Deleting From A Cascaded DataGridView Populated Via Linq To SQL?

Nov 18, 2009

I am having problems deleting any rows from a cascaded DGV. I get a run time error complaining that I am breaking a constraint almost as if LINQ is try to delete from the parent table. I have 2 DGVs on a form one displaying Species and the other all SubSpecies for the currently selected species and that works fine.

However when I try to delete a SubSpecies I get the following exception:- An attempt was made to remove a relationship between a Species and a SubSpecies. However, one of the relationship's foreign keys (SubSpecies.SpeciesID) cannot be set to null. At first I thought the error was raised by SQL server due to the Cascading Delete limitations on L2S but the error message for that is very different the DataContext.Log doesn't show any attempt to change the data.

The code used to bind the DGV's is as follows:-

Protected Sub BindControls()
Try
DC = New DataClassesWhatToPlantDataContext

Inform User That A DataGridView Is Being Populated?

Oct 19, 2009

I am writing a program in VB.Net to manage text messages sent through an API. It allows you to view messages in a datagridview and filter by date, sent/unsent etc...

To load the messages I'm executing an SQL statement and retrieving a DataTable which then gets set as the DataSource for my DataGridView control.

The problem is that depending on the filters selected the user could be selecting a lot of records and it would take some time for the DataSource to update. I want to inform the user of this load time by providing a progress bar or label of some kind.

I have used progress bars before when looping through data but this is loading it all at once. I thought of displaying a label when the user clicks to load the data and then hiding it when the data is loaded. But this happens instantaneously even when the data is still loading.

Is there an event on the DataGridView I can use perhaps?

VS 2008 Multiple Datagridview Populated From Same Datatable?

Jan 28, 2011

VB2008 & mysql
Is it possible?
If so how?

Wanting to have multiple datagridviews showing unique information (via filters?) based on cell content all coming from one data table.

Example:
3 datagridviews accessing the same datatable that has a [Job Status] column limited to one of the following 3 entries NEW, JOBS IN PROGRESS or COMPLETED and having that column hidden from view on all gridviews

Top grid showing only NEW jobs

Middle grid showing only JOBS IN PROGRESS

Bottom grid showing only COMPLETED jobs

DataGridView Cell Search Using A LINQ Query?

Jul 23, 2010

I have a VB.NET search routine, part of which is provided, below, that checks all Text cells in a DataGridView for a given string (inclusive), using a basic set of nested loops to perform the search:

' Search for the first occurrence of the given string
For Each row As DataGridViewRow In dgvMembers.Rows
' Skip the new row

[Code].....

is there a way to replicate this behavior using LINQ? Basically I would like the query to select (or return) the first DataGridViewCell whose text contains the search string. I've done some tinkering with sub-queries and the like, but I'm still having trouble wrapping my brain around the concepts (too many years of writing T-SQL, I guess).

Datagridview Column Order From Linq Query?

Mar 19, 2010

I am using a modal form with a datagridview in order to populate textboxes on a parent form. The datagridview is bound to an anonymous type resulting from a linq query, which varies depending on the textbox control whose keypress event is called. I always want to display a key value in column 0 of the datagridview (along with a variable number of additional columns), and then use that key value once the user selects a row.

However, when setting an anonymous type from a linq query as the datasource for a datagridview control, the columns are indexed alphabetically rather than in the sequence selected in the query. This requires setting the displayindex as a workaround, and then keeping track of which column contains my key value. I read elsewhere that this was something fixed in VS2008 SP1, but I still encounter the behavior.

Generic Linq Query On A DataGridView Datasource?

Nov 4, 2010

I would like to implement a generic Linq query on a DataGridView.DataSource to retreive a row whith an idField. I did search MSDN, StackOverflow, etc... but didn't quite find what I'm looking for. how I could implement it ?

This is the non-generic code, but I would like to make it work whatever the type of the DataSource is (as long as it implements IEnumerable I guess) and the name and type of the key field.

