Types Not Showing Up For Service Reference

May 30, 2012

I'm integrating one of our apps with a third-party provider's web service. I've added the service reference, but when I go to dimension a var as one of their types, the types aren't showing up for me in Intellisense. I'm using VB.NET/VS 2008 on Windows 7 and a 2.0 Framework web site running on local IIS. I have imported System.Web and System.Web.Service in my codebehind. I also made sure to check the "Always generate message contracts" checkbox.Types not showing up for service reference

C# :: Determining Object Equivalence For Value Types, Reference Types And ILists?

Nov 1, 2009

I have a class with a Property called 'Value' which is of type Object.Value can be of any type, a structure, a class, an array, IList etc.My problem is with the setter and determining whether the value has changed or not.This is simple enough for value types, but reference types and lists present a problem.For a class, would you assume that the Equals method has been implemented correctly, or just assume that the value has changed every time the setter is called?If I did assume it's changed, then perhaps I should assume it for value types as well, so that the behaviour is consistent.

Service Reference Stops Working When Make Changes To WCF Service?

May 26, 2011

I'm using Visual Studio 2010 and .NET3.5. I've created a WCF service application. I'm including two DLLs that contain the types I'm returning. The first method I wrote works both in WCF Test Client and also in a console application I created to test. When I move on to the next method that returns a generic list of a type. It works great in WCF Test Client, but when I update the service reference it acts as if the service is unavailable. All my objects say can't find reference, and I can no longer see it in the object browser. It's like it just disappears. I can still see it in the Service Reference folder. If I go back to the WCF app and comment out the contract and implementation of that one method it work again. I created a local class very similar to the class I'm using from the dll, and the it works. Is there something I'm missing here? Can someone point me in the right direction?

WCF Service Sharing Types

Mar 26, 2012

I am writing a WCF service and code to consume it and I want to share data types between these services. I have a WCF library with the types I want to share defined in it. My WCF service and my WCF client both reference the assembly from the library. Classes look like this:[code]Right now when I do this the compiler gives me an error because it cannot implicitly convert type myclientnamespace.MySCF.Myclass to myclientnamespace.MyClass. I have read the posts here and the article here - which was referenced in another stackoverflow thread. These state that if my client code is referencing the same assembly as my service code and I have that assembly reference in before I create the service reference the client code should not create proxy classes and rather use the classes in the referenced entity assembly. I have tried this and it is not working. I even made sure that the "Reuse types in all referenced assemblies" radio button is checked when I create the service reference.can anyone see what I am doing wrong here? Should creating the service reference after the entities assembly reference was made not result in reusing the types?Is it possible to reuse types in this fashion?

Copying Reference Types?

Nov 6, 2011

I understand that an array variable contains a reference to an array object - it is a reference type. A string variable is also a reference type.So, if I make a copy of either one, a change to the copy should also change the result I get when I look at the original because both refer to the same object.

Copying Reference Types And String

So, if I make a copy of either one, a change to the copy should also change the result I get when I look at the original because both refer to the same object. In the following code, I expected to see "Whoooy" as the result for original and copy for both the array and the string. It works with the array but not the string.

Passing Reference Types By Value (ByVal)

Aug 17, 2009

I'm still working on the code in this thread [URL] and as I mentioned in that thread, I thought that passing objects around between methods would probably be bad for performance (perhaps not really noticeably at first but maybe if I did it enough then it could have an impact).

1. When you pass a reference type to a method using ByVal then what is actually 'copied' ? I understand that ByVal copies the object into the local method that you are calling where as ByRef passes a reference to the actual object so you can work with the original object. So when you have a Reference type and you pass this ByVal then does copy the entire object or does it just copy a 'reference' to the object?

2. When working with an object that relates to a 'physical' item, such as a file on disk or a network stream between two connected machines, then what happens when you pass it around between methods (this might be irrelevant depending on the answer to the first question) ? I mean if I have a NetworkStream object that represents the data stream coming from a remote computer, if I then pass that ByVal into another method then does that mean I am still working with the same data stream or a copy of it or what?

VS 2008 - Values And Reference Types

Oct 29, 2011

Reading a book, the following examples are given regarding value and reference types. This example is noted as a value example. ptY display {x = 10, y = 20}

Dim ptX As New System.Drawing.Point(10, 20)
Dim ptY As New System.Drawing.Point
ptY = ptX
ptX.X = 200
Console.WriteLine(ptY.ToString())

This example is noted as a reference example. objY displays "Hello Test".
Dim objX As New System.Text.StringBuilder("Hello World")
Dim objY As System.Text.StringBuilder
objY = objX
objX.Replace("World", "Test")
Console.WriteLine(objY.ToString())

The idea is simple enough, but I just can not tell the difference between the two. Could someone explain how the heap, the stack and the New keyword play a role in accessing directly and indirectly objects and variables?

