Use The App.config File With A Test Project?

Dec 7, 2009

I using unit testing, to ensure that I can read connect string information from the ConnectStrings section of my app.config file. This works fine in the application proper, However when I attempt to generate a unit test for this under the Test Project, the dll.config file is being ignored, and the connectstring info from the machine.config file is being retrieved instead. How do I ensure that my tests read from the correct config file?

Class Library Project With A Config File?

Jan 19, 2012

I have a Class Library project with a appSettings.config file included into the project. The file is not embedded. So I have a ClassLibrary.dll with a appSettings.config beside in the bin.I have another project which is a Web Service. It has a reference on ClassLibrary.dll with a Copy Local=true. When I build the Web Service, the ClassLibrary.dll is brought into the bin of the Web Service. However, the .config doesn't follow.Do I need to do some postbuild event to copy the .config file or there is another setting I can set?

VS2003.Net Project To Read XML .config File And Modify?

Mar 26, 2009

Dear Friends: I have some files in 1 folder directory that show "XML Configuration File" under type. But none of these files show the extension .config. The directory filesare like C0150,C0150_new,C0200,C0200_new etc. I need to change only 1 attribute of each of these files. I need to write a VS.Net project to do this. I have to send the .exe file(from bin directory of this VS.Net project) to my client and they will just double click the .exe file and it will change that attribute in all the .config files.

The C0150 file looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<configuration>

Sql Server - Test Function In MVC Project?

Jul 27, 2010

So I want to test one of my Functions in my Web Project, but it's not actually connected to anything in the project yet (someone else is working on that part). The Function takes in an "ID" field, goes off and does some queries and gets some data, performs some calculations on it, and then writes a bunch of lines to a FileStream and returns that stream. I pretty much just want to test it by having it write the file to my own computer locally, and working with that file directory after the Function completes.

So my question is mainly:

1) How do I call this Function just for testing purposes so I can test all the queries/calculations/File writes, etc without it being connected to another part of the application just yet.

2) How can I change the 'Return fs' for the FileStream to write to my own computer locally to view the file that has been written.

Is the class library project's app.config or project structure behave in a different way?

VS 2010 Array - Small Report Card Project - Pull 5 Students With Each Student Having 5 Test Scores A Piece

Jan 13, 2012

I'm basically trying to do a small report card project. I only need to pull 5 Students with each student having 5 Test Scores a piece. The full Code of what I have for the submit button is below. I have actually 3 questions.

1. I always seem to have trouble with them unless I initialize them when I dim them. Is there a better way than below

2. The below code works really well for Student 1 and all 5 test scores. Rather than do that code 5 times though, what is the best way for me to basically state that IF dblStudent1(intMax) = 4 Then Change dblStudent1(intMax) to dblStudent2(intMax) etc.

3. Would this be better suited towards a multidimensional array ?

Private Sub btnEnterGrades_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnEnterGrades.Click

Dim strStudentNames() As String = {" ", " ", " ", " ", " "} ' Holds the 5 Students Names
Dim intMax As Integer = (4) ' Place Holder for Student Number

VS 2008 - My.Settings File - Specify The Location For User.config File

Jan 3, 2010

I'm looking for a way to specify the location for the User.config file that is used for storing the My.Settings object. It appears that this is not possible. The problem for me is, I don't want to be responsible for creating several different files on the users computer that really have no use and are difficult to find and clean once an update is released. For most users, this is not a serious problem, as many will probably never update the software, and most will probably only go through a couple of updates. On my system, there are config files for every build of the application, and the same to a lesser extent will be true for my beta testers.

I can understand that MS wants to make sure that no two applications will use the same location for storing application data, but a simple [UserData] [CompanyName][ApplicationName] for storing application data will probably suffice for 99.9999 percent of the legitimate applications in the world. Bogging a user's system down with erroneous files, no matter how small, is an unnecessary drain on system resources and a potential source of problems for the user. It's bad enough that most programs leave bits and pieces of themselves all over a user's system after De-installation - this to me seems only to exaggerate this problem.

Is the only way to get around this problem to write a whole new Settings Class? Is there a way to change the location of the UserConfig file to a more friendly (and more predictable) location that I am not finding for myself? It would seem that having at least the OPTION to specify a location for the User.Config file would be OBVIOUS and easy to implement, so why did they leave this out?

Make Application 'single File' And Get Rid Of XML Config File?

Dec 29, 2010

I have this pretty simple application, it uses a webService to transfer data to my servers DataBase. Now it is very important for me to keep this application as one single file, and not having some XML files needed for it to work, but this is the case. I think the XML file holds the information to this webService, so without it the application crashes. Is there a way to get the application to work without this XML file, or a way to put the XML inside the exe archive?
