What is the correct way to handle saving user control settings on form close. I have a tabcontrol that a user can add tabpages during runtime. I seem to be a little lost as most documentation seems to suggest that I can not save usercontrol settings in the app.config. I have played around with the solution expl. settings tab without much success. But, then again I may be going about it all wrong. So, I am looking for a little direction on the best way to handle this on form close.

And a class for the RichTextBox control. I dont know how to start this. I have made a class for the RTB because I figured I could override the sub new procedure but you can't so i just declared it as public and set what I needed it to do. But it doesn't work.

When I check the value of txtRoomCode when the form is loaded for a 2nd time it tells me it is blank, but there is a value in it. I think the fault is in the form_load, but I do not know why.
Is it possible in VB .NET to find out if a form is loaded? Also, is it possible to find out if a form is shown at the moment? I think for the second issue it's enough to get the value of the property of the form:
MyForm.Visible
However, I don't know how I could find out if a form is loaded or not.
Is it possible to run a function or to execute a button just after the form was loaded? I mean to execute it just as the form_load subroutine has ended, so the form is already being displayed.
View 2 RepliesI have coded in the older version of VB for years (VB6 and prior) and Recently I just began learning VB 2008. In my current project I made a mistake in a form name frmAuthors and so far I am unable to recover. The problem is that I tried to have the form inherit a class I had created (first mistake). The IDE generated a popup message stating the error and provided the option of changing from inheritance from system.windows.forms to the class I had created. I said yes just to see what would happen (I was bored so I was up for something new) and that's when the form got corrupted.Is there a way to let frmAuthors go back to recognizing itself as a form object and not a member of the object I had created?
View 2 RepliesI have a Parent form that loads a child form and I only want to allow one instance of the child form. I have this on the button to open the form. Stepping through the code with the debugger it "appears" to work OK when the form is open (I say appears because nothing changes) but when the form is closed it doesn't open as I would expect. What am I missing?

i frequently have troubles with the dock property. it seems that either the order of creation or adding to the parent control determines whether or not a control's dock property supersedes another's. e.g. a control with the dockstyle fill will overlap with another docked control on the same parent. does anyone know what the rules are to determine how docking will behave; particularly in dynamically created GUIs?

I need to do some UI updates when user starts interacting with any of these 3 controls. My attempted strategy was to catch the Enter event of the panel, which would fire when user clicks a label, or TreeView. This way, I can write only one (1) event handler instead of several. While it worked for the TreeView, it didn't work for the label. When I click the label, I don't get the Enter event on the panel. Whats different about the label control? I could handle the Click event of the label. At the same time, I wonder what the other solutions might be.
Ok I have a project which has a MDI parent. Inside the parent I have multiple isntances of a form load(frmLine1t5). When my program loads it will load a different form(frmSelect) and if I manually load a different form(frmRetests) I can put frmSelect on top of frmRetests and bring one another to the front if it's clicked on(without using the bringtofront method)However as soon as I load a single instance of frmLine1t5 I immediately can no longer bring ANY form loaded into the MDI parent(before or after frmLine1t5 has loaded) to the front. I can only bring them to print IF I use .bringtofront method

The first time I press any of the arrow keys the code is not executed and a NumericUpDown(NUD) on the form gets the focus. The rest of the times the arrow keys are pressed everything is fine, until I click on a button. Then the problem repeats, focus NUD, then fine.

I am trying to make a program that will include a drag/drop view where you can arrange objects around in a view and add/delete objects as needed (objects are actually controls I create dynamically), I have made some code which I include below.If I run this code it works but not the part when I click on a newly created control, then mousemove function is not used, I should be able to move controls using the mouse functions..but these do not work. I thought code like:

I'd like to verify if an image control has an image loaded . If it does , I want to unload that image (and load no image) , but if the image control has no image loaded , I want to load an image . Is it possible ?

Normally I can get the webbrowser control in my vb.net application to scroll using the following code after the webpage loads into the webbrowser control: WebBrowserPageView.Document.Window.ScrollTo(50, 50)
But when the webpage uses the dom to update the page after the page loads, the scroll bars will scroll for half a moment to 50,50 but then snap back to 0,0.
I'm working with the webbrowser control because I've had so many problems with using a non wrapped browser.
What I'm doing is filling out web forms, pressing submit, filling more information, etc etc. The problem is that when I press the submit but inside the code, the webbrowser doesn't actually reload the page so the second step of form filling can never happen.
From what I've read I think this is because it's simply loading from cache. Is there someway to stop this from happening such that when the submit button is pushed, and the server sends the new page, the webbrowser reloads it automatically?
I have a webbrowser control built into a windows form of my application and I was curious if there was a way that any links that are clicked on in the webbrowser control will be forced to open in a new browser window?
View 7 RepliesI am using .ocx in my project. I made some changes into .ocx. and compiled it. Afterthat I unregistered the old one and register the new .ocx. I changed reference from my project as well. This .ocx is related to display of new form so whenever i m trying to load new form it taking to much time. In .log file of my project i m getting error "control XXX was not a loaded control class"
It seems like its not finding the correct .ocx at the beginning. But afterthat it works fine but very slow.
I need some input refactoring an asp.net (c#) application that is basically a framework for creating dynamic forms (any forms). From a high level point of view, there is a table that has the forms, and then there is a table that has all the form fields, where it is one to many between the two. There is a validation table, where each field can have multiple types of validation, and it is a one to many from the form fields table to the validation table.
So the issue is that this application has been sold as the be-all-end-all customizable solution to all the clients. So, the idea is whatever form they want, we can build it jsut using DB configurations. The thing is, that is not always possible, because there is complex relationship between the fields, and complex relationship between the forms themselves. Also, there is only once codebase, and this is for multiple clients - all of whom host it on their own. There is very specific logic for each of the clients, and they are ALL in the same codebase, with no real separation. Sometimes it was too difficult to make it generic, so there are instances where it has hard coded logic (as in if formID = XXX then do _). You can also have nested forms, as in, one set of fields on its own within each form.
So usually, when one client requests a change, we make the change and deploy it to that client - but then another client requests a different change, and we make the change and deploy it for THAT client, but the change from the earlier client breaks it, and its a headache trying to debug, because EVERYTHING is dynamic. There is no way we can rollback the earlier change, because then the other client would be screwed.
Its not done in a real 3-tier architecture - its a web site with references to a DB class, and a class library. There is business logic in the web site itself, in the class library, and the database stored procs (Validation is done in the stored procs).
I think this is a bad model in general, because one of the things I heard one of the developers say is that anytime any client makes a change, we should deploy to everybody - but that is not realistic, if we have say 20 clients - there will need to be regression testing on EVERYTHING, since we don't know the impact...There are about 100 forms in total, and their is some similarity in them (not much). But I think the idea that a dynamic engine can solve ALL form requests was not realistic as well. Clients come up with the most weird requests. For example, they have this engine doing a regular data entry form AND a search form.
There is a lot of preserving state between pages, and it is all done using session variables, which is ok, except that it is not really tracked, and so sessions from the same user keep getting overwritten, and I think sessions should be got rid of.Should I really just rewrite the whole thing? This app is about 3 years old, and there has been lots of testing and things done, and serious business logic implemented, so I hate to get rid of all that (joel's advice). But its really a mess of a sphagetti code, and everything takes forever to do, and things break all the time because of minor changes.
I've been reading Martin Fowlers "Refactoring" and Michael Feathers "working effectively with legacy code" - and they are good, but I feel they were written for an application that was 'slightly' better architected, where it is still a 3-tiered architecture, and there is 'some' resemblance of logic..
