VS 2010 Bind Linq Query Result To Datagridview
May 9, 2012
I want to create a LINQ to entities query getting data(join) out of two tables and bind the result as datasource to a datagridview.
Unfortunately I seem to stumble upon a syntax issue.
Table 1 : dcpricing.tblpricing
Table 2 : dcpropertydetail.tblpropertydetail
Grid: grdpricing

I have 2 tables:tblcode and tbltransaction tblCode with 2 fields:Code and Description with data like
Code Description
A test1
B test2
C test3
and tbltransaction with 4 fields:transactionID,UniqueID,Code,Value with data liketransactionID and UniqueID are the primary keys)
transactionID UniqueID Code Value
120 1 A 0
120 1 B 1
I want to write a query that outputs:
transactionID UniqueID test1 test2 test3
120 1 0 1 0
so because tblcode has 3 fields I have 3 columns which are test1, test2 and test3(the descriptions of Code A,B and C) i tried to use pivots but it didn't work for me since I don't know in advance the number of rows in tblcode?

I would like to bind a DataGridView to the results of a query generated as text at runtime. How can I send a query as text to Microsoft Access and bind the results to the DataGridView? When the user clicks the button (ok_btn), I want the contents of the textbox (query_txt.Text) sent to Microsoft Access, then I want the results of the query shown in my DataGridView (results_grid).
Simple one-row queries are fine for now: (SELECT "a";, SELECT "a", "b";, SELECT now();)
NOTE: C# accepted, VB.NET preferred

I want to make a search form the user completes the 3 textboxes and 2 datetimepickers. (so five components).
Also I have a button called search and a datagridview.
When the user presses the search button it searches into those 2 tables (depending on what user typed in the 3 textboxes and selected on 2 datetimepickers).
Example of search:
The user searches like this:
When it presses the search button the results will be stored in datagridview(first textbox is the field DB-20-RTS from table PatrimoniuMasini and the rest are fields from the specified columns (name of labels) from the second table FoaieParcursMasina -is the second row from this second table).
Here's the code in my search button (don't know how I can store the 5 things(2 datetimepickers and 3 textboxes in the DataGridView) . My problem is in understanding the property item of DataGridView(DataGridView1):
DataGridView1.Item(row_index,column_index) -general syntax
Here's the full code of button search:
Dim conexiune As SqlConnection 'conexiune cu sql server
Dim comandasql As SqlCommand 'cerere -interogare sql
Dim msg As String ' msg- variabila dk suntem conectati sau nu

I am using an Access database to store (filepaths to) pictures as well as comments people can leave on them. One picture can have multiple comments, so the tables look like this:
_____________ _____________
|Photos | |Comments |
|------------| |-------------|
|Id (PK) | |Id (PK) |
|PhotoPath | |PhotoId (FK) |
|Description | |Comment |
|____________| |_____________|
What I need to do now is retrieve a list of all Photos along with their Comments. So I have a class Photo with a collection of Comments:
vb.net
Public Class Photo
Public Property Id As Integer
Public Property PhotoPath As String
Public Property Description As String
Public Property Comments As List(Of Comment) End Class Public Class Comment
Public Property Id As Integer
Public Property PhotoId As Integer
Public Property Comment As String
End Class
I can retrieve the records using an INNER JOIN query (right?), as such;
SELECT Photos.*, Comments.*
FROM (Photos INNER JOIN Comments ON Photos.Id = Comments.PhotoId)
From the result of that, for each row in the result I can create a new Photo instance, set its properties and put it in a List(Of Photo) for further processing (displaying). However, how do I handle the Comments? With this query I would get a lot of duplicate Photos. I'd get a row for each comment, but most of these rows will represent the same photos... How do I handle this the best way? I have used inner join queries before, but only for a one-to-one relationship so I never had this problem before. Now when I finally need a one-to-many relationship I realize I've no idea how to handle this appropriately...
There must be some standard way of handling this? When I previously handled cases like this I didn't use an inner join, I just retrieved all Photos first, then iterate through them and run another query to retrieve the Comments that belong to that Photo (SELECT * FROM Comments WHERE PhotoId = ?). That works fine, but when the tables are getting larger it is getting noticeably slower. So I want to do it in a single query, I definitely want to avoid running hundreds of queries if I can.

