VS 2008 SQL Trigger Causing Datetime Conversion SQLException When Running From VB?
Jul 20, 2009
I'm using VB Express 2008 and MS SQL Express 2008. I have a couple of tables in my SQL database and among them are some log tables that track changes in the data entries of the substantive tables and fields I have. I have one log table fore each of the datatypes that appear in my substantive tables.
For example any change to any field in a substantive table where the field is of a bit type will be logged to the BitTypeLogTable. All of my log files are structured essentially the same. For example the structure for my BitTypeLogTable looks like this:
The other logs are identical except that the OrigValue and NewValue fields have different datatypes according to the datatype they are intended to track. For example the datatypes for those fields in the DatetimeTypeLog is datetime and in the MoneyTypeLog is money.
Each of the substantive tables in my database has three triggers which cause entries to be made to the log tables when the substantive fields are changed. For example, one of the UpdateTriggers looks like the following:

My application requires a user to log in and allows them to edit a list of things. However, it seems that if the same user always logs in and out and edits the list, this user will run into a "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired." error. I've read a comment about it possibly caused by uncommitted transactions. And I do have one going in the application.

In a Windows Form on Visual Basic, I have a DateTime Picker for a user to select a time and date from.I'm inserting this value via a parameterized query into an Access Database. However, as I'm running the form, I keep getting the error Data type mismatch in criteria expression.If I remove the parameter from the Insert command, the field enters fine. But when I put it back in, it doesn't work.[code]

I'm attempting to convert VB 5.0 source code to VB 2008. The converted code will then be slightly altered to facilitate its incorporation into a larger project that I'm developing in VB 2008. After using the conversion wizard (which is actually written for VB 6.0), I have 49 unresolved issues -- less than I expected. Much has changed since the days of my prowess as a programmer (Fortran in the 70's), so working my way through even as few as 49 issues will be a challenge, and will (no doubt) take me a while.
The UI for the VB 5.0 code I'm converting is a "virtual remote," with control buttons that (when clicked) trigger communication to a USB-connected device. With assistance, I've been able to develop my own "virtual remote," contained within my VB 2008 project. Eventually, I will "substitute" mine for the original. For now, though, I'm wanting to use MY "virtual remote" to trigger the original.
I have the executable for the VB 5.0 program, and can run it simultaneously with my "under-development" VB 2008 code. Problem is: I don't know how to cause a "click" on MY virtual remote to trigger a click on the original virtual remote (which is being "monitored" by the other program).

I am getting this datetime format in an xml file:
2012-06-14T11:15:41.587-07:00
2012-06-14T10:49:32.397-07:00
2012-06-11T11:10:49.2-07:00
I believe I understand some of it, please correct me if I am wrong:
2012-06-14 = date
T = time identifier
10:49:32.397 = hour min second milliseconds
-07:00 = I have no idea
I need to convert this to something I can sort on for my datagrid view.
When I try something like this:
Console.WriteLine(String.Format("{0:d/M/yyyy HH:mm:ss}", "2012-06-14T10:49:32.397-07:00"))
I'm getting the original string back out with no conversion.

I need to be able to do enter a workshift in a program. In access it made no issue of the fact that date/time was the format. Now in my program when I enter a shift for example
begin: 08:00:00 end: 16:00:00
t converts it to this in MySQL
2008/00/00 00:00:00 and 2016/00/00 00:00:00.

I have two datetimepickers on my form to set a start date and end date for a SQL server database query. I am passing these dates with parameters to my query from the .Value of the datetimepickers. When I run the program, the code returns an error of "Conversion failed when converting datetime from character string" I am not converting anything in my code. It is my understanding that the StartDatePicker.Value is already a datetime and does not require conversion.
Here is some code:
'Define Wages_Query
Dim Wages_Query As String = _
"SELECT [Department], [Operation_NUM], sum(STWag) as [STwag], SUM(OTWag) as [OTWag]," & _
" SUM(Shift_Diff) as [Shift_Diff]," & _
" SUM(COALESCE(STWag,0) + COALESCE(OTWag,0) + COALESCE(Shift_Diff,0)) as [TotalWages]" & _
" FROM dbo.Financial" & _

I'm having the following error message with a date value in production server. "The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value" In the development server the problem never happened. Both production and development servers have the same OS (Windows Server 2003), updates and settings including the regional settings options. The regional options is set to Arabic (Saudi Arabia) and the date is customized to use (English) gorgerin calendar. The non-Unicode is set to Arabic (Saudi Arabia).
My solution contains an ASP.NET web application and a class library. In my class library project I'm trying to get a list of rows from the database (SQL 2005) and I'm using a date rang [Code] Is there a way that I can use to manipulate dates regardless of the regional options settings?

Im having an issue with a Stored Procedure I have written,I can call it in management studio and it works fine, yet calling it from my codebehind gives this error The conversion of a varchar data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range value. when i call da.Fill(dt)What is really puzzling me here is that I dont actually convert anything from varchar to datetime, the most I do with the date variables is format them into a different datetime format.
My VB.Net code
Private Function dbGetEvents(ByVal start As DateTime, ByVal days As Integer) As DataTable
Dim dt As New DataTable()[code].....
I cant see where this error could be coming from, having tested running it in SQL management studio without error I am pretty sure the error is in the VB.My first thought was that maybe the parameter I am passing in the @start / @end values arent being recognised as DateTime so I tried adding the parameters like:
Dim p As New SqlParameter
p.SqlDbType = SqlDbType.DateTime
p.ParameterName = "@start"[code]....

