Windows - Default Encoding For System.IO.File.ReadAllText?
Jul 26, 2011
if we don't mention the decoding what decoding will they use?I do not think it's System.Text.Encoding.Default. Things work well if I EXPLICITLY put System.Text.Encoding.Default but things go wrong when I live that empty.So this doesn't work well
Dim b = System.IO.File.ReadAllText("test.txt")
System.IO.File.WriteAllText("test4.txt", b)

I am developing a Door Access Control System which talks the hardware's firmware via TCP/IP. The first version was a success and done using VB6 Winsock Control 6.0. Currently, I am doing the second version in VB.NET and the pain is with the socket. Winsock Control 6.0 is such a blessing (finally admitted) Does anyone know the default encoding of Winsock Control 6.0 in VB6 so that I can set it exactly to the encoding for socket in VB.NET. ANSI (VB.NET) seems to work (but not fully tested with the hardware), but is there something more specific?

We recently came across some sample code from a vendor for hashing a secret key for a web service call, their sample was in VB.NET which we converted to C#. This caused the hashing to produce different input. It turns out the way they were generating the key for the encryption was by converting a char array to a string and back to a byte array. This led me to the discovery that VB.NET and C#'s default encoder work differently with some characters.
C#:
Console.Write(Encoding.Default.GetBytes(new char[] { (char)149 })[0]);
VB:
Dim b As Char() = {Chr(149)}
Console.WriteLine(Encoding.Default.GetBytes(b)(0))
The C# output is 63, while VB is the correct byte value of 149.if you use any other value, like 145, etc, the output matches.Walking through the debugging, both VB and C# default encoder is SBCSCodePageEncoding.I have corrected the sample code by directly initializing a byte array, which it should have been in the first place, but I still want to know why the encoder, which should not be language specific, appears to be just that.

I recently worked on a small-scale EPP Client, which is a communications protocol over TCP/IP using XML packets to exchange commands and responses. The server I'm working with specifically is employing SSL so the code contains references to an SSLStream certificates and passphrases - please don't ask me to post more code than I provide here.We're building the XML EPP Commands in raw System.Strings, then using System.Text.Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes on the string to populate a Byte Array, then writing the Byte Array into the SSLStream. The server would communicate, negotiate certificates, and

Just placed out first Windows 7 PC in to a production environment and noticed that system.file.io gives errors about file not existing when using mapped drives to a network server. I can access the file through Explorer on the PC. When I chnaged the path to UNC using the IP and drive name instead of the mapped drive letter all works fine. Strange thing is for a few days during the testing period the application ran on Win 7 using the mapped drives in the file.io path. Not sure why it stopped working or how it worked in the first place. Question is on Windows 7 it seems like it doesn't like mapped drives in system.file namespace. Is tis true or are there more steps I need to do in addition to this This works as is, but when I change \172....vol1 to r: it bails, hence the thinking Win 7 is stopping the access to mapped drives.

I am using System.IO.FIle.ReadAllText() to get the contents of some template files that I created for email content. Then I want to do a Replace on certain tokens within the files so I can add dynamic content to the template.Here is the code I have, it seems to me like it should work just fine...
Dim confirmUrl As String = Request.ApplicationPath & "?v=" & reg.AuthKey
Dim text As String = IO.File.ReadAllText( _
ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("sign_up_confirm_email_text").Replace("~", _
[code].....
For some reason I cannot get the %%LINK%% and %%NAME%% Replace() calls to work properly. I checked to see if it was encoding-related, so I made each file UTF-8. And also used the forced encoding overload of ReadAllText(String, Encoding) and still no dice.

System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser.Navigate(New Uri("\hostpath ofile.pdf"))
This works fine, but now I have to use a specific user to access this file and I don't know how to include the user name, password and domain in the URI. Is it posible to add user credentials to the URI? Can I use another variant of Navigate method to accomplish this?

We're writing a Windows client application in VB.NET. On the first launch of the application it loads a local HTML file "User Guide" for the user to get acquainted with the new software. There is also a menu option to access the content which also produces the same error. Whenever the page is launched, a dialog box appears stating that "The system could not find the specified file.", and then the browser windows loads the content. This is IE8 specific, as we previously tested with IE6 and 7 as well as Firefox with no problems.
Apparently this behavior is also happening within Outlook 2007 for some of our users whenever they click a link in an email, but only on the first link they click. Also, one condition for the error to appear is that no IE8 window is currently running, otherwise another tab opens and loads the content just fine. We get this error on XP and Vista.
