VS 2008 - Important To Turn Option Strict On ?
Oct 13, 2009Why is it so important to turn option strict on? I admit I am not a professional programmer, but I have written a great number of useful applications...I am fairly well (although self) educated in object oriented programming... I even write programs for my business...I always have felt that I am missing some background theory that is probably really important (I have a grad degree in math, no comp sci)...I have never turned on Option Strict for any project I have ever written, and I guess I just want to know, theoretically why is it important?

Jun 27, 2012We are currently hiring at the company where I work, and here the codebase is in VB.Net.We are worried that we miss out on a lot of brilliant programmers, who would never ever consider working with VB.Net.
My own background is Java and C#, and I was somewhat sceptical as to whether it would work out with VB, as - to be honest - I didn't care much for VB.
After a month or so, I was completely fluent in VB, and a few months later I discovered to my surprise, that I actually like VB. I still code my free time projects in C# and Boo though.
So my question is firstly, how important is language for you, when you choose a new programming job?
Lets say if its a great company, salary is good, and generally an attractive work-place. Would you say no to the perfect job, if the language wasn't your preferred dialect?VB or C# is one thing, but how about Java or C# etc.Secondly if the best developers won't join your company because of your language or platform, would you consider changing, to get the right people?

VS 2008 - Webclient Object And POST Data - Sign In Error
Oct 7, 2011I've managed to narrow down my issue to a simple annoyance. I had a Webbrowser control mostly coded to navigate around an Oracle CRM On Demand site to generate metric reports, but then realized when I tried to build in the auto-download part, that the Webbrowser object wasn't going to give me the behind-the-scenes control I wanted. Searching online, it seems the Webclient control might be a better route. However I'm stuck trying to get by the login page so I can use the Download-File method to get my generated xls report. [Code] But every reply from the server has "Sign In Error: Both a user sign in ID and a password must be given." which tells me the form/post data isn't getting where it needs to go (It thinks the form is blank at [Code].
The above username and password are bogus of course, but once I can get a different reply then 'the fields are blank' I can worry about correct logon information. I'm just not sure what I'm not doing correctly or if I need to include something else. Since it's a publicly accessible site and I'm stuck getting something in the form to be 'seen', it should be easy for others to try and test.
Create Overview 'outline' Of Most Important Sections Of An App In Program?
May 1, 2009I want to code in our VB.net to be a little easier to follow both to improve readability and also make it a lot easier to know the best place to put a new bit of code/feature.
Essentially, I'd like to have a 10,000 foot "outline" of the code" with hyperlinks from the outline to the code.
It needs to be portable, so BookMarks won't do the trick (I think). I'm thinking maybe TODO comments. I'd like to create our own Todo style comment like "Outline" or something but that keyword would need to be in the config file for VS as well (but then it's just one thing to keep sync'd).[code]...

C# - Loading An Assembly Using Assembly.LoadFrom() As The Assemblies Are Located In A Different Path?
Apr 2, 2012I am loading an Assembly using Assembly.LoadFrom() as the assemblies are located in a different path from Application Base directory.

And I consume a Type from that assembly without any problem:

However, the problem occurs when I try to use a Type from this assembly from within another method like the one below:

sAssemblyName is the one I loaded using LoadFrom() actually. After it said it cannot find the assembly, I used AssemblyResolve event which solved my problem :Subscribing AssemblyResolve event :

And I thought maybe the error occurs because it cannot find a dependent assembly defined in assembly manifest file I loaded using LoadFrom() already but when I checked the args.Name, I saw it was trying to load same assembly and after that it worked without any problem. So basically a type in the loaded assembly cannot be found before the event adding change.
My old code was using AppDomain.CurrentDomain.Load() and Assembly.Load() methods and they were working fine without the AssemblyResolve event. I was able to reach types in dynamically loaded Assembly from every where within the same AppDomain.
LoadFrom() can find dependencies automatically within the same requested assembly path and that couldn't be problem as everything this dll needs was there. So at first it looked like a AppDomain problem to me as it looks like it seems it can reach assemblies from Load context instead of LoadFrom context and I am now using LoadFrom context.But now it seems I should pass oAssembly instance evertwhere to use any type from the loaded assembly?Doesn't it load the assembly where I can reach it everywhere (same AppDomain) using simple Type.GetType(...) method?

Jun 1, 2011I'm wanting to include a system tray icon in my WPF project, and found this resource:[URL]..which looks like it will work beautifully, but it's written for C# and I'm using VB.net for this project. I downloaded his project and built the notifyicon as a DLL, then added as a reference to my project.
It throws up an error: Unable to emit assembly: Referenced assembly 'Hardcodet.Wpf.TaskbarNotification' does not have a strong name So I'm trying to figure out the best way to proceed. Do I need to strong name it, or is there a better way to do this?

Apr 7, 2009I have written a .net assembly which plugs into to a third party COM application. The .net assembly is COM visible to the third party application. However this .net assembly references other regular assemblies. If I put these assemblies in the GAC the COM visibile assembly sees them without a problem. However for various reasons I do not want to put them into the GAC but I cannot get my COM visible assembly to see the other assemblies when they are in other locations. I have tried putting them in the same directory as the COM visible assembly. I have tried putting them in the same directory as the third party app's exe but neither of these work.

Jan 14, 2010Since, it's possible for anyone to name an assembly starting with 'System', checking for 'System' is not a satisfactory solution.
Alternatively, if that's not possible, how about checking the modules in an assembly?
Use Global Assembly Like A Private Assembly
Jun 20, 2010I am building a dll-Assemby A which references another Assembly B. Assembly B is strongly named and installed in the GAC of my development computer. An other computer will not have assembly B installed in the GAC.
Question: If i handle strongly named assembly B like a private assembly and copying it into the bin-directory by specifying local copy = true in the properties-window, will the programm run on the other computer?

Oct 8, 2009One of them is giving us trouble in only 1 spot out of the 4 spots we use it at:The trouble spot is a windows form project that uses reflection to dynamically load some DLLs that run long running processes. One of these long running processes is an agent that relies on one of our vender DLLsWe're getting the missing assembly exception at the point where we first enter a function that references the library. I already checked the silly things such as if we had forgotten to move a reference from the old version to the new version, but that's not the case. I also checked the bin directory of the project and the assembly is there.

Jun 30, 2010I have created a .NET assembly, clicked 'Register for COM Interop' on the properties page, strongly named it and compiled it. Then I GAC'd the .NET DLL manually. Calling the .NET assembly from my VB6 code with 'CreateObject("MyNETProject.class1")' gives me an automation error. I've gone through about 3 iterations of this for most of the day and cannot sort out what I'm doing wrong. I have a feeling it's got to do with my .NET assembly settings and GACing but it all seems right.
