Is there a way to get a list of programs from the registry?
[Code]...
I'd like to mention that getting a list of the installed programs via the registry is not a viable way to receive a full an accurate list. The two main areas where the programs in the registry are stored, are mainly MS programs. Some manufacturers put their keys here as well, but most don't. And since it's impossible to know where the manufacturer has stored the key, let alone the name of the key that would give the list and the uninstall capability, it's not ideal to use the registry.
That being said, I was told that there is a COM API that Microsoft has made and uses in the Windows OS and was hoping someone knew what that API is and how to maybe implement it in VB.
I'm currently using the following to code to grab the installed programs and list them in a ListView:
vb.net
Dim SoftwareKey As String = "SOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInstallerUserDataS-1-5-18Products"
Using rk As RegistryKey = Registry.LocalMachine.OpenSubKey(SoftwareKey)
For Each skName In rk.GetSubKeyNames
[Code] .....
What I don't understand is when I run the code, I get a NullReferenceException was Handled on this line:
vb.net
If name.ToString <> "" Then
I haven't been able to find much on the error. It seems like it is a pretty generic one and can fit into a lot of different scenarios.
I want to know exact path to All programs in the registry. Im creating an my own installer and i want my installer to add program to All programs in the START->All Programs. I browse the registry i found this "SOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInstallerUserDataS-1-5-18Products" but im not sure because it doesnt show program name , only it show 32 hexadecimal, then when i click on each hexadecimal, i got 4 subkeytree, FEATURES, INSTALLPROPERTIES,PATCHES,USAGE. In installproperties, i find information programs on my computer. if that is the path, how is the hexadecimal number generated.

View 1 RepliesI am trying to add icons to a listview that would contain a list of programs added by the user. I am pulling my hair out over this. I had the solution a few days ago and then I decided to go in another direction and then cleared my browser history. I have searched for that code for awhile now to no avail. how do i write to the windows registry and read from the registry?i'm using windows 7 - 64 bits, and visual studio 2008.
View 1 RepliesI am sure this can be done, as Visual Studio is basically built this way. What I want to do is simply make a class that my other workmates can use. But rather than have it in a code form, I want to build it (partially), and then my workmate can add it into their programs (sort of, like the add reference for the .NET stuff).
View 4 RepliesI want to get all sub keys in a reg location. This entry can also have additional sub keys.At location "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTexefile" this key as 3 subkeys and 2 of these keys have additional sub keys under them. I need to get all the keys and any additional sub keys under each key if there is any. This code will be used for other keys, so I can not assume they have subkeys.
Dim Key As RegistryKey = Registry.ClassesRoot.OpenSubKey("exefile", False)
Dim SubKeyNames() As String = Key.GetSubKeyNames()
Dim Index As Integer

View 4 RepliesIs there a way to get a list of files in a certain directory and then put them in a context menu strip then when they are clicked have the program open the file. I'm trying to make a flash player that can show the list of flash files and when you click the file path on the context menu strip it will play from that file. Here is what I have:
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
OpenFileDialog1.Filter = "Shockwave Flash Objects (*.swf)|*.swf|All files (*.*)|*.*"
[code].....
I need to get a list of registry keys. I have a key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARECBV
In there I have a couple of more keys that I need to list. After that I'll be able to get the subkeys easily.
I've looked and the only call that seems to do this is RegOpenKeyEx. Is there a better or more up to date method that I can use?
I've looked at My.Computer.Registry.LocalMachine and can only see methods to get the subkeys and not keys.
I have made this installation program and everything work just fine, but I wish to improve it a little. Atm. all the files being installed is in a seperate folder, and the installation program simply move them to the right location. There is a builder program too.I would like it to add all files from a list to the programs resource.folder instead of a seperate folder.Atm I add the installation file to the destination folder with the following line. [code]
View 2 RepliesI can't find any way of loading all files with e.g (.txt) from a specific directory: C:UsersChristianDocumentsMy Logs I use Visual Basic 2008 .NET, this is how I try to get it:
1. When the form loads it should retrieve the full path and title of the files and then put them in the List View control.
2. When the user marks one file in the list view and then clicks a button the text content should be displayed in a multi line textbox.

View 1 RepliesWhen you've finished a program and you're trying to distribute it to the mass public. How is the best way to go about doing this? What sites would you post your program on and getting the word out that there is a new program on the block and it does xyz. This is directed to freeware so there wouldn't be any advertising.
Sorry for not explaining it very well the first time.
I am trying to move my programs from VB6 to VB 2008 Express. My initial problen is with getting data from my Jet database. I've searched for samples but haven't been able to find anything to help me. I would like to be migrate the Jet database to the vb 2008 system.
View 3 RepliesI have a Windows Form Application which has been developed in vb.net 3.5. It is a charting program and shows stock market charts to users. Now I have made another program in vb.net (same .net version) and I want this program to interact with the one I made before. The new program is like a small scripting language. So for example: if I run a script then its output should be reflected in the other program. How can the two programs communicate ? Both will be running on same systems. No remote stuff. I mean passing arrays, strings or possibly structures.
Plus I have several functions which are written in first program. Is it possible for the other program which is an .exe also to call the functions of the other one if I make sub/function public or something. The reason is we can calls functions or subs if we include a dll. But can one exe calls functions/sub of another exe (if both program are in .net).
the only way I can get reading from an instrument is through proprietary software. even though it is connected with USB. the instrument - a Cary 500, with a GPIB interface.the problem is with instrument commands, like "reset" or "change wavelength" or "instrument reading" They reside inside a primitive Basic shell provided by the instrument software. I'm looking at expencive National Instruments, is there another solution with VS/NET?
View 3 RepliesThey are all working on my computer, but they are not working on any other computer(I tested it on about 10 computers). They are working when i start making it,but after they are not working. When i try to run it on other computer it is not opening(there is not any error message), or there is a crash report(application crashes). So they are working on beginning of programming, and after they aren't.
View 1 RepliesI know there are compatibility problems with 32 bit code running on 64 bit machines, but this doesnt seem like it should happen.
