Read The Whole File With System.IO.File.ReadAllText
Sep 7, 2010
I have a text file with exactly 2 lines! I can read the whole file with System.IO.File.ReadAllText, but this will return both lines! How should I get the 1st and 2nd line separately?

if we don't mention the decoding what decoding will they use?I do not think it's System.Text.Encoding.Default. Things work well if I EXPLICITLY put System.Text.Encoding.Default but things go wrong when I live that empty.So this doesn't work well
Dim b = System.IO.File.ReadAllText("test.txt")
System.IO.File.WriteAllText("test4.txt", b)

I am teaching myself VB.net and have pasted full code, and I want to delete the file called tracertAll.txt but I get an error "in use" message because I am doinga System.IO.File.ReadAllText("tracertALL.txt") but don't know how to release.Here is the code I think is the problem:
Dim MailBody As String
MailBody = System.IO.File.ReadAllText("tracertALL.txt") ' set it to path of the file which you want to read.

I have an application that currently stores PDF files (and others) inside the database as BLOBs. The trouble with this method is that I've now got SQL Server databases in excess of 200 GB! I've finally figured out a way to still enable full-text search without needing to store the PDF files as BLOBs (yay! Adobe's iFilter isn't great.), but I'm having trouble designing the method for a client to get access to the files stored on the server's file system.
I want to place the files in a restricted directory on the server, so I can't simply pass a UNC path to the client and let them open the file from there either in a browser or using Process.Start(filename). I understand how that would work, but if that directory has user access granted, all sorts of security holes open up, right?So, what I'm thinking about is a way to have a SQL Server account that has read/write access to/from the protected file system directory. That way (in my mind), the SQL Server can take a file as it's loaded in through the import client (as a series of byte chunks) and write the file to that area of the filesystem. Then, when a file is requested, the SQL Server can bulk load the file into a varbinary(max) field and do whatever I want with it.
1. How can SQL Server take a stream of bytes and write them to a specified location on its local file system? (This is assuming that I want the import utility to be able to be run on a client machine and not require it to be run on the server itself.)
2. Is there any way to stream a varbinary(max) file to a web page out of SQL? I'm using a lot of PDF files that will have Fast Web View enabled, so if I can stream the bytes to a web page, the user will be able to see the first few pages of the document while the rest is loading. I thought about having the SQL Server read (bulk load) the file from the protected area and write it to an unprotected area just long enough to point a web browser to that location, then wiping the file, but that brings me back to #1 above and would THEN require me to be able to issue a delete command from SQL.

Reading a .txt file in VB.net. My file path is C:UsersMyLilMulePepeDocumentsVisual Studio 2008Projectscurtain_calls.txt.
This is my line of Dim LoanOptionsFile As String = "C:UsersMyLilMulePepeDocumentsVisual Studio 2008Projectscurtain_calls.txt"
I can read the file when I run the program, but how do I write the file path so that someone else can download my program and file and read the file on their system?

I am using System.IO.FIle.ReadAllText() to get the contents of some template files that I created for email content. Then I want to do a Replace on certain tokens within the files so I can add dynamic content to the template.Here is the code I have, it seems to me like it should work just fine...
Dim confirmUrl As String = Request.ApplicationPath & "?v=" & reg.AuthKey
Dim text As String = IO.File.ReadAllText( _
ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("sign_up_confirm_email_text").Replace("~", _
[code].....
For some reason I cannot get the %%LINK%% and %%NAME%% Replace() calls to work properly. I checked to see if it was encoding-related, so I made each file UTF-8. And also used the forced encoding overload of ReadAllText(String, Encoding) and still no dice.

I need to write data to a file, preferably in binary format, but I am unaccustomed with the concept. Where's the easiest place to get the basics? I could come here with a specific need, but I'm at the point right now where I am more willing to work within the confines of keeping it simple.
Here's what I know:
1. how to open a new file
2. how to specify the record length
3. how to close the file
Some specific questions:
Does the record length have to be constant throughout the file?
Can I read the nth record without reading the whole file?

I am working on a VB Console Application that takes an Autocad drawing type DWG and converts it to a PDF using a shell command that calls a third party application. In this case, acmecadconverter.exe from www.dwgtool.com. Then the PDF that is created needs a unique watermark, so I call a second application for that called pdftk.exe from www.accesspdf.com/pdftk/.
Everything works as intended, except when I try file names that contain spaces. The file system object does not tolerate spaces in the drawing file name. For instance, the following command gives me a system.io.filenotfoundexception...
My.Computer.FileSystem.RenameFile("Test Flowchart1.dwg", "Test~Flowchart1.dwg")
It's the same problem for all of my File System commands. Either file not found or invalid arguments.
The complete script I'm using is here:
Code:
Sub Main()
Dim arrArgs() As String = Command.Split(","), _
i As Integer, folderPath As String, myPart As String, _

I am teaching myself vb.net and wanted to change this code to have an embedded mail.boby from a text file instead of the file attachment. Code spippet below and where I need help is mail.Body = ("tracertALL.txt")
that just puts the name of the file NOT the contents of the file. This code is a CMDWrapper that runs a batch file and I want the contents of a trace route that is pipe to a file >> tracertALL.txt .

