Asp.net Mvc - Asynchronously Streaming A File System Text File Using JQuery (MVC)
Oct 28, 2011
A text file exists on my server machine which is constantly being updated (about once about 5 seconds). On my web page, I'd like a div to display this file live using jQuery inside MVC.
I have the jQuery timer working already, but the file isn't displaying. My plan was to get the jQuery to load a Controller Action every 5 seconds and have this action return a FilePathResult.
The script:
$(function () {
var streamer = $("div.wrapper div.streamer");
//===
[Code]....
LiveStreamPath contains the path to the text file. I was thinking of creating a StreamReader in the Action instead. What sorts of implementations can I use to get this file to stream?

I have following code:
Dim fs As FileStream
fs = New FileStream(path, FileMode.Create)
Dim sw As StreamWriter
sw = New StreamWriter(os)
sw.Write(something)
sw.Flush()
Is this a correct way to do this? Do i need to put in some checks to see if file exists?

I'm trying to make a program in vb 2008 that is like a Quiz that reads questions from a different file and displays them in a label in the program. The program also reads 4 multiple choice into radio buttons. There is a next button that switches the answers and questions (reads them from a file) and displays them onto a label.

I want to upload a large file of tracking numbers and process them into our ordering system.
I used to use Server.ScriptTimeout = 3000
It worked until we upgraded our servers and now it crashes.
I'm Getting This webpage is not available The connection to www.YourSite.com was interrupted.
I could see the .csv file has been uploaded, but many tracking numbers do not get processed.
I'm thinking of maybe switching to a asynchronous update. But I cannot find any good source for it.
If you have any good ideas, please let me know.

I have this problem in VB.NET in c#, I have this project where I need to run a batch file, which is easy enough. But my problem is I need to display everything that shows up on the batch file, in the cmd window, in a textbox, now, this code opens the file no problem:
System.Diagnostics.Process proc = new System.Diagnostics.Process();
proc.EnableRaisingEvents = false
proc.StartInfo.FileName = "C:\Users\jwoow\Desktop\Server\run.bat";
proc.Start().ToString();
but it doesn't move the code over to the textbox, this code transfers the last displayed line, but not the entire thing of the batch file and it also closes the cmd window, i need it to stay open:
Process p = new Process();
p.StartInfo.UseShellExecute = false;
p.StartInfo.RedirectStandardOutput = true;
[code]....
the batch file is for a server, it displays the amt of users on it (updates ever 2 minutes) and shows different events taken by the users. so it is constantly updating.

I am working on a VB Console Application that takes an Autocad drawing type DWG and converts it to a PDF using a shell command that calls a third party application. In this case, acmecadconverter.exe from www.dwgtool.com. Then the PDF that is created needs a unique watermark, so I call a second application for that called pdftk.exe from www.accesspdf.com/pdftk/.
Everything works as intended, except when I try file names that contain spaces. The file system object does not tolerate spaces in the drawing file name. For instance, the following command gives me a system.io.filenotfoundexception...
My.Computer.FileSystem.RenameFile("Test Flowchart1.dwg", "Test~Flowchart1.dwg")
It's the same problem for all of my File System commands. Either file not found or invalid arguments.
The complete script I'm using is here:
Code:
Sub Main()
Dim arrArgs() As String = Command.Split(","), _
i As Integer, folderPath As String, myPart As String, _
[Code].....

We had a wierd problem at work.SOmeone at finance tried to import a text file into their system. It complained about the textfile was in unicode format. The file contains scandinavian . Apparently the ERP system that exported the file can only handle unicode.So one of our junior programmers wrote a batch program that line by line converted the unicode file to ascii (you can't choose encoding.ANSI because ANSI is byte array)
The files are rather big, about 3 GB in size.Apparently the system liked ASCII files, but sadly after this processing the and was gone and replaced with ?So, he wrote a new batch program, this time replacing m?nad with mnad using String.Replace The file was opened using Encoding.Default and saved using Encoding.Ascii.Now the files HAVE AND can be imported. After he explained this to me, I just went . I wish I had some nifty "you should have done this... bla bla its much easier" but I am lost here in the jungle of code pages and encodings. Can someone that has their head screwed on straight enlight us *both* about why we had this problem and how it could be handled without writing the second batch program?
Basically unicode->non unicode (ascii) with the intact. I also noticed that if I use streamreader to read an ansi file with the internal strings will show ? instead.

