I have a textbox and a datagrid. I am trying to enter a last name into the textbox and have that return the entire record from that last name into the datagrid from an oracle database. The code below currently returns all records in the table and is not searching by the last name. Public Class Form1
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim myString As String

I have some code in a VB module. When I run this with the SQL statement having hard coded values in the where statement it works. I am now trying to add Parameters to the module so that the Form can except an Input from a user, but I am getting the message: Input string was not in a correct format.
Here is the section of code:
objCon.Open()
objCmd.Connection = objCon
objCmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text
objCmd.CommandText = sSQL
[Code] .....
Like I said, if I substitute the Parameters for fixed values it all works.

So my idea is to have (in my VB.net project) a string that could dynamically change the stored procedure "Future"
I just started in VB, I have created select...case statement to do some input validation.
Everything apart from the works. Its an extended ASCII character, can this be the cause?

I need to take user input, validate to ensure there's no negative numbers and display monthly fee and check fee in a Label.....with a calculate button_Click
To create a program that asks for input then uses an else statement to create a handling fee balance.
Input: sales record - first name, last name, purchase amount, balance before purchase
Output: report - full name, old balance, purchase amount, handling fee, new balance
Definitions: handling fee is 5% of the old balance if the old balance is less than $1000.00 else it is 2% new balance = old balance + purchase + handling fee
Processing:
Ask for and receive sales information
Calculate new balance
Print output report
End the program when a purchase amount of 9999.99 is entered

I need some help with the input validation of my application. Attached is the code that I have written as well as a screenshot of the front end. I specifically need input validation to verify that the user selected input for cbLengthOfStay is a number between 1-10 as well as input validation to verify the user input for txtMedication, txtSurgicalCharges, txtLabFees and txtRehabilitation is a positive numerical number. Please feel free to critique my attached code. [Code]
View 2 RepliesIf my Category and Forum selection is incorrect I am sorry and feel free to move it. I'd like to have the users input in the message box that will show. For example: There is a textbox and the user puts in their name as Bob. Then the message box would be: What my main goal is, is being able to include the users input they type inside the textbox inside the message box.
View 6 RepliesI was convinced that If <expression> Then <statement [:statement]> Else [statements] in concrete form of If a = b Then SayHello() Else SayBye() End has sense. I read article on msdn on If-then-else, but I forgot why I was reading, so I concluded, that snippet above means this
If a = b Then HelloIsSaid : IsNotEnded Else ByeIsSaid : IsEnded But I have tested it now, and I see, that Else without statement is nothing more than decoration. It would be pretty good if it had function I described. Do you think its good request? Or do you know any circumstance where this Else has some function?

I am writing a calculator app in VB Express 2008. I'm trying to get the app to accept numeric and operator input while ignoring all the alpha input. In other words taking input from the numeric keypad and the top of the keyboard and ignoring all the letters.
Here's the block of code I have so far:
Private Sub TextBox1_KeyDown(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyEventArgs) Handles TextBox1.KeyDown
If (e.KeyCode >= Keys.D0 OrElse e.KeyCode >= Keys.NumPad0) And (e.KeyCode <= Keys.D9 OrElse e.KeyCode <= Keys.NumPad9) Then
Select Case e.KeyCode

I can't get vb to recognize the above code it seems to skip right over it. BTW, is 'Keys.Crsel' the same as the caret '^' symbol?
On geting input into DataGridViewTextBoxColumn but the column should not accept input of data that is not integer like; 10003, 2.00, 1500.00
View 3 RepliesMy objective is to, instead of entering in the data manually into the text boxes, I want to read in a textfile. The Calculate button will contain the code to read in the file and assign it to the appropriate textboxes. Save the separate file in the \bin\Debug folder.
The text file just needs to have 3 integers on 3 separate lines.The code I posted works without and errors, but.I am having some trouble integrating the Stream Reader.

I cannot figure out how to incorporate the number of days into the input box then get it to loop and count the number of times the User inputs in the number of days. Then I have to incorporate it into the equation to get the total distance D = MPH * Hours. What I have right now wil not count up the number of days and locks up after I input one number and will not add anything to the listbox. Because I also have to make sure that they cant add nonnumaric values and the number of hours per day cannot exceed 20. I have put things in and taken them out but it has been 2 days and I am lost now

View 3 RepliesI'm writing something that will examine a function and rewrite that function in another language so basically if inside my function F1, i have this line of code var x=a.b(1) how do i break up the function body into symbols or "tokens"?I've searched around and thought that stuff in System.Reflection.MethodInfo.GetMethodBody would do the trick however that class doesn't seem to be able to have the capabilities to do what i want..dit 2:basically what I'm trying to do is to write a program in c#/vb and when i hit F5 a serializer function will (use reflection and) take the entire program (all the classes in that program) and serialize it into a single javascript file. of course javascript doesn't have the .net library so basically the C#/VB program will limit its use of classes to the .js library (which is a library written in c#/vb emulating the framework of javascript objects)
View 4 RepliesPart of my assignment is to check if input to Group Number and Number of Units are correct input by making error handling exceptions...
I have to check the following:
a) group number is neither 501 nor 062
b) number of units are NOT numbers
c) number of units is NOT a positive number
So my first question is, am I checking correctly? 2nd question is, How do I make sure my Exceptions will pertain to their correct respective things (a, b, and c.. above)?

I've been working on some code to add together input from an input box to make a string and display it in a message box. I've put the code in a loop so that it will add all input into the string until nothing is entered in the input box.
Dim stringInput As String
Dim message As String
Do Until stringInput = String.Empty
[Code].....
All I get is just the last input entered to show up in the message box and none of the previous entries. How do I get all the input to be added together and show up in the message box?
how to use them then before, but am still a little confused with a few aspects. Here goes:
1.) Lets say you have a method that checks for a certain condition(s) and if it fails Throws an exception. Does it have to be in a try/catch block? Meaning can the "Throw" statement exist in a block with no try/catch statement?
2.) Now lets say we have a method that has a try catch block and in it there is a throw statement. When the throw statement is executed does it first try to find an appropriate catch block in the same method or does it immediately go back to the calling method without looking at the catch statements in the current method where the exception was thrown?
3.) I created a custom exception class that inherits from ApplicationException. Next I created a method which has a catch block that catches this type of exception and does some action. Is the System(i.e CLR) smart enough to throw an exception of this type, or does it only throw exceptions from SystemException?
4.) I know that some people are more liberal in their use of exceptions and others use it more sparingly when truly strange stuff happen like the DB going down. I am writing code where I am getting some info back from the database, converting it and then storing it. Sometimes there might be data that comes back from the database and other times the field is empty and the Null value comes back. Therefore in the instances where Null comes back from the database I should not convert the value to anything, since I will get an error. What should I do in this situation? Should I let the CLR throw the exception when it goes to convert the Null value or should I check for the Null value and if it exists not convert?
5.) In general when I throw exceptions, is it sensible to only throw exceptions of the type Application Exception or are there instances where the programmer throws exceptions of the type SystemException?
I'm building a listview search feature in my app. (See the code below). It works really well, except if you search "T" then the code removes all items, if you search "t" then it removes every item except for those starting with "t". Is there any way to make a 'like' statement, or use some kind of wildcard to make the statement not case sensitive?

If itm.Text Like TextBox1.Text & "*" Or itm.SubItems.Item(1).Text Like TextBox1.Text & "*" Then
