I am trying to add icons to a listview that would contain a list of programs added by the user. I am pulling my hair out over this. I had the solution a few days ago and then I decided to go in another direction and then cleared my browser history. I have searched for that code for awhile now to no avail. I'd like to mention that getting a list of the installed programs via the registry is not a viable way to receive a full an accurate list. The two main areas where the programs in the registry are stored, are mainly MS programs. Some manufacturers put their keys here as well, but most don't. And since it's impossible to know where the manufacturer has stored the key, let alone the name of the key that would give the list and the uninstall capability, it's not ideal to use the registry.
That being said, I was told that there is a COM API that Microsoft has made and uses in the Windows OS and was hoping someone knew what that API is and how to maybe implement it in VB.

I'm currently using the following to code to grab the installed programs and list them in a ListView:
vb.net
Dim SoftwareKey As String = "SOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInstallerUserDataS-1-5-18Products"
Using rk As RegistryKey = Registry.LocalMachine.OpenSubKey(SoftwareKey)
For Each skName In rk.GetSubKeyNames
[Code] .....
What I don't understand is when I run the code, I get a NullReferenceException was Handled on this line:
vb.net
If name.ToString <> "" Then
I haven't been able to find much on the error. It seems like it is a pretty generic one and can fit into a lot of different scenarios.

This may seem like a silly question, but where do you find the icons that you use for your programs? I know there are tons of resources online that can be used but it seems that most are hardly "professional".

I need to list all icons in the system tray (compatibility is only necessary with Windows Vista) programatically using VB.NET. I've tried a ton of googling and forum searching but have discovered applicable code only in C++ or Delphi - I don't understand either well enough to interpret.
This open-source project [URL].. is an exceptional example of what I need to do but I can't figure out how to translate much more than the p/invoke signatures to vb.It's also worth noting that I don't need to control the icons (i.e. hide, destroy), just be able to populate a list of them with information such as their parent process, tooltip text, the actual icon, and it would be really great if it's possible to "see"
the tray's menu options too so they could be exposed through the vb program.
I'm not asking for anyone to write my code for me but a step in the right direction would be a great help. I'm a fast learner; just having problems getting myself headed down the right path here.

I have created an shareware application using vb.net visual studio 2008 for windows desktop, and packaged it using innosetup 5.3.8. The problem is when i have installed the application in C:Program FilesApplication and it runs successfully(use trial period of the application), Im also able to install the application once again freshly with the same setup by installing in different directory.eg C:Program FilesApplication new . The application in C:Program FilesApplication new does not have any settings of the already installed one.
Where do i went wrong . Do i need to take care of this in my application(vb.net) or innosetup. How to take care of the already installed path in innosetup or carry the settings of already installed application to newly installed path by upgrading the older one.
I dont want to write any thing in registry because the application does not want any administrative permission requirements. If i install the application in same path it gets updated with the older settings being taken over to this new one and it works fine.

I need to obtain a list of desktop icons and add them to a ListView. I'm currently doing this:
[code]...
It points to the direct path the icons should be located under the user profile. However, for some reason I've yet to determine, not all of the icons are in this directory.

I have an application that I'm creating that uses VB6 for the maintenance programs, and visual studio 2005 to create the reports. At work we use reporting services to host the reports, but in my application I want to run the report from a menu within the application, not in reporting services. (A) Is this possible? I think I've read about a report viewer that can be embedded into .net applications. If I create a menu system in .net, that shells to execute the maintenance programs that are from vb6, or fires off the report viewer, does this sound feasible? The application is supposed to run connected to their SQL 2005 server via a VPN; I get blank looks when I ask them if they have reporting services installed...

With the following code I can list the display name of all software installed on a local machine.
'Declare the string to hold the list:
Dim Software As String = Nothing
'The registry key:
Dim SoftwareKey As String = "SOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUninstall"
Using rk As RegistryKey = Registry.LocalMachine.OpenSubKey(SoftwareKey)
'Let's go through the registry keys and get the info we need:
For Each skName As String In rk.GetSubKeyNames()
Using sk As RegistryKey = rk.OpenSubKey(skName)
[Code] .....
What I need is to get the FileName
to be used to start the application like notepad.exe and not just the displayname
Dim p As New System.Diagnostics.Process
p.StartInfo.FileName = filename & ".exe"
