Sep 27, 2010I have a function that gets a string passed to it.When testing the function, I'm getting a null reference exception on the string parameter that gets passed to it, even though the string is not null, I don't understand why I'm getting this error.I used a dummy value to verify both the string parameter in the SelectSingleNode function and the newValue string parameter being passed to my function and they both contain values, so I don't understand why it's throwing a null reference exception. Just for clarity, the purpose of the function is to write values back to the nodes of an XML file.[code]

Feb 25, 2011I'm getting the following exception when I try to run up my Winforms app and haven't been able to find a solution to it:
System.ArgumentNullException was unhandled
Message=Value cannot be null.
Parameter name: activationContext

I've added a handler for the "unhandled error" event in the applicationevents class but it never reaches that stage and there is no source code running that I can break into and diagnose.
The application was fine until I added a user control (nothing fancy, just a standard windows user control) and then dragged it onto a form in the app (user control and form were in the same application). The application builds and compiles without any errors or warnings but when I attempt to run it up I get the above error straight away.
Does anyone have any idea what it could be or even how I can go about investigating it? I'm a bit stumped on this one as I'm not sure how to investigate it. I removed the user control from the form and then I removed the user control from the application entirely but the error hasn't gone away. In all honesty the addition of the user control might be a red herring but the problem manifested straight after adding it.

Apr 15, 2009I'm finishing up working on the high score list of my Jeopardy game. The only problem that I'm running into is when I try to start from scratch without a textfile in the Debug folder.I get a NullReferenceException was unhandled - Object reference not set to an instance of an object. I get this message with the line If (myPlayers.Length - 1) > 2 Then just before I start to compare the scores and reorder the list by score if necessary.I already declared myPlayers as an array of structures in the beginning of the form.

It writes the name and score to the file, but then gives me that error. My goal is to only fill the file with the three players names and their scores.I figured since the file doesn't exist, I'm doing something in that specific code that effects my reference to myPlayers but I can't figure out what exactly. I tried adding

Getting Error In Code As Initially Array List Is Null / NullReferenceException Was Unhandled
Oct 19, 2009The code below is used to check if the application setting, an arraylist is populated or not via the count method.
When running the program fails with error "NullReferenceException was unhandled" as initially the setting (arraylist) will contain no values.In similar circumstances I would declare a new instance of the object or set value to string.empty or check if DBNull.
I know application settings have a save method but to reference/load them one is not needed.I also left the value field in the projects -> settings to be empty.[code]...

Asp.net - NullReference On Object In Code Behind After AsyncPostBack Using UpdatePanel?
Feb 20, 2012I'm building a simple game in an ASP.NET/VB.NET web app. The game has a UI made up of several ImageButtons. The web page's code behind file holds an instance to the game object which will manage each turn taken by players. Everything worked when the Game object's methods were Shared. The problem occurred after refactoring to make the game object work as an instance instead of a shared class. Now, when the action returns to the code behind, the instance of the game object is nothing.

Nov 15, 2011MVC 3. VB.NET I have the following controller action in my application to send generated PDF files to the User by download. The function works fine when the controller itself has been invoked. But when I call to the function from outside the controller it returns a " Object reference not set to an instance of an object " error as soon as it hits the response.contenttype line. I have verified that all of the variables are in fact making it to the below action.[code]any ideas why this is only working when called explicitly from inside its containing controller???

Aug 17, 2011I am getting this error when I call a javascript function to display a modal window:
Microsoft JScript runtime error: 'document.getElementById(...)' is null or not an object
The code block is:

The object is this situation, does exist. Error is caused at: document.getElementById line.What else could be causing the error?
Update:Index.aspx is calling the javascript function which is located in sysUtilities.js file. The source file is yet a seperate page (ChangeView.aspx)

If I check if menudata.children isnot nothing, it always is nothing because the GetChildren function is yet to run (providing the child items, which do exist). If I remove this check and just have this code:

VS 2008 Unhandled Exception - Cannot Access Disposed Object
