View 9 RepliesI was working through Beth Massi's article, "Using TableAdapters to Insert Related Data into an MS Access Database" here: http:blogs.msdn.co...s-database.aspx
And I configured the TableAdapter exactly as shown by Beth, yet I am getting an error here:
Me.OrderDetailsTableAdapter.Update(newOrderDetailsRow) The Error says: "You must enter a value in the 'OrderDetails.CustomerID' field."
I am using this code for inserting a related record:
Namespace MyDataSetTableAdapters
Public Class AccessIDHelper
'<summary>
[Code].....
I am not able to insert and move on as I am getting the error marked above.
What could be possibly wrong with the above code and why is this giving an error ?
currently i had a program which working fine when its running in the solution explorer, but after published, problem comes.my datagridview cant show updated data while my database access already update...my datagridview only show existed data.could it be my datagrid problem?i get my data programmatically or is my INSERT command doesn't update the dataset?but in the solution explorer does show the dataset was updated. View 3 RepliesI'm trying to retrieve data from an Access database - a simple one. (Just a single table with one column) My task is to view these records through a 'ListView'. No need to manipulate or anything. Just to retrieve data with a simple SQL statement and display via a ListView.
View 4 RepliesI'm trying to write my first application which connects to an Access db. It took me hours to understand this, but I figured out that, if during the creation of the connection I chose to copy the mdb file in my project directory (VB asks this), I get that the database is not updated. Everything works, except the save button which saves new rows in the db. If I answer no, and the original mdb file is used, the database is correctly updated as expected. Is there a reason for this? Why is this happening? Shouldn't the database bu updated anyway?

I have created a link using VS2008 and MS Access 2007.In my database, assume that I have ID, First Name, Last Name, Gender
------------------------
1 John Smith Male
2 Michael Jackson Male
3 Alicia Keys Female
------------------------
These are the data I have in my database. In my form, assume that I have
ID [Combo Box]
First Name [Text Box]
Last Name [Text Box]
Gender [Text Box]
Now, I have 3 ID in my combo box. If I choose [1] in my combo box, I want the rest of my test box show [John] [Smith] [Male].When I choose [2] in my combo box again, it will show [Michael] [Jackson] [Male].
how to get the updated database data and print into crystal report using VB.net?

This VB.NET rookie is asking for the support of those with expertise. BACKGROUND: Form1 has a Datagrid, Dataset1 create by drag DB into datagrid. Form2 presents the record selected from the datagrid. Within the LOAD_FORM I search the DB with the Key and place data in Dataset2 (DS created manually)
CHALELNGE Record updated in Form2 is saved in DB fine and when Form2 is closed, record updated does not appear in Form1. Ive tried the following but no sucess In form1 event Ive got the code to load data into the DS Me.TUSERSTableAdapter.Fill(Me.PTDataSet.TUSERS) FINALLY: What should I do to see the datagrid updated?
I'm still passed from VB6 to VB2008 and...I found it very changed!I've learned in few days how to use the most used commands, but I've got a big problem in connecting to an Access Database.I saw that we can connect to a database using:
- wizard connection
- manual connection
I think that using the Wizard everything is more cleaned and I can reuse the code in a simple way.So I tried the Wizard Connection, but all the guide and tutorial explain the connections using DataGrid. I don't want to show DataGrid. I've learned how to import data in listboxes (also in auto-complete mode) but I cannot understand how to work on data in the way I prefer.
- I've got a combobox with a list of data
- When I "change" the selection (combobox_SelectedIndexChanged) you have to load related data (from another table) in a ListBox (in which I can add other items without inserting them in the DB)
- Send all the data loaded in this fields (there are also other data) to create a record in the DB (like "Order of Product")
part of my code is in below

I would expect to see the path.Path include the new record, however, I also notice that tempnextgen also include the new record. Can anyone help me out on this issue? Why the tempnextgen got updated as well, how to prevent this unexpected operation?
so i need to link the database but i want to use the bind source way, i dont like using the oeldbadaptionand all it needs to do is perform a search for records, insert new record and save the record but

Me.Table1TableAdapter.Fill(Me.AcddDataSet.Table1)
And it succeed with me
I tried same way with insert data to DB like this

How can I connect my vb2008 windows app to an Access 2000 database which is located at www.mysiteserver.com/files/rubbishdatabse.mdb?What code is needed to do so? And where should I put the code in(of coz in the vb app, i know XD, but which part)?
View 8 RepliesI'm currently designing a client application that connects to a SQL Server 2005 database. My app is being used to display data, allows users to run reports and stats on the data. It is being developed using VB2008. Within my VB2008 project, the connection string to the DB is made via SQLEXPRESS.
The road block that I'm running into right now is that it only allows me to connect to a local DB file (.mdf) only. I tried to connect to a different DB file on a server within the same network domain, and it generated the following error:
"The file "U:Data.mdf" is on a network path that is not supported for database files. An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file U:Data.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share." (where U: is a mapped network drive).
Below is the actual connection string in my code:
"SERVER=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=U:Data.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True"
The intention is to have the DB reside on a server, where there is another application that runs as a service to collect the data and then populates this DB. Then my app would just connect to the database, and allows users to run reports based on the data in the DB.
I heard that this is the limitation of SQLEXPRESS: it will not allow connection to a remote database. This is true? If so, is there anyway that I can get around this limitation?
The main reason that I chose SQLEXPRESS in the first place is that because of the licensing issue. The company that I work for do not want to make the users of our software app have to purchase additional license for the full-blown SQL Server Enterprise edition. I also heard that SQL Server Enterprise edition does allow you to connect to a remote DB (.mdf) file.
I need to be able to save, edit, and delete records in an access database through vb2008. Editing and deleting records works perfect, but I cannot save new records. Can anyone assist?
Here is my code

