VB Class Methods Generate "out Of Memory Exception", While Same Code As A Form.exe Running The Functions Does Not
Jun 2, 2009
I created a class library containing some properties and methods, when I call a specific method that runs a sequence of tests, it reports "out of memory exception". When I take the same code and build a form.exe, I do not get the "out of memory exception".

I need to create unit testing project for my current website. The currentw ebsite si written in VB. All unit testing examples are using interface to create mock object. My current VB class does not implment any interface. I have a new problem with this same Form Printing project and I get exactly the same exception but from the different point of code:
line 538: d.PrintFunction(c, typePrint, mp, x, y, extendedHeight, ScanForChildControls)
The exception type is System.AccessViolationException and it says (after I translate it from my own language in which the message is given in my pc, into English):"Protected memory was tried to be read or written. This often indicates that the other memory is damaged"

What I am trying to do is have a class where the functions of the same name are both instance functions and shared functions.
Public Shared Function Get...(byval xx as xx)
and
Public Function Get...
The Public Function uses a Property xx created in the constructor, whereas the Shared Function has the parameters (byval xx as xx).

i have this line of code to catch an exception if a letter is inputed, or if it is out of rang as a number, but I have added WHEN to avoid catching numberical data. Now how can I use an exception error to use it before my case statement in order to avoid running the code twice, cause once the case codes has been through it will run a clear txtbox which is already taken care by the try catch, don`t if thats clear for you but i understand it. here is the code in parts...
Try
'Integer Levels: intLvls is egual to the assigned text box, the first one from
'the top, this line of code allow the user input to be captured into a variable.

I am not sure how clear my question is by the title, but I am trying to make Class methods instead of Instance methods in Visual Basic that way I don't have to waste memory and code creating temporary objects to execute methods that don't need instance variables.
I am not sure if you can do that in VB but I know you can in Objective-C by using either a "+" or "-" sign in front of the method declaration. And in C++ (at least I think, I can't remember) you put the static keyword or const keyword in front of the function. How would I do this in VB if it is possible? Or should I just make a separate set of functions that are not members of a class?

I am instantiating a form object in my code behind the dataset just to access some form level variables and to occasionally set a label in the navigator bar. Recently in the b2 Team version of VS2010 there are some strange errors thrown in the immediate window and then I'm tossed out of debug mode and back into the IDE. This code has been operating for some time in this project without this behavior. A team member has just reproduced the behavior in his development machine also. The error that starts the shutdown of the debug instance is this: Control accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on.

I'm trying to create classes, functions, etc that present a preset list of options to users (in the same way that messagebox control will show the available button options). A simple example is readFile(ByVal strPath as string, ByVal strFileType as string) where the user will see a list of acceptable file types when they put the comma after strPath.

I have a window service that Inherits System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase. While running in debug mode (havent tested compiled), the thread does not see the current user credentials. I need the credentials so I can set up the WebProxy and I would prefer to use the account that service is running under instead of passing the user and pwd as a string. Can someone help me figure out why the code running in the class the inherits from ServiceBase does not have have the credentials of the logged in user?

What is the best way to handle a function that might occasional fail to evaluate, but even when it does fail does not require a halt of the parent routine, though sometimes might require an explanation to the user?I have such a function, deep in my code, that returns a number. Codingwise, the simplest approach would be to make the function nullable, and return null when it can't evaluate. That way the calling routine can continue while also knowing the function failed to return a number.
However, depending upon the circumstances, sometimes I want to display the reason for the fail to the user so they know what to fix. Obviously just returning null isn't enough information. Should I be raising messages inside the function itself as it evaluates for anonymous listeners to catch, to be displayed if desired?(For those rightfully pointing out that logic functions shouldn't be responsible for creating user messages, I didn't mean to imply the function generates the full text message, just somehow transmits the reason for the problem so that the UI could later parse that into a message)
The other option I suppose would be throw exceptions inside the function if it can't evaluate, then catch and interpret to user messages if desired. However, as stated the inability to evaluate typically does not signify a halt to the routine, and now I'd have to put a Try...Catch block around the function call everytime I use it.

i am a beginner in vb.net programming...started a project in it.Below is the breif project description. The application is to ensure the integrity of the files.Following are the majors things that i have to implement
1. To browse the files from the disk on runtime.initially i am just taking the database files so it's basically to connect with the MS access db files.
2.To apply the different hash and encryption algos on the file.
3.To store the results on the hard disk back.
4. To calulate the performance of each algo using some performance matrix.(TIME,MEMORY USAGE etc)
Now i am having problem in two things.First in runtime connectivity with MS access batabase..and secondly and the main problem is that i could'nt find any appropriate builtin function to calulate the processing TIME and the MEMORY usage.

Basicly I have two designer files with 1 implementation each. For some reason both designer files are calling the same implementation file, and I can't find any settings to correct the problem.

We have a purchased application written in Visual Studio 2005 that uses tab controls for displaying information. One of the tabs is for reporting and I am trying to run some code to enable and disable a Validate button. It has a proprietary report component (LxReportView1) that is initially disabled. As user enters information, the Validate button is used to check for required fields. After data entry entries have been validated, user click Validate one last time and record gets flagged as validated and report component (LxReportView1) gets enabled for use. Ideally, whenever this Report tab is clicked, it will run my code EACH TIME.[code]Works fine when user's first action is to bring up a record that has already been validated. So when user clicks on Report tab, report component LxReportView1 has been enabled for use and the Validate button has been disable just as designed. Problem is that given a list of records, if user selects a record that has NOT been validated yet and then later on brings up another record that has been validated, code does not run. How can I get this code to run EACH and EVERY TIME the form loads.

What is the best way to write functions in Microsoft.NET (VB) to avoid memory leaks. I have always followed this style:
Public Sub TestMemoryLeak()
Dim testCon As SqlConnection
Try
[code].....
Here the connection reference is created before the TRY clause and is initialised after the TRY clause. I believe the connection is always closed and dereferenced even if an exception is thrown. Is this good practice? I see a lot of code that creates references and dereferences in the TRY clause, but this would mean that the memory is not correctly handled if an exception is thrown. Some developers say they don't like to clean up in the finally clause.

I've more or less finished the design of the interfase, but there are stange this happening with the form. I can say much about what is wrong because I dont understand it, but I would like to. I have added the form Class code and the Designer Code, is that enough or is more required? Theres a msgbox that popup in the form Load event which I placed there to see what I could learn about the GraphicsBuffer.

"An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: Class not registered (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040154 (REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG))"

I have a form which I use to read data from a text file and export it to an excel template file. The data it reads is constantly updated so I would like to add a check box to cause the data to be read every 10 seconds. It's set up so the user can either do one quick scan by clicking a button, or they can click the button while also having the check box checked and it will scan every 10 seconds. The problem is, once I check the check box, I can't uncheck it. I have created a greatly simplified version of my original code to demonstrate this concept.
