Jun 13, 2009I am developing a Door Access Control System which talks the hardware's firmware via TCP/IP. The first version was a success and done using VB6 Winsock Control 6.0. Currently, I am doing the second version in VB.NET and the pain is with the socket. Winsock Control 6.0 is such a blessing (finally admitted) Does anyone know the default encoding of Winsock Control 6.0 in VB6 so that I can set it exactly to the encoding for socket in VB.NET. ANSI (VB.NET) seems to work (but not fully tested with the hardware), but is there something more specific?

May 29, 2009We recently came across some sample code from a vendor for hashing a secret key for a web service call, their sample was in VB.NET which we converted to C#. This caused the hashing to produce different input. It turns out the way they were generating the key for the encryption was by converting a char array to a string and back to a byte array. This led me to the discovery that VB.NET and C#'s default encoder work differently with some characters.
C#:
Console.Write(Encoding.Default.GetBytes(new char[] { (char)149 })[0]);
VB:
Dim b As Char() = {Chr(149)}
Console.WriteLine(Encoding.Default.GetBytes(b)(0))
The C# output is 63, while VB is the correct byte value of 149.if you use any other value, like 145, etc, the output matches.Walking through the debugging, both VB and C# default encoder is SBCSCodePageEncoding.I have corrected the sample code by directly initializing a byte array, which it should have been in the first place, but I still want to know why the encoder, which should not be language specific, appears to be just that.

String Encoding And File Writing
Oct 16, 2011I have a long UTF8 encoded text string. The actual values stored in the string are hexadecimal. I want to convert the encoding and save to a binary file.
Is there a simple encoding.convert or other method to do this with?
Basically the output is twice as large as it needs to be right now. The long way of doing it would be a routine to go through the string two characters at a time and convert to byte array and then .writeallbytes I guess. It seems there must be a simpler way of converting this?

May 27, 2009I've been working with a sig capture application sample on a windows mobile device, The data is sent via IP to a host as a byte array and is then drawn onto the screen of the host as it appeared on the client. I was able to get this into the form of a bitmap object so I could print it or save to a jpg file. That all works well. The problem now is that I need to store this data in a database and then be able to recall it at a later time and recreate the signature image.
The byte array data is much smaller than the actual image so I would like to store it in that form. My issue is that when I convert this byte array into a string and back again my program can no longer re-create the image. Once I saw the problem I created the code below as a test and added the msgboxes to get an idea what was happened to my data.

So, when the datatable is binded to the datagrid, I can see the picture, if present, and the red cross if is not presente. So I can remove the red cross, by assign a value to the DefaultValue property of the datacolumn. But what default value I've to assign?? I tried with system.dbnull.value but the red cross is still present.

Mar 9, 2012We have a legacy component that has been converted from VB6 to VB.Net.The VB component was called from an ASPX page using Request("param") to pass optional parameters to function calls. That means the value is null/nothing if the parameter is not present.The parameters were then added to an ADODB call of a store procedure using Parameters.Append.When used from VB6 missing, Request("param") values were coerced into empty strings when passed to the VB6 component. This meant that the ADODB call was satisfied (for required parameters).When the code was ported to VB.Net, the null Request("param") values are now passed as null values (VB nothing?) and Parameters.Append skips adding the value if it is nothing. This caused the stored procedure calls to break as a required param was missing.
If we change the component's function parameters to be optional and have paramname as string = "" defaults, will a null/nothing value be converted to an empty string, or is null/nothing treated differently to a parameter being simply missing?

but value contains an empty string I confes to being a VB n00b, less than a week, in fact, but I can't see what's wrong there. The file exists, it contains a section called "Config" which has an entry called "UserName" with a value - but even if not, wouldn't value take the default?
Edit: It's not returning an empty string - it's returning whatever I initialize value to before calling GetPrivateProfileString().
Which is to say that if I Dim value As String = "xxx" then it stil contains "xxx" after the call and not the default value.

Is that 'encoded' in memory in a particular format? Does that format depend on what language I'm using?
If I were in another country, like China, for example, and I had a string of Chinese (mandarin? My apologies if I'm using the wrong words here) would the following code (that I've used fine on English strings) still work the same?

Or would it lose all meaning when you convert that .Net string to a UTF8Encoding when that conversion isn't valid?
Finally, I've worked with .Net for a few years now and I've never seen, heard, or had to do anything with Encoding. Am I the exception, or is it not a common thing to do?