Dim query = (From note In notesList _
Where note.IdNote = mIdNoteSelectionne _
Select note).FirstOrDefault()
Dim ancienIndex As Integer = notesList.IndexOf(query)

noteList is a List(Of Note), Note is a simple entity class I created, with just members and properties

This is in VB, but feel free to send some C# code, I'll translate it.

VS 2008 Edit/update Records From The Database Using Textboxes By Linq To Sql?

Sep 26, 2009

This is the hardest part of LinqtoSql database handling operations in visual basic 2008 I ever encountered,w/c is the update operation cause Ive been posting this thread several times from the other forum site but noone yet was able to answer my question,examples were given but its not efficient cause it won't specify based on the codes i gave and i know its not easy but im still hoping that one of the answerers of this forum will be able to resolve this particular linqtosql operation codes. I used textboxes in manipulating all data into the database such as displaying records, adding records, & updating records, basically I used with textboxes in doing those database operations. I will give you 3 block of codes w/c corresponds those database operations I used and differentiate from each other inorder for us to determine why one of them has no progress or won't do its operation w/c is the update operation...

*************Block of Codes#1(Adding Records)*************
Private Sub Button1_Click(------------------) Handles Button1.Click
Dim db As New memrecDataContext()

[code]....

I would like you to identify,differentiate, or troubleshoot the block of codes#3, or anyhow, why it has no progress at all or it won't edit and change the records but it runs and no error in regards with its code, and the other 2 blocks of codes were able to successfully do its operations.I was just wandering why only the block of codes#3 is not doing its operation successfully when you change the record being displayed in the textbox.Is there a possible way to edit records in the textboxes?If there is.... Is it possible to debug the block of codes#3 to successsfully do its operation? If you could possibly give an example,can you based it on the block of codes#3?

LINQ Query Is Enumerated - Turn On Some Kind Of Flag That Alerts Me Each Time A LINQ Query Is Enumerated?

Sep 22, 2009

I know that LINQ queries are deferred and only executed when the query is enumerated, but I'm having trouble figuring out exactly when that happens.Certainly in a For Each loop, the query would be enumerated.What's the rule of thumb to follow? I don't want to accidentally enumerate over my query twice if it's a huge result.

For example, does System.Linq.Enumerable.First enumerate over the whole query? I ask for performance reasons. I want to pass a LINQ result set to an ASP.NET MVC view, and I also want to pass the First element separately. Enumerating over the results twice would be painful.It would be great to turn on some kind of flag that alerts me each time a LINQ query is enumerated. That way I could catch scenarios when I accidentally enumerate twice.

VS 2008 Unable To Do A Case-insensitive Query On A Table?

Jul 13, 2009

I'm having trouble when trying to do a case-insensitive query on a table. Right now the query is:

txtQuery = "SELECT Status, RankingSearchEngines FROM [tbl-DATA-Client-Keywords] WHERE [Client-ID-Code] = '" & clientNo & "' AND lower(Keyword) LIKE '" & sField(0) & "';"

The actual query executed is:

SELECT Status, RankingSearchEngines FROM [tbl-DATA-Client-Keywords] WHERE [Client-ID-Code] = '1402' AND lower(Keyword) LIKE 'flyer printing';

I have an entry 'Flyer Printing' in the database, and this query works perfectly without the case-insensitive check.I'm not sure if this is an OleDB issue, as I've never had this sort of problem with SQLPlus, or anything else

The exception being thrown is:

IErrorInfo.GetDescription failed with E_FAIL(0x80004005).

