Oct 18, 2009
Im trying to use File.ReadAllLines to read a DLL that has plain text. (the DLL is basically a text file) [code] The process cannot access the file '****DebugNewFile.DLL' because it is being used by another process.How do I use readalllines to find text? How do I use readalllines to only search a part of the text file?

I need to implement a routine to read a plain text file, BUT that file has a predefined format.The file format is as follows:
Quote:
<FILE_PROPERTIES> 'The "< >" also appears
Propertie1="String" 'It's possible to have spaces after or before the "="
Propertie2="String"
Propertie3="String"
PropertieN="String"
[code]....
Is there any Windows API Routine to read something like that?Or could you point me an URL where something is implemented?I don't want a procedure to read the file line by line and comparing them with Line Input because blank spaces, empty lines and comments starting with " // " may appear too, and I don't want to take them into account, but also I need to save changes to the file, but only to the modified section, without having to read the whole file, and re-write it completely.
Binary access can't work, because I don't know what's the size of each "section", since the number of elements into it can change.
I need something like the "ReadINI" Windows API Procedure, but allowing me to read the "[XXX]" sections headers, and also the "<XXX>" file title header.

I have a text file (CSV) approx 100k lines (8Mb). I want to search the entire file for a particular string eg, "apple" and for all lines containing the string to be printed in a text box. have successfully done this using streamReader to parse the CSV and check each element against the search word eg. apple. This has proven to be very very slow and I have read that the "ReadAllLines" method is much faster.

I'm using IO.File.ReadAllLines(FileName) to read all lines from text file to array of strings at once. Problem is, text lines include ANSI characters above ASCII value 127 (Scandinavian letters e.g. "Ä" (Ascii 196), "ö" (Ascii 246) and "é" (Ascii 233). Array is build up nicely, but all chars above ascii value 127 are not shown right. How can I use ANSI character set with .ReadAllLines to correct this problem? In VB6 with "Open Filename For Input As #1 / Line Input #1, txtLine" there wasn't any problem.

I'm trying to use VB.NET to process a very large plain text file (2 GB). It is a database and has a field delimiter of SOH and a record delimiter of STX.
I want to separate the fields and records of the file.
I would normally read each line of a text file and then use the split function to separate out the fields. I can't use this approach as there isn't always a delimiter on every line.
Is there any way to read a file until STX is found (rather than one line at a time)?

I'm sort of new to VB and have to use it for my Software Design & Development Major Project.I'm making a blackJack game, and i the names of all users in a file called "CurrentUserNames.txt".I'm struggling to get VB to read this file (items are line by line not separated by a comma or something) and then save it into an array called CurrentUsers(). This array is then displayed in a listbox called "lstAllUsers".I can get VB to read the file and put the FIRST item in the file into the FIRST line of the list box, or i can get VB to put ALL the items in the file into the listbox, separated by the little [] squares when the program runs e.g listbox, line 1 says - "Current [][] Names".[code]

how to do this for vb6 however i am using vb 2008 and the code for vb6 does not seem to work.
I have designed a form with a text box on it, and a command button underneath. The idea is to run this as a sort of stiky notes section.
I want the text box to read rich text into the textbox (C:\\stickynotes.rtf")
Then i have a command button underneath which i want to save the content of the rich text box to the rtf file (C:\\stickynotes.rtf). This is so that the user can edit and ammend information.
here is some code i have so far
Dim fileReader As System.IO.StreamReader
fileReader = My.Computer.FileSystem.OpenTextFileReader("C:\\stickynotes.rtf")

I am learning Visual Basic and I have learned alot of it from the learning section included in Visual Basic Express Edition 2008 but I don't think I have learned alot. I am actually trying to make an extractor and importer for a game. I have the file called Frontened.MNG and I want to make a program that can open the file. Someone else had made the rxtractor but he doesn't have it now. The Frontened.MNG file contains bunch of .DDS files and I want to view them in the program and then be able to replace the .DDS files in the >MNG file and be able to Extract the files out of the .MNG file. I don't just want anyone to do it for me but teach me how to do it step by step. First I want to know is how to view the .MNG file in VB? It should be viewed in a listbox but I don't know how to read this file in VB. I know how to read a text file but I think this is a binary file and it is viewed differently.

31231212121211

and import it into vb, splitting it into four digits and putting each set of four digits into a different text box.

I ran across my first unicode data, and I am not sure what to do with it. I read the unicode text from a binary file using the ReadBytes method, because ReadChars threw an exception when it tried it. Well, long story short, I have found a way to work with the data, I can convert it using a small Function I wrote, which goes something like this: [Code] And this works wonderfully. It just throws away anything not in the ASCII range, including the BOM at the start of the unicode data.
But I would guess that this method is not very universal and probably not the best way. Are there any VB functions available to do this sort of thing? I was able to find something called Text.Encoding, but there didn't seem to be a reverse of that not that I found anyhow. Any ideas?

Problem was to find right character set, which was Windows-1251 (ISO-8859-1)

Is there a way to use ReadAllLines to read in a text file that contains some Chr(10) (linefeeds) but uses ONLY the Chr(13) (carriage return) as the true end-of-line?What I mean is, DON'T treat a Chr(10) as the EOL. ONLY treat a Chr(13) as the EOL.Obviously I could just read in the whole file as binary and then split it into lines by scanning for Chr(13), but I just wondered whether or not there's a setting in VB.NET to set the EOL character so I didn't have to do that.

I read a csv file into my .net program using ado.net and display it in a datagridview.In the file I have two rows. The first column is a component id, and it is supposed to be numeric. But the user can edit the csv file before having my program load it, and accidentally put text there. That is something I want to edit when he presses a button to add the data to the database. So let's say he puts a value of A in the first record and a value of 1 in the second record. Or vice versa. What is displayed in the dgv is a blank in the first record and a 1 in the second, or 1 in first and blank in second. If both csv records are A, then what is displayed in the dgv is an A in both the first and second records. I don't understand what is happening. The fact that there sometimes is a numeric in the column makes it think it is a numeric field and therefore only display numerics and blank otherwise, and the fact that there's always text in the column makes the code know it is a text field?
