I want to make an administration system and I have a functionality that blocks the internet of a computer but everytime i look for a solution in the web it is either from another language or just a discussion about network protocols. Sep 24, 2010I'm trying to make an auto updater. It kind of works, but I've got some problems.I need to make the download threaded or something so you can use the program while downloading. I've tried the background worker and now the Application.DoEvents(), but I didn't get it to work.
The second problem is that the program crashes after having downloaded in a while. It may be because it isn't threaded, but I don't know.Anyways, here's my

Dec 18, 2009I'm just starting out with VB and have downloaded and installed VB Express 2008. I'm researching and trying to wrap my head around programming in VB before I start working on any projects. I have a little bit of experience with ASP Classic so some of the syntax looks familiar, but I can't get a handle on database integration. Let's say I am creating an address book. Each installation is a stand-alone (no network connectivity). How are databases used in this situation? Are they built using VB Express and packaged into the installer or can you create them separately (using either Access or MySQL) and then package them into the installer? What is needed to read and write to these databases? Are there extra bits of software that need to be packaged into the installer to allow access to the databases?
What if this application does connect to a centralized database (let's say a MySQL or Access database on a web server). Is the connectivity handled the same way? Sorry for so many questions, but I just can find the answers I'm looking for when searching. I'm not necessarily looking for the actual code to do this, just an explanation of how it's possible (or even a link to some examples/tutorials).

May 19, 2009I am working on a way to send commands to an Arduino board from a web site. The Arduino board is connected to the computer via a USB port (a COM port).
I have managed to connect and control the board using a VB.NET program. I also wrote a VB.NET class that can instantiate a COM connection and send and receive messages.
My next step is to basically create a program that will act as a proxy between my web server (IIS 7 running on Windows Vista) and the Arduino board. When a user gets to my ASP.NET page, the page will then send a command to the proxy to open the COM connection. When the connection is open and ready then I can send commands to the proxy. In turn, the proxy will send these commands to the board and listen for the responses it receives from the board. The proxy will then pass these messages back to the ASP.NET page.
The main issue I see occurring is that if a second user opens the web page and tries to open the COM port, there will be an error. Will this cause the first connection to fail? I guess I can first check if the port is already in use and give the second user a message. Are there any other potential challenges I am missing or not seeing?

Lets assume I plug device X into a usb port How do I find where the pc, or manufacturer has placed it? If it's a ddl then what is my fetch? if it's a virtual port where do I find the virtual irq and read/write port? What if it's a dongle, where do I find it's read registers? what if it's an external piano, where do I find it's sound out read regs etc.

Apr 6, 2010I am looking to write a VB.NET windows app or service to do simple HTTP port forwarding. This is normally done within my router, but I have more forwards to do than the router can support (10) so I would like to do it programatically.
Quite simply, an HTTP request would come in on a port where the application/service is running, and it would automatically forward the conversation to another IP address and port. That way, my router could forward a range of ports to one machine (where the application/service would be running) and the application/service would dole the requests out to the various IP/Port combinations it was listening for.