Structure Hold Small Number Of Reference Types?

Jun 10, 2009

Is it okay for a structure variable to hold a small number of reference types? I thinks it's fine because the pointers themselves are not that big, regardless of what they're pointing to. But I never did fully figure out the whole heap/stack thing, so I'd like to make sure.

Windows Service Not Showing Up When Installed With Setup Project?

Aug 31, 2009

I have a simple windows Service developed in VS.net 2008 and VB.net. When I install the service using Installutil.exe from the command prompt it is working like a charm.

When I try to add a setup project and set the output and build and install it though it says successfully installed, it is not showing up in the services.

The event log shows that it is successfully installed. I just did check the registry, it did place the assemblies in HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftinstallerassemblies.

But I don't understand why it is not showing up in the services listing. I refreshed and restarted.

.net - Service Reference Client Bug?

Aug 16, 2011

i have a WPF application that uses a service reference to a web service.Now i have a GUI component that tracks the progress of this...But i seem to have some sort of bug here, it only occurs on some machines and not often..I start a call with MethodNameAsync and display the progress bar until the matching Completed event occurs.

some times i call 3 different async methods in a row but only the two of them get their Completed event raised so the GUI will be locked and the application has to be restarted.After being totally frustrated a few weeks i found the event AppDomain.CurrentDomain.FirstChanceException, so i hooked up to it and started logging all FirstChanceExceptions..

[Code]...

Fix this temporary by not using async methods and instead using a thread that will call them one by one.. now this is not a elegant solution, i should be able to use the async methods...

WCF Without Adding Service Reference In Vb?

Mar 28, 2012

I'm just a starter in silverlight and WCF. I came across a very good article here by Miguel A. Castro which teaches to add the WCF manually. I have the contract service setup and the only thing I left is to get the data back from the service in the silveright. I have a hard time translate the code to vb.net.

BasicHttpBinding basicHttpBinding = new BasicHttpBinding();
EndpointAddress endpointAddress = new EndpointAddress("/Person.svc");
IPersonService personService = new ChannelFactory<IPersonService>(basicHttpBinding, endpointAddress).CreateChannel();

[code]....

How should that be written in vb.net?

Can't Add Service Reference In VS 2010 To A Net.tcp Endpoint

Metadata contains a reference that cannot be resolved: 'net.tcp://localhost:55555/mex'.

If the service is defined in the current solution, try building the solution and adding the service reference again.The pertinent parts of my config file are:

<netTcpBinding>

openTimeout="00:00:10" receiveTimeout="00:00:30" sendTimeout="00:00:15"

.net - Send HTTP Auth Credentials With A WCF Service Reference

Sep 4, 2009

I'm attempting to consume a HTTP Basic Auth Secured PHP WebService using VB.NET. I've so far managed to get 100% perfect integration by adding it as a Web Reference and doing the following:

Dim Credentials = New System.Net.NetworkCredential("username", "password")
Dim CredentialCache = New System.Net.CredentialCache()
CredentialCache.Add(New Uri(MyWebService.Url), "Basic", Credentials)
MyWebService.Credentials = CredentialCache
MyWebService.PreAuthenticate = True

I can also successfully add the webservice as a 'Service Reference' and this also works fine, as long as i turn off all HTTP authentication on the SOAP server.

My problem is that I can't find any documented means of sending basic HTTP Auth Credentials when using Service References as opposed to 'Web References'

Am I right in my understanding that 'Web References' are a legacy method of Web Service consumption?

Asp.net - Changing "web Reference" To "service Reference" Changes Method Signature

Sep 3, 2010

We have an asp.net 3.5 web application calling a WCF service. Originally the app used a "Web Reference" to register the service however after having some trouble and burning an incident with Microsoft their solution was to replace the "Web Reference" with a "Service Reference" to the WCF service.

This is great except the problem is that when we create a Service Reference, the method signatures are different than they were when a Web Reference was used.

From what I've read this may be expected, however in our case this would mean some significant changes to the application and of course it was due yesterday...so...

...I'm wondering two things:

Is it normal/expected that method signatures will change based on the reference type? Is there a way to create the Service Reference that will generate method signatures identical to the original Web Reference?

.net - WCF Service Hosted In A Managed Windows Service Connect Using A WCF Service Application

i have a Windows service that is hosting a WCF service through net.tcp and this is working great. I have also created a WCF service application. I am trying to add the net.tcp service reference to the service application. Then I add it to the GAC that goes ok but if I try to RegAsm the WCF service application to allow it to be called from Server.CreateObject I get the error:

Warning: Type library exporter encountered a type that derives from a
generic class and is not marked as
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)]. Class interfaces cannot be
exposed for such types. Consider marking the type with
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)] and exposing an explicit
interface as the default interface to COM using the

It does not work. I have tried to call it through a class library but this does not work either as the end point is not set correctly.
