C# - Important Is The Programming Language When Choose A New Job?

Jun 27, 2012

We are currently hiring at the company where I work, and here the codebase is in VB.Net.We are worried that we miss out on a lot of brilliant programmers, who would never ever consider working with VB.Net.

My own background is Java and C#, and I was somewhat sceptical as to whether it would work out with VB, as - to be honest - I didn't care much for VB.

After a month or so, I was completely fluent in VB, and a few months later I discovered to my surprise, that I actually like VB. I still code my free time projects in C# and Boo though.

So my question is firstly, how important is language for you, when you choose a new programming job?

Lets say if its a great company, salary is good, and generally an attractive work-place. Would you say no to the perfect job, if the language wasn't your preferred dialect?VB or C# is one thing, but how about Java or C# etc.Secondly if the best developers won't join your company because of your language or platform, would you consider changing, to get the right people?

DB/Reporting :: Database Design Quandary Modelling 'substitutions' Or 'equivalency' Of Records

Jan 14, 2009

I've got a large and complex database system that is about to get even more complex, and I'm having trouble coming up with a reasonable way to model the new requirements so as to minimize the performance hit.For simplicity's sake, I'm going to use the example of certification exams, although it's not a perfect analogy for my system. So we have the following tables:

- Person
- Certification
- Exam
- Certification_Exams (join table indicating which exams are required per cert)
- Person_Exams (join table indicating which exams a person has taken)

Given that model, we can easily show that Certification A requires Exam 1, and Certification B requires Exam 2 and Exam 3.We can also determine whether a person is certified by checking Person_Exams to see if they have passed all exams required for the certification we're querying. (Note that we are not directly storing certifications for a person; these must be derived. That's one of the areas where the cert exam analogy doesn't quite match my real-life scenario, so please accept that there's a good business reason for it.In my world, the cert requirements are going to change frequently, so a person might get suddenly "un-certified.")Now enter the new requirement: We now need to be able to indicate that Certification A could be satisfied by either Exam 1 or Exam 4.And furthermore, Certification B always requires Exam 2 but also requires either Exam 3 or the combination of Exams 5, 6, and 7.I've come up with a couple different approaches so far, but the subsequent queries to be able to tell whether someone meets the criteria for a given certification are then incredibly complex.

Variables - Combining Multiple Data Types Into A Single Unified Data Structure

Mar 16, 2012

In VB.NET I would like to create a complicated data structure with multiple types of data stored in an array like format (see below). I am trying to create a data structure that would look something like this: [Name; xLoc; yLoc; zLoc; [Jagged Array]] Note: Name needs to be dimensioned as a string, xLoc and so forth as integers. The Jagged Array would look like this:

Localization - Menu Strip To Select An Other Language - Doesn't Change My Menustip Text To My Selected Language

Mar 29, 2010

In my winform app in VB.NET I want to use the localization option. But i have a few questions/problems. I'm using a menu strip to select an other language. But it seems that is doesn't change my menustip text to my selected language. It does change my labels, buttons, and textboxes but menu strips don't seem to change when I choose another language. Also is it possible to get those resx files such as MyForm.fr-FR.resx compiled so it isn't an external file outside my app? Or to get those files in an Language folder at the same location of my app, so i don't have all those fr-FR & nl-Nl folders in the same location as my program?

VS 2008 - Important To Turn Option Strict On ?

Oct 13, 2009

Why is it so important to turn option strict on? I admit I am not a professional programmer, but I have written a great number of useful applications...I am fairly well (although self) educated in object oriented programming... I even write programs for my business...I always have felt that I am missing some background theory that is probably really important (I have a grad degree in math, no comp sci)...I have never turned on Option Strict for any project I have ever written, and I guess I just want to know, theoretically why is it important?

Create Overview 'outline' Of Most Important Sections Of An App In Program?

May 1, 2009

I want to code in our VB.net to be a little easier to follow both to improve readability and also make it a lot easier to know the best place to put a new bit of code/feature.

Essentially, I'd like to have a 10,000 foot "outline" of the code" with hyperlinks from the outline to the code.

