I want to create a simple program that runs in the background that every few minutes checks to see if any additions to the "startup folders and or the registry entries that run programs. How do I make the value of these folders or registry entries variables?

Now I need to check if that CompanyName Folder is deleted or not and display a message.

I want to save a bitmap object to file, but I want to make sure the file path is writeable first. The user should have write permissions to the folder and it should not be a location on a CD drive.Right now, it gives a "A generic error occurred in GDI+", which is not too helpful. I'd rather tell the user that the selected save location is not writeable.

View 2 Repliesbuilding a program at the moment that changes registry entries to turn on and change, and off proxy settings. This small program is going to be dropped on each persons desktop so they can easily turn on the proxy in work, and turn it off when they take their laptop home.
However, the proxy address changes depending on which company I am at. I would like to be able to make a single program, but have a "hidden" setting to change the proxy and store it in the program, and push a copy of the file out across the network to each machine. I tried to make it so the proxy address can be saved as a string in My.Settings, but it would have to be made as a User setting rather than an application setting to give it read-write access.The only other option I can think of is to hard-code the proxy address into the program, which really isn't ideal

View 8 RepliesI have a program where you have three entries, CD name, artist, price and it goes into a listbox and .txt file when closing. I have to have a message box if you enter the same CD name. I have a code to open the .txt file and compare strings but I need to change it to compare only the CD name and not all three entries. Is there a way to do my string compare against my listbox without opening the .txt file?? The program loads the listbox from the .txt file when opening. I want to set a certain column to true or false automatically based on what value another column has entered. I managed to get this working by myself using the 'SQL Pane' in VB and testing it by using execute sql but I don't know what to do now. I assumed that I could just save it and it would work from there but that's not the case, it dissapears from the SQL Pane if I close the project (even though it worked fine when I ran the project the first time), so where do I put it/what do I do with it in order to get this to work?

The only two ways I can see how to do this is to either create an invisible folder to hold the files, or make my own extension. I think it would be easier to create an invisible folder through VB if possible. Can anyone point me in the right direction.

I am trying to add a registry key in to the file "MyApp" which doesn't yet exist in the registry key directory, when I try and write this key however I get an error from the debug console telling me the "NullReference was unhanded". If I go and manually make this folder it works brilliantly, I thought that this code would make the folder as well?

If it does, do nothing, if it doesn't, recreate it.I've found numerous resources on the subject, and have made progress, but one little thing is stoping me.[code]The problem is that this reports "Not Found", even though the key 'regkey' exists in the registry. Also, if I remove 'regkey' from the code, it reports "Found". So it does find the subdirectory in the registry.My question is, how do I check to see if the 'regkey' exists? Besides the standard My.Computer.Registry.GetValue(), this page mentions using "Imports Microsoft.Win32" followed by "registryKey.OpenSubKey" to check that a subkey exists, but is there a way to check that node exists?

here is code that i have for checking an empty registry value for instance a registry value named run. So if the key RUN has no value it returns true on the checkbox. Im not sure how to modify this code to check for an entire subkey as there is other subkeys where the one above is contained.

View 5 RepliesI'm having trouble getting my app to auto-start by adding a registry key. The problem it is having is checking if the user has admin privileges. I tried setting the thread principal, because before it would always return false when I tried My.User.IsAuthenticated, but when I check if My.User.IsInRole("Administrators"), it still returns false, even when it should return true.Here's my current code. This worked fine without even setting the thread principal when I was just creating a regular Windows Form.
