Using String Variable To Build Message

Feb 11, 2010

I'm using a string variable to build a 'message' which is sent by mail, and I use vbCrlf in my string to seperate the lines.

Example:
For Each ...
strMsg = strMsg & strAddMe & vbCrLf
Next

This 'method' is used several places in my code. When I look at the results some parts of the message are missing the vbCrlf it seems.

Example:
Here's the current status of today:
New items : 12
Updated items : 12 Deleted Items 11

Variable Serial Port Message

Jan 22, 2011

I have a device that sends messages to the serial port. The problem is that the message length varies based on the data in the message. Also, there is no control character at the end of the message so I dont know when the end has been reached. If this data is streaming in, one message after another, how would I go about breaking up each message? The first three bytes should always be the same, but they could also occur somewhere else so I am somewhat reluctant to use those as fixed sync bytes.[code]

Use CType To Change An Object Variable "obj" To Custom Class That Reference Using A String Variable Like Obj.GetType.Name?

Feb 9, 2011

The code below works for the class that I hard coded "XCCustomers" in my RetrieveIDandName method where I use CType. However, I would like to be able to pass in various classes and property names to get the integer and string LIST returned. For example, in my code below, I would like to also pass in "XCEmployees" to my RetrieveIDandName method. I feel so close... I was hoping someone knew how to use CType where I can pass in the class name as a string variable.

Note, all the other examples I have seen and tried fail because we are using Option Strict On which disallows late binding. That is why I need to use CType.I also studied the "Activator.CreateInstance" code examples to try to get the class reference instance by string name but I was unable to get CType to work with that. When I use obj.GetType.Name or obj.GetType.FullName in place of the "XCCustomers" in CType(obj, XCCustomers)(i)I get the error "Type 'obj.GetType.Name' is not defined" or "Type 'obj.GetType.FullName' is not defined"

Build Failing When Adding A String, No Visible Errors

Mar 14, 2011

After adding a string to the program from the resources the build always fails, and removing the string and the code to load the string does not solve the problem, as the build still fails. We've been using multiple versions of the program since this started happening with the most updated one, and adding the string is what started the failure in building even though we added other elements (like an exit button) and other forms without it failing. With the one that started with the build failures we've tried it on all types of computers and it does not manage to build on any of them, even one's with a new installation of Visual Basic Express 2010.

The exact line added that apparently makes the build fail is:

PictureAndInfo.infoBox.Text = My.Resources.StegmeierBreweryString

And the string added to the Resources isn't anything unusal compared ot the rest we have but it is this is:

The Stegmaier Brewery business began in 1857 when Charles Stegmaier first set up a shop. Since then the Stegmaier business has grown greatly. The size of their operation has grown from the original shop to the large building pictured to the left (opened in 1863 and purchased from Stegmaier in 1978). The Stegmaier Brewery Company was purchased in 1974 by Lion, Inc. and Stegmaier Beer is still produced today by Lion, Inc. and remains a popular choice among consumers.

Sorting - Sort List(of String()) Using A Variable Index Into String() As Key ?

May 30, 2012

I have a List(of String()). I have written a custom comparer (implements IComparer(of string)) to do an alphanumeric sort.Is there a way to sort the List using a given index to determine which position in the String() to sort by? In other words one time I might sort by Index = 0 and another time by Index = 3. The length of all String() in the list is the same. For reference this question is similar to Sort List<String[]> except I am using VB.net and that question is hardwired to Index=0.

EDIT from OP's comments:I started simple with the non custom comparer but I am getting an error: expression does not produce a value. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Here is the code:

Public Shared Function SortListOfStringArray(ByVal ListOfStringArray As List(Of String()), ByVal SortByIndex As Integer) As List(Of String())
Return ListOfStringArray.Sort(Function(x, y) x(SortByIndex).CompareTo(y(SortByIndex)))
End Function

Change Function To Build Byte Array Rather Than Concatenating String For TCP Sockets?

Jan 5, 2010

I've been trying to reuse my bosses vb.net buildpacket code which he has successful used for Serial programming eg. SerialPort1.Write(buildpacket(useraddress,252,"0006","0") for the function listed below. My challenge.Create equivalent functionality for Socket BeginSend() which requires a byte array.Whether modifying the vb.net below or getting a c# equivalent to work, it has been repeatedly recommended to scrap the string concatenation approach for which I have to use Encoding.BigEndianUnicode.GetBytes() and then getting rid of extra bytes with zero values.

I'm lacking in imaging something different which would work for socket programming directly and allow me to eliminate all the hassles that c# integer conversions into string value that can be encoded trouble free.I would need to call the equivalent of the following that would return a byte array rather than a string with the following arguments

1. Source address (0-255)
2. Destination address (0-255)
3. Function code ("0001" through "0100")
4 Packet Data Unit (pdu - some integer value

Message Box To Contain The Value Of A String From Page 2

Apr 2, 2010

I have a VB application. Within this application, I have two "pages". I'm trying to access or change data from one of these pages from the other. So, for example, let's call the pages 'Page 1' and 'Page 2'. Let's say I'm working in 'Page 1' and I want a MessageBox to pop up when you click a button and I want the message box to contain the value of a string from 'Page 2'. How would I do that? I think if I had the answer to this one simple question, I should be able to solve all of my problems. I understand the basic structure of VB, but I can't figure out how to tell the program to access data from another page within the application.

VS 2008 Make A Release Build Instead Of A Debug Build?

May 3, 2010

I am using 2008 Express Edition. I am trying to make a Release build instead of a Debug build.Under Tools->Options, Projects and Solutions->General - I checked Show advanced build configurations. The option to switch configurations does not show up in the IDE.

After this, I went to the Project Properties->Compile and switched the Configuration from Active(Debug) to Release. After building, I looked in my project directory, however only in the Debug sub-directory was the .exe and nothing in the Release sub-directory.I have used Visual C++ Express Edition, where I noticed that if you do not change to Release in the IDE than after changing to Release in properties, resets the project to the last configuration setting which is usually Debug.how to make the Debug/Release box available in the IDE, since Tools/Options does not make it show up?