Linq To Sql Query Using 2008 Express Edition

Jan 4, 2011

I encountered something like a logical error which I could hardly resolve since I'm new to this technology. I'm using visual basic 2008 express edition with its built-in linq-to-sql technology. I was able to retrieve, add, edit, and delete such record using the linq-to-sql method, but one thing.I could not get is something like relational database operation. Here is my problem. As you can see the table above which represents the records on my database. You can notice there some account numbers that were duplicated which I used as the primary key or identifier. What I want is when I'd like to query such account number it should display all the records that have the same account numbers on it. Say for example, if I query the account number 00003. It should only pull up and display three records with the name Maverick and their corresponding address, movie rented and date.What is happening in my end is when I query such account number which are being duplicated in the database I encountered two things, its either it would display all the records in the database with different account numbers associated or it gives me an error message if I change my code from 'For Each memrec In db.Table3s' to 'For Each memrec In retrn' statement.What I've been trying to do here is if you enter the account number on the search box, it should only display the records on the combo box associated with the account number being entered. Like if you enter 00003 on the search box, it should only display the three movies rented by Maverick no more no less on the combo box. [code]

I have already tried that set of codes before but it's working the same thing. I tried many times modifying my codes before I posted my comment in this forum thinking that i can resolve it on my own but I wasn't able to. That code won't still filter the records in the database. I would like to verify that the table above is only representation but the real column on the table on my database is 'Account#' not Account Number and visual basic would detect the code as 'Account_'. May i know why Movies_Rented column on my table is not a member of string? Why is it the code you gave would still display all the records on the combo box? this is what im not getting. hope you can still find the solution to this issue.

VS 2008 Convert A String Into A Linq Query?

May 20, 2012

Is there a way to convert a string into a linq query? Searching for those words brings up tons of stuff unrelated to what I'm trying to do..For instance, this works, of course...

Dim lstMyQuery = (From item in htMyTable.values where item(0) = "Apple" Select item)

But somehow I want to do this:

Dim strQuery = "From item in htMyTable.values where item(0) = " & CHR(34) & "Apples" & CHR(34) & " Select item"
Dim lstMyQuery = (Somehow run/convert strQuery as a query)

The reason is strQuery will be different each time depending on what the user has selected earlier in the program.R if lstMyQuery is already a collection, is there a way to add to it?

Dim lstMyQuery = (From item in htMyTable.values where item(0) = "Apples" Select item)

(this obviously doesn't work, but it's basically what I want to do...)

lstMyQuery.Add(From item in htMyTable.values where item(0) = "Oranges" Select item)

No column headings or data appeared in the DataGridView. What am I doing wrongly? There are 34 fields (columns) in the DataSet - maybe it exceeds the capacity of a DataGridView.

VS 2008 - LINQ Query Against A Typed Datatable That Will Return Me Duplicated Data?

Jan 25, 2010

I'm trying to do a LINQ Query against a typed datatable that will return me duplicated data.With out going into too much detail, here's the basic setup:

strCode1 - string type
intCode1 - int32 type
intAdjustor - int32

There are more fields but these are the ones that are important.I'm going to do my best to describe this, as it's kind of confusing.In theory intCode1 is a key for strCode1 (hence the names). So each time intCode1 is duplicated, the same strCode1 should appear. Example:

[code]...

Ultimately I'd like to get a List(Of T) - where T is my typed data row. In SQL, I would simply use a sub query, to get a distinct list of strCode1 and intCode1, then do a count, grouped by strCode1 where I get more than one row.I'm not sure how to translate that into LINQ, AND get the original types data rows returned in a list.

Asp.net - Complex Linq Query - Add A .Where() Or .Any() Predicate To Reduce Query Complexity (in VB)?

Sep 14, 2010

I have to join two main tables, and I need to filter the results by elements in an ASP.NET web form. These filters are created on the fly so I have to use a lot of where extensions to filter the query. I want to execute the query with as optimized SQL as possible.

I am first doing a simple join between TW_Sites and TW_Investigators. Then there are two sub-tables that are involved. TW_InvestigatorToArea and TW_InvestigatorToDisease. While most of the where clauses are working fine, I have found a performance issue that won't be an issue right now, but will be an issue as the table gets bigger.

The arrays DiseaseCategories and DiseaseAreas would be the results of a CheckBoxList result.
