Use Reflection To Get A Properties Property?

View 1 RepliesI searched on the forum / Internet for the solution how a PropetryInfo object (of a Public property) can reveal if it has a Private Protected Setter ... it was all in vain .... all help I found was about how to "Set" value of a public property having a Private Setter.I would like to know if I have a PropertyInfo object of a public property, how would I know if its Setter is Non Public?
I tried, in a exception handling block, where I did a GetValue of the PropertyInfo object and then called SetValue by setting the same value back... but to my surprise it worked well and didn error out.

I have a self-generated code in one assembly which in some of the lines includes properties, I was wondering how can I retrieve them? Especially when that class is a view object and does not contain any parameters so we can do it by data adapter and finding for example insert or update parameter.
View 1 Replieshow to create an instance of a class then add properties to the class, set those properties, then read them later. I don't have any code as i don't even know how to start going about this. C# or VB is fine.
My system has a dynamic form creator. one of my associates requires that the form data be accessible via web service. My idea was to create a class (based on the dynamic form) add properties to the class (based on the forms fields) set those properties (based on the values input for those fields) then return the class in the web service.
additionally, the web service will be able to set the properties in the class and eventually commit those changes to the db.
I am creating a dynamic clone method to be used in my custom classes. I want the clone function to be completely generic, so I do not have to make any changes when I add new properties to the class. I am having an issue with regards to making a deep copy a property that is a List. sample code that will enable me to identify with reflection that a property of my class is a List, and then more importantly the code to loop through the the List elements and copy of each of them. I have been able to identify a property as a List by using the NameSpace of the property type, but I'm not a big fan of that method. Either way, I have yet been able to dynamically loop and deep copy the elements of the property that's a List using reflection.
View 2 RepliesI am able to use these COM objects but i do not want to due to several problems of binary compatibility on 3rd party software upgrades. So my only option was to use reflection since late binding won't work.I have several Interops and each one of them has several Classes, i do own the dlls structure, classes and methods names and definition but i am not able to use these with reflection due to my inexperience in this field.[code]
View 7 RepliesOn my Bussiness Layer, I have something like
Dim object as New ExampleObject
Where ExampleObject inherits BaseExampleObject.I want to know how can I access ExampleObject Properties by reflection on my BaseExampleObject.
Something like:
MyBase.GetType.GetProperty("PropertyName").GetValue(mybase.gettype, Nothing)
Of course thats not going to work because this is not an instance of an object and if I instantiate a new object, I'll lose the reference from my Bussiness Layer.
I am currently using reflection to retrieve all properties of a class. I return a collection of PropertyInfo objects and all is working fine.
My problem is, I want to check if a property has been defined in a base class implementation and is therefore inherited in the current class.
I have a very simple setup, single mycontrol.ascx with assoicated mycontrol.ascx.designer.vb and mycontrol.ascx.vb file.
mycontrol.ascx embeds a single reference to a custom control: "MyMenu":
<mM:myMenu id="myMenu1" runat="server" />
This has created a protected reference in the mycontrol.ascx.designer.vb file:
Protected WithEvents myMenu1 As Global.CustomControls.MyMenu
Now, when I breakpoint the Page_Load() event of mycontrol.ascx, and inspect the members returned from the type via:
Me.GetType().GetMembers()
I cannot any reference to myMenu1. If I look at the control with intellisence, the property is accessible:
Me.myMenu1
what I'm missing and what I need to do to access designer created properties at runtime through reflection?
I have a main form, a separate plugin interface dll and another separate dll. Now this is my problem:I'd like to access the properties of the controls of the main form for manipulation in the other dll.
Example:
MainForm
Plugins.dll
Data.dll
Main form have label control I define properties in the interface Plugins.dll from Data.dll I load Plugins to read the label control from the mainform.The question is how can I do that?
I'm trying to make a very simple audio tag editor. The idea is that the user can select as many audio files as he likes from a ListView, and a PropertyGrid will then display their tags + their values.When multiple files are selected, I want the property grid to display the values of the tags that all files have in common, and display empty values for tags that the files do not have in common.As an example, look at the properties list in your Visual Studio IDE when you select multiple controls (of the same type for this matter). Select a few Button controls, for example, and notice that the properties whose values are the same (often things like Font, ForeColor, etc) are displayed. Also notice that the values for properties that are not the same (Text, Name, etc) are empty.
View 17 RepliesI'm trying to obtain the values using the prospective GetValue(s) methods but I don't understand the syntax of the documentation. I'm sending the correct bindings (I believe) to filter the fields, and properties that i'm interested in usually

