Im trying to use File.ReadAllLines to read a DLL that has plain text. (the DLL is basically a text file)

Problem is, text lines include ANSI characters above ASCII value 127 (Scandinavian letters e.g. " (Ascii 196), (Ascii 246) and (Ascii 233). Array is build up nicely, but all chars above ascii value 127 are not shown right. How can I use ANSI character set with .ReadAllLines to correct this problem? In VB6 with "Open Filename For Input As #1 / Line Input #1, txtLine" there wasn't any problem. OBS: This is already solved, found the answer by myself:

And i have afew ideas like using the split function and stuff to read the months but can i use the "|" and "," in the line at the same time? the first 3 section of the line is for user to know the year, month and day of the starting date of the chinese lunar year. and the following 1,30 is the first month with 30days.

Is there a way to use ReadAllLines to read in a text file that contains some Chr(10) (linefeeds) but uses ONLY the Chr(13) (carriage return) as the true end-of-line?What I mean is, DON'T treat a Chr(10) as the EOL. ONLY treat a Chr(13) as the EOL.Obviously I could just read in the whole file as binary and then split it into lines by scanning for Chr(13), but I just wondered whether or not there's a setting in VB.NET to set the EOL character so I didn't have to do that.

I want to search the entire file for a particular string eg, "apple" and for all lines containing the string to be printed in a text box. have successfully done this using streamReader to parse the CSV and check each element against the search word eg. apple. This has proven to be very very slow and I have read that the "ReadAllLines" method is much faster.

I do not want to use readalllines kind of function because it's too slow for large files.
I do not want to read the whole file to the memory. I want the program to handle only a medium chunk of data at a time.
I need to read and process a text file. My processing would be easier if I could use the File.ReadAllLines method but I'm not sure what is the maximum size of the file that could be read with this method without reading by chunks. I understand that the file size depends on the computer memory. But are still there any recommendations for an average machine?

Alright here's my situation: I have a form. This is a very small form that can be moved with the mouse (formborderstyle=none). The transparencyKey is 0,0,1. The form back color is 0,0,1. There is a label on the form. I drag files to this label(its backcolor is black[0,0,0]). What I want is for the filesize to be checked. I want my program to be able to create a '.txt' file when it is run for the first time, with the date and time the program was accessed, and to be able to add new 'logs' of program history every time it is accessed. What i mean is that i want my program to be able to create a '.txt' file, and then fill in the dates and times when the program is opened.

View 10 RepliesI'm looking for a way to specify the location for the User.config file that is used for storing the My.Settings object. It appears that this is not possible. The problem for me is, I don't want to be responsible for creating several different files on the users computer that really have no use and are difficult to find and clean once an update is released. For most users, this is not a serious problem, as many will probably never update the software, and most will probably only go through a couple of updates. On my system, there are config files for every build of the application, and the same to a lesser extent will be true for my beta testers.
I can understand that MS wants to make sure that no two applications will use the same location for storing application data, but a simple [UserData] [CompanyName][ApplicationName] for storing application data will probably suffice for 99.9999 percent of the legitimate applications in the world. Bogging a user's system down with erroneous files, no matter how small, is an unnecessary drain on system resources and a potential source of problems for the user. It's bad enough that most programs leave bits and pieces of themselves all over a user's system after De-installation - this to me seems only to exaggerate this problem.
Is the only way to get around this problem to write a whole new Settings Class? Is there a way to change the location of the UserConfig file to a more friendly (and more predictable) location that I am not finding for myself? It would seem that having at least the OPTION to specify a location for the User.Config file would be OBVIOUS and easy to implement, so why did they leave this out?
I am trying to run a fortran .exe in VB with the Shell() command. The fortran .exe, when ran, it asks you for a file name. It works perfectly on it's own, but when I try calling it through VB Shell(), it does not work.. (i.e. I cannot get VB to get the file name in it.)
Added info:I am using VB9 but I'm writing in compatibility to .NET. As for the Fortran .exe, when you call it, it opens a command window where it asks for a file name (which I got as a string in VB and I'm trying to pass it in), then you press Enter and it's done. Basically the .exe takes a text file and creates a new text file. We've also tried adding & mystring when calling the exe, but it gives a "file not found" error.

I'm having a slight problem getting my program to load a save file when double clicking the save file.I'm using the Command$() to get the command line argument. I can open a save file by dragging it onto the exe. But not by double clicking the save file (after it's associated with the exe).I though dragging and dropping a file on a program and double clicking the file would open it in the same way, but I guess not.So in short how does file association work and how do I get the file path set to a var when the program loads.

Ok here we go again, im a complete beginner to coding and have started with visual studio 2008 using the .net/vb libraries, as my first project i went with an emulation application, and it went great:So now i think its time to move onto a little more advanced tech's, so i added in a combo box and i want to change how my code works, and this is where my troubles are.To start of with the combo box, i have it added to my winform and have 3 items on it 'Action' 'RPG' and 'Sim' and i have made 3 .txt files in the projects root folder with the same names. What i want to have happen is when the user selects for instance 'RPG' from the combo box the items displayed in the listbox change to the contents of the rpg.txt file. After searching around for a few hours and no luck i tried this
