items of the combobox. Bearing in mind the combobox allows the user to write inside it (for the benefit of predictive text). But lets say there are values of UK, USA then I dont want the combobox to accept the value of "Ukraine" when the user clicks away from the combobox.

I need to load a large txt file that is in a fixed width format. There are over 45K lines, so speed is important.I need to load one of the fields into a dropdown box and have another field (label) display the text of another field in the related line.I could import the file to an access db if needed, but would rather not as i also want the txt file to update from a link on a regular bases. I have a dropdownlist that is populated by a webservice using the ajax cascading dropdown. I have not been able to set the selected value using javascript. It appears that the values do not exist when the javascript runs. I placed the javascript at the bottom of the aspx page. Here is all of the code and the javascript I have tried.

I'm using VB 2008. I'm looking for a way to take the value of the combobox after the user selects the right one. The combobox is databound and in List mode allowing selection of only the items in the box. I allow autocomplete by setting:
AutoCompleteMode = SuggestAppend
AutoCompleteSource=ListItems
So the user can key in the right value and the value narrows down each time. The user can press enter or just click somewhere else to select the value. I need a way to display the value of the combo after the selection is made but not each time a user presses an additional key to narrow down the selection.

I bind a datatable to the combobox.DataSource on load. I then give the combobox aisplayMember and a ValueMember (2 different columns out of the datatable). In the SelectedIndexChanged of the combobox I would like to use the SelectedValue property of the combobox, just to test I MsgBox(combobox.SelectedValue) and I get "Argument 'Prompt' cannot be converted to type 'String'." Why isn't it displaying the value?
