Let User Specify Excel Column To Import
Dec 2, 2009I have a function within a class that imports an Excel sheet into an arraylist. I have overcome the problem of asking the user if there is a header or not. Now I want to ask the user which column is the data in. Here is my basic code for getting the header Yes/No and this is handled with a simple MessageBox... but of course this cannot be used to return a numeric value such as (0) being column #1. So I'm thinking I need a special form to pop up which the user will enter the the column being 1,2,3,4,5... etc. Of course subtracting "one" 1-1=0 is column 1 and 2-1=1 is column 2, etc.
Here's how I handled the header issue with a message box:

Mar 21, 2009I'm trying to get data from one column on my datagridview (That is reading data from an SQL Database) and put the column into a listbox.im using Datagridview as I made a program that was previously using a HUGE number of querys that make the program very inefitient when im only after one number etc, instead im downloading all the information to a datagridview object then using that for my querys then updating the database, at the minute i need to be able to manipulate the data into VB objects so the user doesnt get confused, need 1 column from datagridview to populate a listbox.

This is the only way this file can be exported from the system that is sending the information.
The second item is the Header and of course the 3rd would be the value that needs to be inserted into the row. How do I import a file like this. It is going to be sent to me every 5 minutes so I have to be able to extract the data shortly after the file arrives and insert it into Sql server.

The code works fine except that only the first row is added to the database. I used a msgbox to ensure that I am iterating through all of the excel values. So I am not sure what is wrong.

I can import an excel sheet to a DGV just fine, but want I want to do is import it row by row so that I can do validation on each field and then if it is ok, put it in the DGV.if I could do it row by row, validate, then add it to a datatable/dataset, then bind that to a DGV.I can't find any example code of someone doing it row by row, only SELECT * which grabs everything and puts it in a dataset.