Dim con As OleDbConnection
Dim cmd As OleDbCommand

I'mvery new to VB2008 and have basically no idea regarding much of coding. I have attached a copy of my form. Basically, I have a db named "employee.mdb" with table "Employee". It has 3 fields Name, Dept and Designation. I want to connect my db with the form and want the following functions (when the respective buttons are clicked)Add: Add a new record to the db and save it without overwriting an existing record.Delete: Delete the selected record from the dbSave: Save all details<<: Move to the previous record>>: Move to the next record. I hope I have explained myself clearly
View 2 RepliesI have two tables in one to many relationship in an access 2003 database.I am using vb6 and visual studio 2008.I want a data entry form (in grid view) for child table. I want to display & add, Update, delete child records accordingly with parent.
i.e. What I require is One combo box displaying a parent field and corresponding child entries will be shown in grid view. Data entry form for parent table may be on separate form.Is there a full sample source code for above mentioned theme.
I need to know who to write data from several text boxes on a form to a sql database.I have created the sql database on a localhost using myphp admin, i have created the connection in a module named as dbconnect()i can try the connection and this connects fine, but unsure how to write the data from the texboxes to the database.
View 3 RepliesA simple database has been created in Access, which is just basically a table of text, with some images as entries. A form has been created in VB2008 Express and linked to the database. Either a combibox, text boxes or pictureboxes are linked to a column form the database. The first row entries are all displayed correctly in the relavant boxes (except for the images, which for some reason aren't displayed). If another value in the comibox is selected, the other box values don't change and there is still no images visible...
View 1 RepliesI can save my data to access database and in the access database field I set it to date/time.But problem is when I get the value out from the database.. the format is always month/day/year hour:minutes:seconds example today: 5/2/2011 12:00:00..How to get the value into listview becoming May/2/2011 without the hour..Here's my code to get it from database ListView1.Items(i).SubItems.Add(dt.Rows(i)(14).ToString).The second problem is.When I would like to edit, how can the datetimepicker get the listview value ? [code] info: using access 2003 (.mdb) the Date of Birth field has been set into Date/Time.
View 2 RepliesI am developing an application in visual basic 2008. I want to populate a drop down list onthe fly with values extracted from the database. I want both the displayed and value items to come from the same.
View 1 RepliesI am trying to import data from an access database to a access database that my project uses I am having problems with combo box fields in the database with the data. I want to import what is displayed instead of the numerical key value. Example: The combo box displays employee names but the value stored is the key value from the employee table so instead of importing John Doe it imports 2 is there a way to make the actual name instead of the number?
View 4 RepliesI have used VB (versions 2 - 6) through many years; however, I am crash-course training myself into the VB2008 / VB2010 world kicking a screaming. I would like suggestions as to what SQL database access method should I focus more on in my learning process without making me feel that I'm a million years behind. I know I have WinForms where I can create a datasourse and drag / drop fields or tables on a form to create a grid (not really what I'm looking for).
My trouble isn't so much designing the form but in how I access the database. Theres XML, LINQ to SQL, ADO.NET, and many other methods. Not only do I need to grasp these methods quickly but I also need to know what type of projects I should create. What I mean is...I was thinking that I would design a WinForm app; however, I see that there are WPF apps and others to chose from. This is getting deep. I know it depends on the project that I'm working on. My plans are to write an app based off of either an SQL Express 2008 or SQL Server 2008 database. This first app will be standalone for now but may later become multi-user. I know I'm far behind on my learning curve coming from VB6. I have read a bit on VB2005 / 2008 / 2010. I own
both VB2008 and VB2010. I use VB2008 at work. I know ADO.NET is still alive but by what I read online, it's a dying method and is only kept for backward compatibility. XML and LINQ to SQL and other methods are all pretty new to me.
I have two data tables. the second related to the first. Using a datagridview for the first table I am able to enter and save data ok. if I run the code twice in a row the data is still there. When I edit the data in the related table in it's own datagirdview the data is there and displays correctly, but on running the code a second time the related data is lost. In both cellendedit events I am using
Me.table.Update(Me.FigsDataSet.table)
Me.Validate()
I would like to know the best, or standard, way to accomplish real-time client updates in a small multi-user application using an access data table as a data source.Specifically, this application will be used by 3-4 people. It uses a datatable which is filled on form load and bound to a datagrid at design time. The datatable is stored on a shared drive. The data table on the shared drive is updated in two ways:
1) Users can update the datagrid which then updates the datatable on the shared drive via the data adapter's Update method.
2) A server application does some work on some text files, periodically updating the data table.
I need the clients to reflect the changes to the data table on the shared drive as closely to real-time as possible. I know that the data table stored in memory on the client is disconnected from the data table on the shared drive, so I must query again to get the updates.
1) Is there an alternvative model I can use which is connected, and which will automatically reflect the updates in the data table on the shared drive?
2) If not, what is the best way to check for changes in the data table (so I can know when to call the data adapter fill method)? I am planning to poll the drive for a change to the .mdb file, raise an event and then fill the data adapter when the event is triggered. I am using this method successfully now to check for changes to a text file in another application, and I know how to implement it?

This program is very difficult for me, but I must get threw it or I cannot finish... What I am doing is making a Database of foreign Languages with the spelling of the words and the pronounciation inside the database... The USER enters a paragraph of words into the translator textbox and pushed translate. The program has a DATABANK of words with the phonetic spellings and matches the word, then translates to phonetics. The problem is that new words keep appearing inside the language. So I incorporated a Database of 2 fields