I'm working on a Hazardous Materials label printing program. One of the options is to do an "NFPA" label. Since there are 4 values required with 4 or 6 options, the ratings are entered via radio buttons in a group box. That's working okay. I display values in the NFPA diamond as they're entered: left quadrant blue, top quadrant red, left yellow, bottom red. I'm having trouble with the label in which the rating will be displayed on top of a jpg diamond for the white. In this quadrant the text can be up to 4 characters. I can accept the text going into an adjacent block a little, but the corners of the label overlap into another quadrant/color. I reduced the font size which solved the overlap problem but the font is then too small and looks terrible. I tried to make the background of the label transparent to let the color come through correctly but that's not a valid value for label.background. I'm figuring that the transparent background is the best solution. What can I use that will accept a transparent background so the color shows through?
I'm trying to set the transparent property via label properties properties, not via code. Here's the code if it makes any difference:
Public Class NFPA
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Close()
End Sub

I know its unlikely but I was wondering if there is any way to get the comments (i.e. the bits after the ''') of a class or property..? I have managed to get a list of properties of a class using the PropertyInfo class but I cant find a way to get the comments / description.. I need it for a guide I am writing for the administrators of my site - it would be great if it could automatically update if new properties are added, so there is no need to worry about updating it in the future too much.
View 5 RepliesI am retrieving several properties of a control. Here is how I used to retrieve properties (with pinfo of type PropertyInfo):
value = pinfo.GetValue(obj, nothing)
That worked well, but now I am facing a property that has a optional value, and I get an error message telling me that the number of parameters is incorrect. So I changed my code by this one:
Dim index As Object() = {Nothing}
value = pinfo.GetValue(obj, index)
At this point, I didn't get any error message, but this code doesn't retrieve the good value. It only works if I replace Nothing by the default value provided by the property accessor...
But I don't know in advance what this default value is! And this code is within a function that retrieves properties that doesn't have optional values, so I cannot change the code especially for one case or another..
I am working on .NET 2.0
EDIT: More precisions about the case leading to the problem
Here is an example of property leading to the problem:
ReadOnly Property Foo(Optional ByVal Number As Integer = -1) As String
Get
If Number = -1 Then
[Code]....
With this kind of property, none of the codes above retrieve the good string.
My best guess would be to try the first code for general purposes, catch the appropriate exception, and then dynamically retrieve the default value of the parameter (Number in that case) and its type, so that I can call getValue with this default value.
So, How can I retrieve the default value of the optional parameter?
How to get the object description using reflection. I can get the name, value, etc... but not the decription like in .net.For example the description for .Text is "Gets or sets the text associated with this control." I thought maybe using MethodInfo, but does not give the description.
Dim MethodObj As MethodInfo
Console.WriteLine("Methods:")
For Each MethodObj In GetType(TextBox).GetMethods()
Debug.Print(MethodObj.Name & " " & MethodObj.ReturnType.ToString())
Next
When I got a fieldsinfo-array of a class I know all of it's fields. Now, how can I access all of the fields of an instance of the same class by using the fieldsinfo-array? [code]I'm sure there exists a possiblity to get the value of the instance, but how?
View 5 RepliesI wonder if anyone can help me - I've not done much with reflection but understand the basic principles.What I'm trying to do:I'm in the process of developing a class that gathers a lot of information about the local system, network, etc... to be used for automated bug reporting. Instead of having to change my test harness every time I add a new property, I'd (ideally) like to be able to serialise the lot as an XML string and just display that in a textbox.
Unfortunately, the Framework won't use the default XML serializer on read-only properties (which almost all of mine are) as they wouldn't deserialize properly [Not sure I agree with the assumption that anything serialized must be de-serializable - MS says this is a feature "by design" which I suppose I can understand - Perhaps a tag to indicate that it should be serialized anyway would be advantageous?]
The initial approach was to make properties gettable and settable (with a throw exception on the setter) but the amount of work tidying this up afterwards seems a little excessive and I would want the properties to be read-only in the final version.What I need help with:My current plan is to use reflection to recursively iterate through each (public) property of my topmost gathering class. The problem is, the samples I've seen don't handle things recursively. Additionally, I only want to inspect an object's properties if it's in one of my assemblies - Otherwise just call .ToString on it.
If I don't have the inspection limited to my assembly, I assume I'll get (say) a string which then contains a Length which in turn will have .Tostring method.For the purposes of this project, I can almost guarantee no circular references within my code and as this will only be used as a development tool so I'm not too concerned about it running amok now and then.
Is there a way for a property to access its own name and type at runtime using reflection? I want to access this info without hard coding the name or index of the property in the class.
Simple Example Code:
Private ReadOnly Property MyProperyName() As String
Get
Console.WriteLine((Get Current Property Info).Type.ToString)
Console.WriteLine((Get Current Property Info).Name)
[code]....
This function loops all properties of an object to create the updatequery to save te object to the DB.
We had to make some changes to it because of the introduction of nullable properties. If the property is nullable we would like to check the 'HasValue' property. This does works when it has a value. When the property has no value we get an 'Non-static method requires a target'-error at the CBool-line
An other way to check the 'HasValue'-prop of a property using reflection?
Private Function GetUpdateQuery(ByVal obj As Object, ByRef params As List(Of SqlParameter), Optional ByVal excl As String() = Nothing) As String
Dim sql As String = String.Empty
[Code].....
I've reviewed the links that were offered and don't find an answer. Neither has a lot of searching helped, probably because I can't think of a reasonably short way to ask the question. I hope that I've at least found the proper forum and category.
In my VB 2010 code, I've defined a structure that has about 30 elements. I want to sum the properties (they are all singles) of two members of the corresponding collection. I understand that I can do something like:
member1.property1=member2.property1+member 3.property1 for the entire set of properties of member2 and member3 to produce a completely defined member1 What I wonder is whether or not there is a way that uses fewer lines of code - I know that I can't do:member1=member2+member3, for example.
I was trying to access the following property using Reflection because I don't have the original source code (suppose this was decompiled through Reflector). It seems that something is special about it being "private virtual" or maybe because it has "_" in the beginning of the property. I can access all the other private properties no problem except this one. Just can't figure out what I am doing wrong:
private virtual String _MyProperty
{
get