I have a VB.NET search routine, part of which is provided, below, that checks all Text cells in a DataGridView for a given string (inclusive), using a basic set of nested loops to perform the search:
' Search for the first occurrence of the given string
For Each row As DataGridViewRow In dgvMembers.Rows
' Skip the new row
[Code].....
is there a way to replicate this behavior using LINQ? Basically I would like the query to select (or return) the first DataGridViewCell whose text contains the search string. I've done some tinkering with sub-queries and the like, but I'm still having trouble wrapping my brain around the concepts (too many years of writing T-SQL, I guess).

I am using a modal form with a datagridview in order to populate textboxes on a parent form. The datagridview is bound to an anonymous type resulting from a linq query, which varies depending on the textbox control whose keypress event is called. I always want to display a key value in column 0 of the datagridview (along with a variable number of additional columns), and then use that key value once the user selects a row.
However, when setting an anonymous type from a linq query as the datasource for a datagridview control, the columns are indexed alphabetically rather than in the sequence selected in the query. This requires setting the displayindex as a workaround, and then keeping track of which column contains my key value. I read elsewhere that this was something fixed in VS2008 SP1, but I still encounter the behavior.

I would like to implement a generic Linq query on a DataGridView.DataSource to retreive a row whith an idField. I did search MSDN, StackOverflow, etc... but didn't quite find what I'm looking for. how I could implement it ?
This is the non-generic code, but I would like to make it work whatever the type of the DataSource is (as long as it implements IEnumerable I guess) and the name and type of the key field.
Dim query = (From note In notesList _
Where note.IdNote = mIdNoteSelectionne _
Select note).FirstOrDefault()
Dim ancienIndex As Integer = notesList.IndexOf(query)
noteList is a List(Of Note), Note is a simple entity class I created, with just members and properties
This is in VB, but feel free to send some C# code, I'll translate it.

I know that LINQ queries are deferred and only executed when the query is enumerated, but I'm having trouble figuring out exactly when that happens.Certainly in a For Each loop, the query would be enumerated. What's the rule of thumb to follow? I don't want to accidentally enumerate over my query twice if it's a huge result.
For example, does System.Linq.Enumerable.First enumerate over the whole query? I ask for performance reasons. I want to pass a LINQ result set to an ASP.NET MVC view, and I also want to pass the First element separately. Enumerating over the results twice would be painful. It would be great to turn on some kind of flag that alerts me each time a LINQ query is enumerated. That way I could catch scenarios when I accidentally enumerate twice.

How would I go about counting the number of times a given query occurs inside of a text file using LINQ?I need to search through the attached file and see how many justices were appointed by each president, and then create a new text file displaying the following:
presName, justiceCounter 'president name ordered by first name, number of justices appointed
I pretty much get how to do everything except for keeping an accurate counter within the LINQ query. However, I do feel confused about the order in which I should write this code, as in where I should keep my counter for how many justices a given president has appointed.
My output is displaying like this:
Abraham Lincoln,111
Abraham Lincoln,111
Abraham Lincoln,111

I am creating a mediaplayer / playlist creator tool that basically imports MP3 songs into playlists (grids). I'm looking to add search functionality where the user can search all open playlists (or a subset of the open playlists). A Playlist is basically a collection of AudioFiles, where an AudioFile is a class that holds the filename of the MP3 file and then exposes the tags (Title, Artist, Album, etc) in public properties.
The idea is that the user can search for a certain expression (for example "the"), and that he can then choose whether to search in the title, in the title and artist, in the title or artist, in the title, artist and/or album, etc. However, I'm having a hard time implementing this and also having it kind of dynamic.
At the moment I am simply gathering all the AudioFiles from the open playlists (or from the subset of playlists the user chooses) and then running a simple LINQ query to find those AudioFiles where the Title contains the search text. Then I display the resulting AudioFiles in a new playlist window:
[Code]....
In case the AND / OR distinguishing is too hard, I would be happy to start with just letting it default to 'OR', so that the user can check Title and Album for example. If he would then search for 'a' then all songs that contain 'a' in their title as well as all songs that contain 'a' in their album should be returned. I guess that makes it easier, but I still wouldn't know how to dynamically create the LINQ query.
