Issue : Is there any efficient way to arrange many independent Windows Forms in .Net? I have to display many forms at the same time in my application. It is a graphic charting application, and the number of forms depends of what the user wants, so it has to be dynamic. Is it possible to arrange it like with MDI Layout ?
Example: For example, if user chooses 12 output chart forms, I would like to have them auto-arranged 4x3 on the default screen. Ideally, User could even choose many target screens among the monitors he has.
Why not use MDI: I do NOT want MDI, since my application is multi-screen and I want to leave the opportunity to the user to put his external output chart windows scattered over different screens wherever he wants. But I would though like to have a default arrangement of output windows, without calculating manually screen and forms width/heights by dividing and stuff (Already doing this, it's a real pain). I would like to spare myself this ant-work and focus on business logic.
What I am looking for: If somebody knows an open source library or tool or cool method that could be great. By the way, I found a very useful and handy tool that could help people having the same needs I am formulating here: It is named AquaSnap, but unfortunately code is not Open Source. PS: Again, I Know how to do it "by hand" and assign monitors to forms. It is not the kind of answers I am looking for.
In VB6, MDI applications were possible. You'd create a form and a few Child forms and go with it.

As you can see, I need loopong through all the open child forms.
I have a Midi form with controls I always want to be displayed even when child forms are open. I can position the location of the child forms when the project is first opened with no issues. The problem I have is if more than 3 child forms are open and I enter the middle form one of the others is no longer visible. Me.LayoutMdi(MdiLayout.Cascade) will reorder all the forms but it starts at location(0,0). Have tried the other options available with midilayout and they all do the same thing

View 2 RepliesI want a set of child forms to keep their relative sizes and locations to their parent form when parent form is resized. So if one child form is opened and covers the lower right quadrant.. it will remain a quadrant for whatever resize is done on parent form.

I am now able to open the child forms in the main window background.Now what happens is When I click on one menu Item it open in the parent form background.I am able to open all child forms corresponding to the click event in the MenuToolStrip ...all in the Parent form Now the problem is that I cannot minimize child forms when I minimize Parent form..I want child forms also to minimize along with the Parent form.. Also are child forms still not attached to the parent Form is also my question here.....

View 4 RepliesI am looking for the best way to dynamically arrange the location of labels (or any control for that matter) during runtime in a Windows Forms application using VB.net or C# in VS2008.I have a control that displays messages created by users.This control has a panel docked at the top which holds the header information for each message, called pnlHeader There are 8 labels: 4 of them display static descriptions (e.g. "To", "From", "Created Date", "Completed Date")And the other 4 display the relevant data for those descriptions. (Passed in during runtime from a MS SQL 2005 DB).Static labels are named: lblCreatedDateLbl and dynamic ones: lblCreatedDate The application runs on monitors of various size and resolution, therefor I would like for all of the labels to arrange themselves with equal spacing in pnlHeader, based on the current width of the panel.
At first, I had simply created the labels in the Designer and used Anchors (half of the lables were set to (Top, Left) and the other half to (Top, Right)). This solution worked for most scenarios, but did not always provide a consistent solution, so I decided to add the controls in code instead.
I thought it would be easier to work with the labels by creating a panel for each corresponding pair. So pnlCreatedDate would hold lblCreatedDateLbl and lblCreatedDate I wrote 2 methods: 1 to define each label and add it to the relevant panel: Sub AddLabels
and another to determine the width of the panels and set the correct location: Sub SetLoc Currently, AddLabels runs in the constructor after InitializeComponent() and SetLoc is called after the data has been passed in from the database.
I've tried making minor changes and tweaks to the width and size parameters, enabling and disabling AutoSize, but nothing returns a consistent solution, instead either all the description labels are misplaced, or do not appear at all or completely whack locations come up.

