Reference A Control On Parent Form From Child?

Oct 7, 2008

Using MDI in .net, how do you reference a control on a parent form from a child? Like, if on the parent I have a textbox called txtBox1, what could I do from the child form to read the contents? I've been googling unsuccessfully all day. The closest I've found is

Parent!ControlName.Property

I don't know what the ! is supposed to mean, but I get an error here: Class 'System.Windows.Forms.Control' cannot be indexed because it has no default property.

Detect Which Column Is Showing An Editing Control In A Datagridview?

Dec 16, 2009

i have a DataGridView responsible for showing a bit of data and two of my columns allow for user input using comboboxes. The trouble is that one column only needs to show preset values in it's list, but the other needs to both show the presets and allow for the user to enter in their own values.i accomplish this by showing the editing control for the combobox with this bit of code:

Datagridview Not Showing Modified Data By Other Form

Dec 11, 2010

I am creating one application using visual basic.net and sqlce I have two forms name Form1 and Form2.

I used Form1 to add data to database using OLeDb command I used Form2 to show data in datagridview by using dataset[code]...

Form2 Datagridview show the old data only, it do not show the recently added data by form1. I mean when I build my application datagridview show the data which is already in the database, but it does not show the data which is added by the form1 during run time.

Some one suggested me to fill the datagridview at run time by using OLeDB command. Then I created Form3 to fill the datagridview2 by using OLedb command and datareader and found that Form3 shows the recently(added by Form1 at run time) added data.

Single Form With DataGridView Showing Values From Oracle DB

Feb 2, 2010

I have a single form with a datagridview on it showing values from an oracle database. I am trying to set up a way of detecting if the row/column I click on is empty or not, just as a little exercise. I have so far got this:

Private Sub DataGridView1_CellClick(ByVal sender As Object, _
ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.DataGridViewCellEventArgs) _
Handles DataGridView1.CellClick
Dim c, r As Integer
c = e.ColumnIndex
r = e.RowIndex
[Code] .....

The message going into lbl2 shows the co-ordinate values of any box I click in but as you can see with the IF statement below I am trying to see if the system can detect whenever I click in a value that is empty (null or ''). When I run my form and populate the list with a column of names I can click in 0, 0 cell and I get a message saying the 'Box is not empty' as above.

But when I click in any of the next boxes e.g. (1,0) (2,0) etc I get this:
'Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection.
Parameter name: index'

Pointing to this line of
If Not DataGridView1.Item(r, c).Value Is Nothing Then
Not sure what this means at all. I am under the impression that my piece of code is gathering the value of the item depending on the co-ordinate values. so why should this fail? What index/collection is VB talking about?

RTB Control On A Form Showing Rich Text?

i have a RTB control on a form showing rich text

At the top of the RTB i have a toolstrip with bold, italic, and underline buttons - these work just fine. However i need to add some color buttons, i dont need a color picker since i only need 3 colors - Black, Blue, Red. So i added some buttons for these, however i cant get the buttons to work... my syntax is wrong. I also dont want the color buttons to remove any other formatting from text (like bold, underline, etc) - i achieved this for the other buttons like so:

Private Sub BoldButton_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles BoldButton.Click
NotesBox.SelectionFont = New Font(NotesBox.SelectionFont,

Asp.net - Setting Control Text In Parent Form From Modal Popup

Mar 28, 2012

I have a problem I am trying to set the parent textbox from the modal popup.

Although I found the control from the modal popup with the below code
DirectCast(Parent.Page.Form.FindControl("ContentPlaceHolder1").FindControl("myAccordion").FindControl("txtTo"), TextBox).Text = str

This is being called on button click when the user has finished selecting from the Checkboxlist.

When the parent page is shown again though the textbox is empty.

The scenario of my user control is that a user is to select from a checkbox list which is a list of emails.

When done has been clicked then it is required that the selected emails be forwarded to the parent webpage.

Then the To Textbox in this case will be filled with the emails that the user has selected.

VS 2010 - Reference DataGridView From Another Form?

Aug 29, 2011

I wrote a routine using a DatagridView that I dragged/dropped from the toolbar--populate it with data and it works great! Now, I need to reference the datagridview from another form. So, I (hopefully, naively, after the fact) declare a Public dgv in a module with the same name as the dgv in the form I'm trying to reference--in the form itself, dgv.rows.count = some number, but when I reference it outside the form I get errors. Obviously my public declaration is not working as hoped--the dgv was working within its form without the declaration so SOMEWHERE it is declared and is not public, but since I dragged/dropped it (i.e. did not instantiate in code).

Readonly Reference To Parent/collection?

Feb 22, 2011

When it comes to creating trees or collections, sometimes I want child elements to have a reference to the parent. Obviously it is important that the parent and child references to each other remain in sync. It seems natural to have code in the parent "addchild" and "removechild" methods that updates the child's parent reference.t also, the reference to the parent should probably be readonly, so it can only be changed at the appropriate time. Two examples in .Net that I've seen are the TreeNode and datagridview controls

Order Of Creation Or Adding To The Parent Control Determines Whether Or Not A Control's Dock Property Supersedes Another's

Bind Property Of User Control To One Of The Parent Control's Fields?

Dec 30, 2011

If I need access to the value of a user control's property BEFORE PreRender, would I need to base the custom control off of one of the preexisting data controls (repeater, listview, etc.)?One of my user controls features a gridview control that is configured based on the user control's properties on which it resides. Several of the key properties alter the SQL Statement for the underlying recordsource. I'm now in a situation where the property that sets the WHERE statement for the SQL Statement needs to tied to a value in the user control's parent FormView. Think of the formview as displaying a customer detail record. The user control takes the customer's account number and then displays data from a related table such as Customer Contact Names. Since the gridview is created before the control's prerender event, working within the prerender event doesn't seem efficient.

Dispose Of Each Child Control Before Disposing Of Parent Control?

May 22, 2010

I am using Visual Basic .Net 2005 professional. From what I understand, I should be disposing of any object that is an unmanaged resource. I understand the best way to tell if a resource is unmanaged is if it has a Dispose method. ie: If I type a dot after my object, intellisense shows .Dispose() as one of the options. If it does, it's an unmanaged resource. Is that correct? In that case, pretty much every control is an unmanaged resource: buttons, forms, panels, etc.In the application I am working on I use an MDIparent container form, which contains MDI children forms, which themselves contain Panels, Menus, Groupboxes, etc, which in turn contain Buttons, Textboxes, Labels, Dropdowns, etc.Do I have to dispose of each button, textbox, label and dropdown within a panel before disposing of the panel?

Do I have to dispose of each panel, menu, and groupbox before disposing of the MDI child form?.Or can I just call the Dispose() method of the MDIchild form and the GarbageCollector will take care of all the controls and resources within the form?Watching the "mem usage" in Windows Task Manager seems to be an unreliable way to detect if I have a memory leak. The numbers just keep climbing and falling (mostly climbing) erratically and without any activity performed on the application. Is there some (relatively) easy way to detect leaks?

Open Form Based On Value (inside Column) In DataGridView Control

Jun 9, 2011

I am developing a software using microsoft visual studio basic 2010. I used a datagridview control to display a list of data from product table. What I want to do (actually I am not sure how to do it, or is there a way to do it), when I choose one of the value in one of the column inside the table, I want it to open a form that contain data(details) based on that value.
How to do it? How to call the value that I pressed, so it can be used to open a new form containing the details of that value

Example of the data: (the "system" column) SYSTEM
topaz
nex1300
Nec
If I pressed "topaz" system, it will prompt me to a new form containing the details of that "topaz" system.
