Feb 2, 2010I just created an idle lockout screen for my software (it's financial software, so if the program is inactive for 5 minutes, the login screen appears again).My question is... is there an easy way to hide all the other windows in my program that may be open? So let's say they are in frmData, and they have the dlgOptions screen open, with the dlgOptions_SelectItems dialog open from dlgOptions. There are 2 dialogs open on top of frmData. And, they are all opened with .ShowDialog().So, let's say they have that many windows open, and then leave there computer for 10 minutes. After 5 minutes, the login screen appears. But all that other stuff is in the background.Is there an easy way to "hide" all the other open windows, and just show the login screen, and then once login returns DialogResult.Yes, then show the forms/dialogs again? I could do this by delcaring instances of each form in a main module and doing it this way. But that sounds like a pain in the butt. Also, I don't know If I could hide frmMain while a dialog is open from it.

Apr 25, 2010I am trying to do a form it has 2 comboboxes and I have the arrays set up one of the combboxes is for pizza size and it has 4 selections and the other combobox is for crust style it has 2 selections. The user has to pick on of each and it pills the price from the array and then displays the price in a text box. I for the life of me can't figure out how to get it to pull the info from the array and then display it in the text box, it either displays nothing in the text box or a 0 or 1.

Aug 6, 2010I'm learning about the cultureinfo and doing ok but there is one thing I can't work out.I'd like to know how to find out the display settings of the date for the user pc.For example, I have an American bought laptop using the us culture so the date will be MM/dd/YY but I have changed the date setting to read dd/MM7YY. So that means I haven't actually changed the inbuilt cultureinfo, I've just "altered" a setting and it's that setting I want to access. When my project starts I have a label that I want to read as dd/MM/YY.With another pc it might be different - the culture might be uk but the date setting might be changed MM/dd/YY so I want the label to read MM/dd/YY etc etc etc.If the cultureinfo hasn't been changed then I want the label to read whatever the date is set to etc.

I am not sure how to go about storing the information. Should I go with a .sdf file database, registry, simply storing them in a file, or some other method?
What I need is to be able to:
read/write/delete from it
read possibly up to a 20mb file and sorting it without a lot of lag
be transported to multiple systems and maintain these writes (installed on many systems)
I know I could split up the reading/writing to anther thread. Even to other .DLL's and whatnot. But as for storing. Not sure what the best option is.

That part works fine but when you click the button to make it do anything it will get the variables that it need from the tags on the cells for each song but for some reason the one for the Album just disappears... I tried having it just show the value in a message box and it works fine. Just when I try to combine it with another variable then it wont show at all. Heres my code

For example the user will select an item from the listbox, enter say the length of a song in the textbox say 2:00 for song #1, select say song #2, enter the song time for that song say 3:00, click on song #1 again and have the same textbox display the length of that song and be able to do that until there are no more songs on the list.

at the rxData.dataPacket(i) = element I will get a NullReference error every now and then. I could enclose it in a try/catch statement, but I'd like to fix the root problem if possible.This device is communicating to microcontrollers, and it is possible that they won't always give a value... but my feeling is this is some sort of UI threading issue. When debugging, even though there is a null exception, many times there actually does seem to be data in dataReceived.data.ToList(). Is there an easy way to place the whole data processing routine on a thread separate from the UI?Edit: Changed code to match answer and give more info on where it is used. Still get NullReferenceExceptions after about 1,000 completed send/receive requests to the HID device.
.net - VB Flamed For Being Easy And Yet Python Is Not?
Sep 19, 2010I have always wondered about this and seen this among lots of programmers. Why is a VB programmer or VB code easily dismissed as too noobish and easy while the same does not apply to Python or Python code? After all, isn't Python as easy as VB is? And it does provide drag-n-drop GUI application building also. So why is it that VB is flamed and yet Python is not?