This may or may not need to be moved to the deployment folder...Okay I have a vb.Net application that connections to a sql server 2005 database "TacticalDB" while debugging the application I was using the connection string,
Dim con As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection("Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS; AttachDbFilename=" + Application.StartupPath + "DataTacticalDB.mdf; Database=TacticalDB; Trusted_Connection=True; User Instance=true")
Which works fine, but I have moved into getting the application ready for deployment and so I created a setup application in the same solution as the application. Now I have added the database file with the setup but when my application gets to the con.Open() line it catches an exception,
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Database 'C:UsersJohnDocumentsVisual Studio 2008ProjectsBlackout_ScoutBlackout_Scoutinx86DebugDataTacticalDB.mdf' already exists. Choose a different database name.
Cannot attach the file 'C:Program Files (x86)MicrosoftSetup1DataTacticalDB.mdf' as database 'TacticalDB'.
[code]....
Now I only have the one place where the application should look for the Database and thats Application.startupPath/Data/TacticalDB.mdf and if im running the newly installed exe it shouldn't look back in the myprojects folder but it is.

I have a main form that has a dynamically generated treeview and also a panel control. Depending on the selection made within the treeview the panel docks 1 of three diffrent usercontrols which are full sub forms(done for ease of modifing design of sub form rather than layering panels on top of panels).Upon button click withing usercontrol i wish to trigger event within main form.For example delete button wich then triggers to remove current selected node from treeview. code for 1 of three diffrent user controls
Dim ctrlQ As New QuoteUC(TrViewQuotation.SelectedNode)
PnlSubFormDock1.Controls.Add(ctrlQ)
Code for delete button for which i need to raise event.
If MsgBox("Are you sure you wish to delete this customer ?", vbYesNo, "Delete Record") = vbYes Then

i have to develop a software for motorola mc9090 that reads barcodes and rfids simultaneously, so i need to catch two different triggers: the one on the keyboard for barcodes and the other in the backside for rfids.the problem is that i didn't find any sample that illustrates how to set the trigger to read only barcodes, i found something on emdk 2.5 samples that shows how to set the trigger to read rfids but nothing for barcodes. So when i press any trigger the barcode reader is always enabled with rfids reader.Does exist a way to manage them with separated triggers?

When my form is loading, it executes a Method called populateListBox().As the ListBox is populated, it inevitably triggers ListBox.SelectedIndexChanged, which triggers this
Private Sub lstLabels_SelectedIndexChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles lstLabels.SelectedIndexChanged
Try
buttonCheck()
Dim pathText As String
[Code]...
If I stick the Try...Catch in, allowing it to bypass the error, everything loads fine and when I double click an item in the ListBox, I have a MessageBox setup to show the SelectedValue, and it works fine (it shows a number like it should). Even if I put a MessageBox in the SelectedIndexChanged event, I still get the same error on the MessageBox line during the loading of the form.
Is this because the form is not fully loaded that I get this error? And what would be the proper way to handle this? I need this code in the SelectedIndexChanged for when the user selects a new item, so how do I keep this error from happening (or maybe even the event from triggering) during form load? Because I'm sure having a Try...Catch is not really an accepted form of "fixing" an exception; it's just ignoring it.

I tried to start using VB 2010 Express with a program I originally developed with VB 2005 Express that I moved to VB 2008 Express successfully a couple years ago. It uses a database file (*.mdf) that is on the computer ( not out on a server). When attempt to run the program in debug mode, I get the following error "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Documents and SettingsTomMy DocumentsQuizzing StuffQuestion Database 2010QuizQuest ionGameQuizQuestionGameinReleaseQuizQuestionDB.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share."
I first made a copy of the entire project folder that was working in VB 2008 Express and gave it a different name. In VB2010 I opened the project in the copied folder and it said it successfully converted the project. I am able to open the Data Source inthe Designer and see the database structure as I expect. I think the project is still using SQL Server 2005 Express (because it is what is checked in the list of prerequisites on the Publish tab).
Note, I have programmed off and on for many years, but fairly new to using databases and SQL Server.

Basically what happens is each time it loops through it adds a number to the end of the string, and by the end I should end up with an array full of string in a format like "111 222 333 444 555 666" but I end up getting strings like this "111 111 222 222 333 333". The weird thing is, if I add a message box in every loop it works fine, but obviously I don't want a message box pooping up every time it loops through. What is causing this and how might I fix it
The code is:
For x As Integer = 0 To (NumCards.Value - 1)
NumRep = 0

I have a single user app that I wrote and have been using for more than a year that uses an Access 2003 database. Today, out of the blue, I started getting a DB concurrency violation whenever I tried to update one particular table in the database. After trying to troubleshoot what the problem might be, I just deleted that table and recreated it and the problem went away.