Is it possible to take an Excel spreadsheet and move some columns around? Basically I receive spreadsheets that need to be re-formatted and have the columns shifted, some also need to be deleted. I have no idea how to go about this, is it even possible? It's always the same columns so it's not like it changes from file to file. I know it probably makes more sense to just create a macro but I thought I'd see what was involved in it anyway.

Each object has a property called Z (integer).There will come a point during run-time I will want to re-arrange such objects in my list depending on their Z property. The objects with lower Z go first in the list, and the ones with higher will go last.I have thought of a couple things, like making a new List, then loop through each object in the original list as many times as the amount of objects such list has (so if it has 10 objects, I would loop 100 times), and each iteration will check the Z values. When a cycle is done (for every 10 iterations), I will remove the object with the lowest Z number in cycle and add it to the new List. And so on until the 100 iterations are done.

I'm working on a little program that uses a ListView box. I'd like to know if you can arrange the list by dragging the items within the ListView box. Example: I'd like to be able to just drag the bottom item to the top, or the middle item to the bottom, and so on. I guess I'm just wondering if I can move items around using the mouse by dragging them around within the ListView box.

I'm using mscharts, but my question might not need to be chart related to be answered.My chart contains 5 XY data points that will be shown in a spline (line graph). The X values are from text boxes 1-5, my Y values are from textboxes 6-10. I'm adding them to my chart by code.

My issue is I have to enter the data in order to make my line proper. Is there a way to first arrange the points, then add them to the chart. Otherwise if I add a lesser point in the middle, it "z's" the line.
I am re-doing part of a GUI for my project, The Windows Alias Generator, and decided to switch to MDI. The child forms consists only of RichTextBox1. Here's the generate routine called when the save is clicked:

His child form contains several comboboxes which hold data from a dbase(sql)
When new data is entered in the cmb it checks the database and if it isn't in there it launches another window

then i can give in the details etc.
now, when this is done and the users presses a button "Add"
the information is written to sql(which works perfect)
than i have a public sub on the Frm_addOT which should refill the combobox and
also set the backcolor to a specific color.
and the last two things will not work. Actually when i try to change the backcolor on Frm_addot it triggers the event backcolorchanged and says it has changed but it is not visible.
Has anyone ever had or dealt with resizing issues on MDI Child forms? I am working on a VB.Net Windows applciation project I inherited from another devloper. When I took it over the forms had already been designed. There are one MDI Parent Form and two MDI Child Forms. When the application starts up the parent form and one child form open by default. Both the parent form and the child form will maximize, restore, and minimize. Although I have to move the parent form slightly, when it is not maximized I can resize it with the mouse pointer as expected. The child form will not resize and when I move the cursor to the border of the child form I do not even get the mouse pointer. Also, when both the parent and child form are maximized the vertical scrollbar on the child form is no longer displayed.
One potential problem is that there are lots of controls on the child form, which are inside several group boxes. When I comment out the controls, the blank form displays without the vertical scrollbar but will resize with the mouse pointer as expected. When I uncomment the controls the resizing does not work any more. The AutoSize propery on all of the controls is set to True. I tried commenting out the code setting the Autosize property to True on the group boxes only. The result of that is that the resizing still does not work and I lose the vertical scrollbar.I am trying to avoid having to redesign the form completely, however I am running out of alternatives. The project will not pass UAT if the resizing does not work.
I'm just getting started in VBE 2008 porting a VB6 program and have created the MDI Parent form. I've added a form called frmNav and need to designate this and all subsequent forms as MDI child forms. Is there somewhere in each form's properties where I designate this? View 12 RepliesI have some VB.Net WinForms I imported from VB2005 that are MDI Child forms. In the old project the clipboard shortcuts work (Ctrl-V, etc.) but in the VS2010 project they do not. the ShortCutsEnabled property is true.Any way to get these working again without adding special code to replicate the feature? I have a bunch of forms to convert....The parent does have KeyPreview but I can comment that out and the problem still exists. I also hook the TextChanged event for dirty logic but I can comment that out also to no avail.
