Dec 8, 2010I am reading from a log file.My target is to display the 10 most popular requested URL's of a website.One way to do this is to read all log entries and save each URL to a Dictionary. The dictionary has the URL as the Key and the number of visits as the Value. If a URL exists in the dictionary the Value of that URL's Key is increased +1, otherwise a new Key/Value pair is added with a value of 1.
Once the processing is finished the dictionary is sorted by Value and the top 10 entries are shown.This might work, however it could cause a serious memory problem when dealing with a log file of a website which has thousands of different page url's (think query strings).Since I only need the top 10 entries, is there a way to avoid placing all the URL's into memory and still get the top 10 URL + Visits count?

Every 90 minutes a Microsoft Search Server hits a particular (spider) page which calls the code to put the objects into the cache.The issue i have is that over a period of time, the memory usage of the application grows exponentially. Lets say that in a week, the memory usage of the application pool grows to over 1gb

Mar 17, 2010I am trying to allow changes to our database through a timecard program. We use and Image database and I am using VS 2008. I am getting the error: (MDMDA) Unable to change property. The trouble shooting tip tell me "check the error code property of the exception to determine the HRESULT returned by the COM object." The error line is in bold.

May 27, 2009I cannot use Visual Basic 2008 at all. When I go to "new project" and choose "Windows Form Application" I get this error.I have tried multiple uninstall/reinstall with no result.A microsoft reply to this suggested that I needed: " .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 " I checked, and I did not have the .netframework 2.0 service Pack 1.
When I tried to download and install the above from Microsoft.com, the istaller said that "it was not allowsed" and I was not able to install the service pack 1.
I tried Uninstalling net framework 3.5, 3.0, 2.0 and then reinstalling .netframework 2.0 sevice pack 1; then reinstalling Visual basic 2008 express edition. At the reinstall of Visual basic 2008, .netframework 2.0 sevice pack 1 is unistalled by .net framework service pack 2.When I check the foruims for simiar problems, the formus are mostly for Visual basic 5.0, or other programs that I do not have.
Here is the programs I have installed:
Operating system: Windows XP
Microsoft .net framework 1.1
Microsoft .NET framwork 1.1 Hotfix(KB928366)
Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2

VS 2008 Cross-thread Error, Change Control Property By (other) Class Event PropertyChanged?
Apr 1, 2010I need some help to understand my options to get this working. I try to update a textbox control by a property-changed event from a class variable. I've digged around for a day and have a vague understanding that this can be solved in three ways:
1. Using some "if InvokeRequired", "Invoke" code in the handler method
2. By programming a special delegate class for this variable
3. By using a databinding directly linking the control (textbox) to the class event
Now.. Are these options correct? And would it be possible to get some help to show these three solutions in actual code (relevant to mine)? I can't seem to manage to sort all the information to a working code. Also, what are the pros and cons of the different solutions?
As my code stands now, it's obviously none of the above, as it gives a cross-thread error, as indicated.

Jan 13, 2010I'm working on a simple base form in which all the other forms in the project will inherit. This base form only adds 5 properties (at the moment) dealing with painting a gradient background. The problem I'm facing right now is when I change a property on Form1 (the test form) and click run it doesn't show that change. One of the properties of this class is another custom class (Class2) with its own properties.I have a property grid with the selected object set to Class 1. I can see Class 2 as a property, but i would like to expand Class 2 to show its properties in the same property grid.
Im basically trying to do the exact same thing as the Font Class on a form. If you look at the properties of a form in the designer, you can see the font property. You can then expand that to show the properties of the font class.

Mar 21, 2011I am fairly new to visual basic and have written this program to detect a change in a selected pixel on the screen. When the pixel changes, a sound plays every x seconds. It works fine but after a few hours of operation a possible memory leak causes it to either crash the program or the PC. I have watched the process and I can see 4k added to it every 4 seconds or so. Where this memory leak is coming from?

VS 2008 - Property Grid - Click On Item Show Its Property
Mar 18, 2009I have a listbox with several list items added. I want that as user click on an item, I should be able to show its property. This should change for different items. For example (hypothetical) : Listbox has numbers 1 - 10. Now when I select 1 I should be able to set property - Name, Lastname, Colour, Age.
When I select 2 I should be able to set - Age, Hair Colour (clr shows), Weight, Date. When I select 3 then - City (combo box drop down), Country, Age only. This way value changes for diff items. One way is to put them in property grid and show them. Though this looks nice but adding/removing items in that is not easy. You need to have a class that refer that to prop grid. Do I have to code for each classes for all values in listbox or is there an easier way to manage items in property grid. If you think prop grid is not the right tool for such an activity then can you suggest something else.
