VB Express - Functions Are Available - PRINT Dialogs And TIME/DATE Dialogs

Feb 1, 2010

I just downloaded the latest VB Express. It seems that thought the functions are available, there are many that are not as fully functioning as they should be, like PRINT dialogs and TIME/DATE dialogs, etc. Are some of these functions not fully developed in VB Express because they are only available to the licensed version?

System.io - Using The Open File And Save File Dialogs In .net?

Sep 6, 2009

Once a user has selected a file with the open file dialog, how can I handle this action? For example, if the user has selected a .txt file and has opened it, how can it get the data from the file? How can it return the path that the user found the file in? Then, how can it save the file?I know that there is a OpenFileDialog.OpenFile() method, but I am also pretty sure this is not what I am looking for. I have also tried the ToObject method, but I probably messed up somehow.

Save / Load Icon File Dialogs

Jun 18, 2012

What the icon file filter is for load/save file dialogs. (I know the jpeg one is "JPEG Files (*.jpg)|*.jpg|PNG Files (*.png)|*.png|BMP Files (*.bmp)|*.bmp|All files (*.*)|*.*" But as far as I know you can't use these as icons without an icon editor).

if we don't mention the decoding what decoding will they use?I do not think it's System.Text.Encoding.Default. Things work well if I EXPLICITLY put System.Text.Encoding.Default but things go wrong when I live that empty. So this doesn't work well

Dim b = System.IO.File.ReadAllText("test.txt")
System.IO.File.WriteAllText("test4.txt", b)

VS 2008 Launching Default Application From 2008 Under Windows 7

Nov 5, 2009

Within my application we store objects i.e images, word docs, etc etc. These are stored in a listview and when the user double clicks the item it launches the default application assigned to the file type i.e a bmp will launch paint, doc will launch word etc etc.

Everything works great in all versions of windows except the new Windows 7 where i am getting this error message:

Im guessing this is something to do with permissions etc, but can anybody shed more light on this and where to look?

Changing Items Shown In Explorer Combobox Of File Dialogs?

Jan 13, 2010

In my dialog I want to prevent the user to browse freely in certain places (this is due to the fact that my application will be running in a terminal server environment). So I want to to limit the items that will be visible in the top combobox of the server. I want it to start with "My Computer" instead of the usual "Desktop". Furthermore I only want to add mapped network drives under "My Computer" so that the user won't be able to see any local resources. With Spy++ I have been looking around at what happens when a FileDialog starts.

So far I have found that for each item in the combobox CB_SETITEMDATA and CB_INSERTSTRING methods are executed. By using a hook to the combobox I am able to intercept these messages, but sofar I am unable to determine the exact contents of what is inserted, so I am unable to determine wether it is the "Desktop" item or not.I have also discovered that the "My Computer" node is only added at the moment that the combobox is expanded. So I would need a way to get a handle to "My Computer" and insert an item for it manually

Change The Default Modifier From Friend To Private In The Windows Forms Designer In VS 2008?

Jul 2, 2010

When I develop a Windows Forms app in Visual Studio using C#, every control that I add to my form is by default marked as private, which is what I want.

When using VB.NET, every control is by default marked as Friend (the equivalent of internal in C#), which is not what I want.

Can I just change this default? It seems like surely it's a setting somewhere.

VS 2008 Make A Shell Replacement For The Windows Default Shell

Aug 1, 2009

I'm going to attempt to make a shell replacement for the Windows default shell: explorer.exe. I'm not sure if its possible using Vb.Net, but I can't seem why not. My end goal is to use a custom made shell for a Windows Preinstallation Environment instead of the default command prompt. I plan to use a 3rd party program to compile the program with the .NET Framework. Otherwise, it wouldn't work because Windows PE does not support the .NET Framework.

Using Background Intelligent Transfer Service To Transfer Files To Server?

Mar 20, 2012

I will use the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) to transfer files from a client (laptop) to a shared folder on a server within our local network. The problem is a very slow network bandwith, if we transfer a file, the other clients canīt work, all requests to other clients (application) or viewing internet pages needs a long time.My idea is to use BITS in my tool to copy/transfer a file from client to server, also I hope to get more performance for the internet requests.

Getting A Default Windows Path For VB?

Apr 15, 2012

So im just wondering, in batch they have a default way of saying the original drive or folderpath like so: %drive% for your C: drive or whatever your drive is or like %windir% for the windows directory. I need this to extract files into the windows folder and some people might have a D: drive instead of C: or Windows.001 instead of Windows. Is there a way for this in vb 2008-2012?

Fast File Transfer Using .NET?

I need to transfer files from one server to multiple cients (using the internet) in the fastest possible way in .NET . What are the different types of transfer protocols which can be used in .NET or VB.NET so that the files are sent in a very short time ? I have tried using FTP, but that is slow because it requires authentication, handshaking etc. What i want to know is the options which we have in .NET for sending files in the fastest possible way between a server and multiple clients.