What my program does is load a file (password list), then progressively reads each line of text in the file whilst writing each line to a new file. After X amount of lines have been written, it should start writing the lines of text to a new document until the initial password list has been split into X amount of password lists. The problem I have is that after hours of tweaking, all I can get it to do is write either blank ocuments, or write all of the lines to only one file. I really need it to be able to split into multiple files, preferably at runtime rather than loading a whole text document into the program in a textbox or array then writing it to new files.Below is the source:

Imports System.Windows.Forms
Imports System.IO

I've gone through about 16 hours and two packs of cigarettes trying to figure this out. First a little background. I was using 6.0 up until 2004 when I went to prison. I'm out now, and trying to relearn the trade, using VS 2005. I'm currently porting some 6.0 code from another project, SpyCast Webcam Studio, into VB 8.0. It's disheartening, to say the least. None of the old built-in subs/functions work anymore, so I have to scour the forums to relearn each and every function.The section I'm doing now takes a snapshot from the webcam (Video API --> PictureBox --> Save as Jpeg), then upens the file to upload it to the server via HTTP POST. I've been using this code in SpyCast for years with no trouble, but I spent many hours trying to piece together the right code to open the binary file to read its contents. I pieced together two methods I found around the forums, one using FileStream() though the code I found wasn't for binary files, even though it said it was, so that code doesn't really work. Method two uses Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileOpen() and works better.
Here's the kicker. By the time I run through the rest of the rigamarole of uploading the file, by the time I read it on the webserver, it's *slightly* corrupted. It's a valid Jpeg, no errors, but the picture looks like when I use to watch the Playboy Channel when I was a kid scrambled with weird colors and whatnot. [code] Each "chunk" is basically one "line" of the file. It looks like a single LineInput() return is the text between two carriage returns. Am I correct? I tested this with a flat text file, and it looks true. However, That one input line returns the text or data with the carriage returns *stripped*! ***?!? =( Fine, I have no problem adding my own vbCrLf to each LineInput(), if I were opening text. but this's binary. A character could be Chr(10) or Chr(13), both of which are removed from the original file contents.So I could very well need to use something other than LineInput(), but I haven't found any other examples on the web using this method.

I need to implement a routine to read a plain text file, BUT that file has a predefined format.The file format is as follows:
Quote:
<FILE_PROPERTIES> 'The "< >" also appears
Propertie1="String" 'It's possible to have spaces after or before the "="
Propertie2="String"
Propertie3="String"
PropertieN="String"
[code]....
Is there any Windows API Routine to read something like that?Or could you point me an URL where something is implemented?I don't want a procedure to read the file line by line and comparing them with Line Input because blank spaces, empty lines and comments starting with " // " may appear too, and I don't want to take them into account, but also I need to save changes to the file, but only to the modified section, without having to read the whole file, and re-write it completely.
Binary access can't work, because I don't know what's the size of each "section", since the number of elements into it can change.
I need something like the "ReadINI" Windows API Procedure, but allowing me to read the "[XXX]" sections headers, and also the "<XXX>" file title header.

Before I begin I would like to mention that I am not a noob in VB, it's just I've never had to do anything this complex before. Basically what I want is to have a program that you can load a txt file in, have it copy key words, and paste it in a textbox so I can use it later on. So in this text file, there is a bunch of info, but I am only needing a certain part. Here is an example of a text file (actually a .dat file, but is easily read):

I'm using Visual Basic express 2008.The application I am working on is the first major project I have ever undertook with visual basics. The application is a launcher for a private server for world of warcraft.I have a menu bar that pulls the file path of the wow.exe and puts it in a hidden textbox, I then have another option that saves this text to c:wowexe.txt. All of this works GREAT!
How can I read the .txt file to end and return the information stored in the .txt file to this line of code.
Dim RetVal
RetVal = Shell("This is where I need the data from the .txt file to be seen", 1)
If your wondering why I don't just type in the path of the .exe, it's simple, not everyone installs World of Warcraft on the C drive.

You'll get a lot of extra information.Now I have a few questions about this.
1.Can this information even be read in VB.NET
2.If so how
3.If not do I need to create some kind of data file to store the file information

A text file exists on my server machine which is constantly being updated (about once about 5 seconds). On my web page, I'd like a div to display this file live using jQuery inside MVC.
I have the jQuery timer working already, but the file isn't displaying. My plan was to get the jQuery to load a Controller Action every 5 seconds and have this action return a FilePathResult.
The script:
$(function () {
var streamer = $("div.wrapper div.streamer");
//===
[Code]....
LiveStreamPath contains the path to the text file. I was thinking of creating a StreamReader in the Action instead. What sorts of implementations can I use to get this file to stream?