It needs to be portable, so BookMarks won't do the trick (I think). I'm thinking maybe TODO comments. I'd like to create our own Todo style comment like "Outline" or something but that keyword would need to be in the config file for VS as well (but then it's just one thing to keep sync'd).[code]...

Data Modelling Techniques To Handle Lots Of Data?

Apr 6, 2011

So I have a relatively small website with growing amounts of data - the fastest growing table is pageviews, as we do all our analytics ourselves. The website is made using VB.Net, SQL Server 2008 and jQuery. I am limited to .net 2.5.I currently handle all the data and validation using objects with a list of attributes. Each attribute is of a specific datatype and has a validation function when a new value is given to it. If the data does not validate then it won't even get as far as updating the database and feeds back an error to the user. Currently I have "Manager" classes and "Item" classes - Items are managed by a particular Manager class, for example Users are managed by the UserManager, so to get all the users I just have to call UserManager.Items. These Manager classes are stored in the cache and are created as needed - but once a Manager class is referenced it creates all of the Items within it. This is getting rather slow now, as the company is growing fast. It takes 2 - 3 seconds to load the first page (the page which makes most first-time requests to data) but I am not happy with this time. After that it is nearly instant.

Now the way I see it I have 3 options to speed the website up: Keep it as it is, but try to make it more efficient through other techniques;Change to creating all these objects on every page load, in the hope that it is simply so slow because I am using the cache to store a fair amount of data (about 10 MB or so at least);Forgetting using object oriented techniques and just use straight SQL queries and loop through records.

IDE :: When Localizing A Form / Select Language In Form Properties But IDE Automatically Selects Different Language

Nov 29, 2010

I have multilingual application that was done in VB2005.We recently had a request to translate the application to Arabic (Egypt), so I have been happily running through all of the forms and changing the layout for Right to Left format.I have 2 forms that are problematic though. On one form, whenever I select Arabic (Egypt), it will automatically switch the selection to Arabic (Saudi Arabia) and try to add an ar-SA resx file.On the other problematic form, if I choose Arabic (Egypt), the IDE will automatically select Chinese (People's Republic of China), then copy the contents of my ar-EG resx file into the zh-CN file, overwriting all of our Chinese translations and layout changes with the Arabic ones.

Show An Explanation And For The Addition And Subtraction - Show It On A Number Line

Mar 7, 2010

I'm writing a program for my algebra students to practice integers.Stuff like....

3-6
-4 + (-5)
3(-4)
-15 3
etc.

I want to show an explanation and for the addition and subtraction, I want to show it on a number line. For example, if the problem is 3 - 7, the number line should show and arrow to that goes right to 3, and then left 7 units (starting from 3). Then the student can see that the answer is -4.I could probably do this with some string manipulation, but what would be the easiest way to do it in a picture format? Maybe a bitmap.

Best Language To Convert .net App To Web

Feb 16, 2012

I have created a neat visual basic app.In it are 25 little Access databases that the user selects things from. The costs of each selection is added, subtracted, divided and totaled. Finally all the selection totals (25 of them) are saved in one database that the user can come back later to either finish selecting (if he didn't before) or delete it. There are many images and sounds, text boxes, drop down lists, etc in the app. Its about 10MB big.

What langauge do you think would be the best one to use to put this app on the web so that users can play with it without buying a CD or downloading a CD?

Before I invest to have it re-done in a lanquage to put it on the web OR I learn another langauge and do it myself..

Changing The Language Of App?

Jul 21, 2010

have created a text editor, but I want to upgrade it with some serious functionality and userbility.

I have done most of the things that I had planned, but I have also come up with an idea that I am not too sure on how to code.

I have created a dialog box which opens when you click the options menu item in the menu stip control, I have customised this dialog box so the user can change display modes and so on but now I want to be able to change the language of the entire application as in from the default English (american) to French, German and so on.

When the user changes the language selection I want the text in the menu bar, the title of the app and the text of whatever is in the text box of the app.

I have created check boxes for the language selections, and invoked the check box click handle events but not sure how to proceed with the rest of the code.