I'm looping all the properties in an object via reflection:
For Each p As PropertyInfo In values.[GetType]().GetProperties()
If p.CanRead Then
'Do stuff
End If
Next
how to determine whether the property in question is a generic List(Of T)? If it is I need to loop the list itself.
I've experimented with GetType and TypeOf but have not managed to get anything working.
To clarify, I want to keep this generic. I do not want to specify the type of T, I need to loop the list items and call the ToString method on each item. T could be one of a number of different types (application specific reference types). Is it possible to do this without specifying types?
(VB.NET 2005 with .Net 2.0)
I'm a C# coder, and I have trouble even reading VB.NET, so please forgive what may turn out to be an incredibly dumb question. But I have some code which looks like this:
CODE:
So, ignoring the fact that the syntax is probably wrong - how does VB.NET get the Name property from sourceObject? Inspecting it at run-time reveals that sourceObject is of a type that supports a property called Name with a getter, but what does VB.NET do in this case? Is there some extra code that is being generated by the compiler to somehow cast this automagically at run-time?
i have read on the msdn and know properties statement used for declaring the name of a property, and the property procedures used to store and retrieve the value of the property.i learned about structure of it. but i cant figure out it clearly. [code]
View 3 RepliesI'm faced with a couple of problems in VB.net: I have a series of objects, which properties I'm displaying in a grid for the user to edit. My first problem is: how do I get a list of all the properties of an object? Is it even possible? The datagrid control that I'm using accepts string values with the name of the property as parameters, but inserting them manually would be a real problem, because there are a LOT of them. So: is there a way to get a list of strings with the name of each property of an object?
If that's possible, here comes the second question: Now, of course, since users are editing the properties, I'm not interested in showing ReadOnly properties which they cannot edit. Hence my secodn problem: is there a way to check if a property is readonly at runtime?
It is possible to override textbox properties like selectionstart property

Does case 1 and case 2 yield same result, I mean is a private value necessarily in there?, can we use property itself to use its own value in its Set and get statements?