This question is a following from another question I asked - Passing client data to server to create Excel or CSV File. I have a client page which builds a JSON object to send to the server, and I have server code which can parse that JSON object into an SQL command and end up with a dataset of required data.
I had originally been passing the JSON object to an .asmx web service which would return a JSON object containing my data. Now I want to go in a different direction and have the data returned as a .csv file.
I understand I can try to put my JSON object into a query string and call my .ashx page, but the JSON object could get large, so I'm trying to use the Request.Form of a POST.
My question, and lack of understanding, is in how to use jQuery to post to the .ashx page and have it return the .csv file to the client. If I navigate to the .ashx page directly (and modify the page to hard code the passed data), I get the .csv file returned to me no problem (i.e I get the prompt to open/save the file). If I make a POST to the .ashx file from jQuery and send my JSON object through, I get a response which contains the data in a string, rather than getting a .csv.
So, is there something I am missing, or am I just trying to achieve something that I can't or shouldn't be doing? I'd thought about passing my JSON object to a .asmx web service which would store the JSON object into a database and return an ID, and then use window.location to browse to the .ashx with the ID as a query string parameter to then generate the .csv file, but I thought there might be a way to avoid that middle step and do it with the POST.

my problem is that my company does not want to serve up the .json MIME type, so I have to use ASP.NET to fetch the JSON file from the file server. Currently I have jQuery that does a getJSON and traverses the JSON object to build certain elements of the page. Is there a way I can use ASP.NET (VB) to give the object to my jQuery script after I fetch it?

I need to parse a Unix text file so, I am using System.Net.WebClient to ftp into a Unix server then using the .DownloadFile() method to get the text file, but its coming in with the Unix end line ""; so is there a way to convert that to windows format while doing the DownloadFile method? I do re-read it after and fix it, I am just looking for a better way.
Or is there an alternate such as instead of a DownloadFile, and the two other steps above can I just read it into an array right off the Unix server?? If so then what method would I use?

We have a site that is public facing, let's say it's [URL]. When the SSL is implemented, [URL], I can no longer access the jQuery 1.4.3 file on my own server. Furthermore, after a tweak to the security setting, I was able to get past the 'Access is Denied' error, but the first call was null. I understand there is a problem with different protocols actually being within the scope of the cross-domain problem? Is that true? And if so, will this now require JSONP?

I'm creating a reporting web page as part of a standard VB.NET web application. The page is data driven, with jquery making calls to a web service local to the application to get values of elements that are dynamically created in the DOM. Ultimately these dynamic elements and their values are all wrapped up in a JSON object, so that part of the client side is fine.
Right now, I can pass that JSON object to a method in the web service which creates an SQL Data adapter from the values and queries a database. My ultimate goal is to have this client JSON data be used to query the database and construct an excel file to send back to the user, or failing that a CSV file.
It's my understanding (from working with PDF file generation) that this type of function can only be done on the server side of the web application, not even from the web service (i.e. I can't have the web service return an array of bytes and have JavaScript/jQuery present that as a file).
So, how do I go about this? Now I have my JSON object on the client side, where should I be sending it, how, and how do I go about returning my file?
I've read about either storing the JSON in a hidden field and having the server take the elements value and go from there, or using AJAX to send the JSON to the server just before a postback is made to fire off the server-side function to run the query and return the data.
I just need a little guidance, and a little help understanding where to use the hidden field, or what I am actually doing with the pre-postback AJAX call.

I am trying to create a log file which I am going to use to populate some controls (DataGridView or Treeview). I am trying to figure out if should use text files or XML files to do so. Effectively the log will highlight multiple phases in a client-side app. The log will be written to at various phases when the project is running. The user will always have the options move on to the next phase or save progress and exit the project. As such, I want the log file to highlight how far the user has progressed throught the various phases AND I want the log to highlight varous information from each phase. Whenever the user starts the project, they will be given the option to load existing log files. So the project will have to read these log files and append them where necessary as the user progresses.
I am not sure what the best way to do this is and below is a rudimentary approach using text files. As you can see, the top of the file would have a summary of all the phases and whether or not the user completed each phase. Next each phase would have a data section highlighting what data was stored along the way. I have used a ":" to denote each section. Then within each section I would obviously need to use a delimeter for all my data. So if Phase1 = True, then I would load all the pertinent data from "Phase1:" into the desired control. Can anyone provide an efficient way of doing this and provide some insight as to whether I should use XML instead. The phases my change during development and I am not sure yet which controls I will be using. Does XML provide more flexibility.
In summary I am looking to create, read/write and append log files and populate controls with the data in varous sections of the log file. Example:
Phase1 = True
Phase2 = True
Phase3 = False
Phase4 = False
