VS 2008 Class And Read A Line From A File And Add It Into A Listbox

Sep 12, 2009

I am trying to read a line from a file and add it into a listbox. The SelectedIndexChanged event of the listbox places the selected item (hence, the item I added from the file) into a variable that is declared as a Store (my own personal class.) I can easily add the line from the file into the listbox, but I run into a problem with the SelectedIndexChanged event. When I click on the item in the listbox, I get an error that says "Unable to cast object of type 'System.String' to type 'WindowsApplication1.Store'." (I guess this is because I added an item to the listbox that is from a file.) I tried a variety of methods of casting, but nothing seems to work. What can I do to fix this?

ListBox PreferredHeight - Make ListBox Calculate Correct Integral Height Before ListBox Is Made Visible

Nov 19, 2009

If I set a ListBox.Height = ListBox.PreferredHeight when the control is hidden and IntegralHeight = True, then set it visible:

a) Actual Height reduces by typically 3-5 pixels after redraw (but not 1 pixel per item).

b) PreferredHeight does not not appear to give the correct integral of item heights.

Is there a way to make ListBox calculate the correct integral Height before the ListBox is made visible, so it can be correctly pre-positioned from bottom edge?

Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load

ListBox1.Visible = False
ListBox1.IntegralHeight = True

VS 2008 Make A Little Application That Will Read An Fps Server Chat Log?

May 7, 2009

im trying to make a little application that will read an fps server chat log.the chat logs are plain text files that come in the format :

Billy says: yada yada yada
Bob says: mooo

on certain key phrases (which will be user defined) it will reply (also user defined) now my problems. (there are many). most of which stem from not actually knowing any syntax for this language.firstly im suffering something of a huge brain fart with trying to read only the last line. i have it currently reading though the whole file and counting line numbers but then i just hit a wall . what do i do with the line number? i cant find a simple way to stop and come then have it check again after a couple of seconds for a new line? allegedly filestream can seek the end of the file however all my attempts to do anything with filestream have met with absolutle failure.

this is what i currently have for this, and it works to some degree

FileReader = New IO.StreamReader(OpenFileDialog1.FileName)
Do While FileReader.Peek <> -1
txtln = FileReader.ReadLine()

[code]....

i have the remnants of both the options ive considered in there, and its almost doing what i need it to . i just have no idea what to put into the last section to make it wait for another line to be added to the text file, or use the linenumber to make it check back from there for more lines. i cant seem to find a wait/sleep/pause so i just dont know.

my other problem is one of file access. i am aware of some properties of filestream that allow for a shared read/write access for other programs . however as i stated before . i have had no success even getting this simple peice of code to work with filestream.

Read Contents Of Textfile Into Listbox?

May 15, 2009

I'm trying to place the contents of a text file (just a list of names) into a list box when the form loads.

My code currently looks like this:

Imports System.IO
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load

[Code].....

I can get the names into the list box, but they're all on one line. I thought about using a For...Next loop to read the contents of the text file, but I got into all sorts of trouble; do I need an array with that method? So I've got back to the code I originally had.

Read Info From Text File And Add To ListBox

Jul 23, 2010

I am making a program, obviously, and I require some assistance. I found an explanation on how to read information from a Text file and have modified it for my needs. Here is my (modded) version:

Public Function GetInfo(ByVal playlistname As String) As String
On Error Resume Next
Dim PlaylistInfo As String
Dim ReadInfo As System.IO.StreamReader = System.IO.File.OpenText(My.Settings.OpenPlaylistName)
PlaylistInfo = ReadInfo.ReadToEnd
[Code] .....

I pretty much understood how to write text to a file, but I cannot grasp how to READ the information. After I read the information, I would like to add each seperate line to a ListBox. Each line in the text file is a file path for a music file, as the file I wish to read information from is a "custom extension" playlist file. I know what to do after I get the file path, but I do not know how to get the file path from the playlist.

VS 2010 Getting A Button To Read From Xml File Or Listbox?

I'm trying to get a random line of text to appear in a messagebox upon button click, I want the listbox to be closed while the action is to be performed.

I can do it when the listbox is open but not when closed, here is what happens if I try to do it when it's closed

and the message "InvalidArgument=Value of '0' is not valid for 'SelectedIndex'."
I tried reading it straight from the .xml file the data is stored on, but that didn't go so well either.

[2008] Copying From One Listbox To Another And Keeping The Paths Of The Files In The Listbox's

Jan 26, 2009

I am having problems with copying from one listbox to another and keeping the paths of the files in the listbox's. At the moment i have two listbox's, listbox1 shows the list of files without the directory paths showing. Listbox2 is used to add items from listbox1 which work ok but what i need is to be able to preserve the directory paths to each file. how to do this and have searched high and low for a solution without any luck.

I have worked out one way of doing it but i think there is a better way of doing it as the reverse does not seem to work. So basicly i want listbox1 to list the files without the paths and pass it on to listbox2 so that the files can be copied to temp directory as they are being add to listbox2.

Below is my

[CODE]...................

Routine to add items from listbox1 to listbox2: I have created another listbox3 (which is in bold), which is hidded under listbox1 and holds all the paths to the files and is use to copy the files from there original directory to a new directory.

[CODE]...................

Routine to add items back to listbox1 and remove them from listbox2. I have created another listbox4 which is hidden under listbox2 which i was trying add the paths from listbox3.
